    hey all,

had my Asus N61J for a little while now and about once a month it used to freeze and i would just install what ever window updates where ready and it would go away for awhile.

Now im getting sick of it and its happening once a day. I need to know if this is a common problem and there is a fix or should i just send it back to Asus.

    Regards

    Owen

also is there a way to tell what is causing the problem?

Is it locking up where you need to hold down the power button for 5+ seconds? Or is it restarting unexpectedly or powering off by itself?

Are your temperatures are OK, and it's not overheating and turning off?

If it's restarting, check your event viewer system log for errors and warnings. You can also set it to not automatically reboot upon system failure, so that you can see the BSOD.

If it's powering off by itself, make sure it's not overheating. You can use a tool like furmark to stress test and try to get it to overheat and reach the thermal tripping point.

If it's restarting by itself, it could be any number of hardware or software problems, that's a hard one to diagnose, especially with the level of detail in your post.

If it's locking up and making you hold the power button to force it off, it could likely be a software or driver related issue. Try getting the latest drivers from ASUSTeK Computer Inc.-Support-. There's also an excellent driver guide here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus-reviews-owners-lounges/494250-asus-n61jq-driver-thread.html

There's also a a hotfix for random lockups: A computer that is running Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows 7 stops responding randomly

You can also test your memory with memtest86+ through a few passes to see if your RAM could be the problem.

That's not bad, as long as it stays under 100C. It would power off automatically anyway if it was a heat problem.

It's probably a driver or windows issue, or it could be a hardware problem like bad RAM or a more severe problem on the motherboard (or another component) that would be harder to diagnose. Update your drivers, try memtest and the microsoft hotfix.

That sounds like it could be a graphics driver issue, you might want to try a different version of the driver.
