lol, might want to increase your budget a bit. decent i7 laptops go for around 1200$.

you should really do more research.

and btw I've never seen a core 2 duo with discrete graphics for 500 bucks. if one actually exists then it must be crap.

an 800-900$ budget would be more reasonable.

I agree but he did say outlet store but with 1gig of vram so it must not have been the G50 at the Best Buy outlet that I originally posted.

The best bet is to hit the web and stores right before 10/22. once Windows 7 is out official the older systems will be far and few between and prices may also then normalize. i7's will not be price cut for outlet etc so expect to see them run the premium costs.

So long as you don't mind outlet items you are hitting the market at the right time, now it is just a pick and choose for the next few weeks at least but if you find a good deal don't pass it up waiting for another........

I really don't get the point of going for something with decent specs and as a result, quality of the notebook takes a hit.

I would never recommend a refurbished laptop. Laptop deal with too many rigors to compromise build quality for faster parts. And refurbished laptops are a further compromise on top of that.

If you can afford $800 dollars on a core i7, you can afford $800 dollars on a core 2 duo.

You won't find a core i7 for 800 dollar because the processor alone is 400 dollars for the i720(the lowest one), add an OS, a chipset and the typically none integrated graphics which are pretty much standard i7 and you have something that already cost the manufacturer 600 dollars to make. That excluding a screen, a MB, ram, HD, casing and profit.

I think the best idea, is to buy a system used if you want the specs you want or hope you get lucky on ebay.

Additionally, you need to look if you really need a fast laptop or a something with good battery life. From what I have see, anything around the 600 dollar mark and is a core 2 duo uses a t6xxx processor or worse and thus has poorer batter life because of the 40% higher energy consumption of the processor. I recommend a p processor series unless you are getting a desktop replacement.
