My G1s is 3 weeks shy of being 2 years old and it appears the GPU is on its way out. I've been having stuttering problems for the passed month as well as artifacting occurring while playing games. Last night I also experienced the dreaded black screen boot. So I called Asus today and got an RMA number to send it on in to be repaired. I've got a few questions I hope some of you guys who have gona through the RMA process can answer.

    1. The black screen boot is gone and my laptop is now working normally (but I don't know for how long), Are they going to contact me and tell me that there is no problem because I didn't send them a laptop that is stuck in "black screen boot mode"?

    2. What are my chances at getting a new G1Sn board?
(I am assuming that if I get the new board, all of my other components will be the same (CPU, Ram, etc.) with the exception of a new GPU.

    3. I know that the Asus website says a 5-6 day turnaround for repairs, but I was wondering if anyone here could give me their actual turnaround times so I can get a better idea what I'm looking at.

    4. I'm backing up all of my data, should I restore the drive before I send it out?

    5. On the "RMA COMPONENTS CHECKLIST" that I was emailed what am I supposed to put in the column that says "VERIFY". And how explicit should I be on the specifications column.

    6. Should I have them recover the OS or not?

I sent my G1S in for RMA. They do not have any replacement motherboards. The wait time for a new motherboard is 10 weeks.

You do not put anything in the verify box. You do not need to restore anything, but make sure you reformat since you don't want to have any cdkeys/serials visable. Let them recover the OS. This basically means that they will return it to factory default. It's good for testing when you get it back that way you don't waste time.

    hey scull20
i just got my g50 v back from RMA so i think i can answer some of ur question

I think the turnaround time is much less than 5 to 6 days
i send my laptop on wednesday 4 pm and i got it bak on monday 9 am i was surprised (it took them like 2 day to get it, process it, fix it and send it back)
(the issue wasent minor either they had to change couple of components
(cpuheat sink gpuheatsink and gpu fan)

You are not suppose to touch the verify column its for the technician

So I should send it to them with a blank drive?

And I seriously hope its quicker than that to get it fixed, 10 weeks is utterly ridiculous.

i called in due to my g1s overheating. they told me if it was anything involving a mobo replacement, it would be an 8-10 week turnaround. for anything else, probably 5-10 business days

    1. Asus will perform a series of diagnostic tests, so even if they don't see the black screen, they should be able to check for other issues if there are in fact any.

    2. You'll get the G1Sn mobo if there are any in stock. If not, you will get a G50Vt. I believe there is a certain amount of time you have to wait before Asus decides to give you the G50, though I'm not 100% positive.

    3. Typical times are 5-6 business days, but if the particular part is out of stock, then you can be looking in the weeks to months window waiting for parts being shipping from Taiwan. At this point, your only choice is to keep complaining and request a notebook replacement with similar specs... ie the G50Vt.

    4. No need to restore the drive. After backing up your hard drive, just erase all the sensitive data you feel are necessary to delete.

    5. On the "verify" column, just put down the problems with the issues you are having for each component. eg. got GPU, just write "overheating and stuttering during heavy GPU load".

    6. Doesn't matter. Asus will most likely put a fresh copy of the OS.

I sent an F3SV for RMA for the same GPU overheating issue. The card idled at 75-80C and peaked about 109C. It literally fried itself inside and out.

ASUS support is one of the worst I have ever seen. All they say is, "wait for the backorder!" like freaking parrots. Don't they realize that people may need their laptops for work?

The wait seems to be about 8-10 weeks. I will be out of the country when it's ready. When I come back, school starts in 3 weeks, giving me a very tight window to get my laptop back.

    ASUS sucks. Period.

    Never again.
