I think it's pretty safe to say that Asus has one of the most comprehensive notebook lineups available. I'm very interested in learning more about the W2.

Im quite happy about the weight and size of the W2 though. Its only 26-33mm thick and weighs only 3.2kg!

no number pad :( but the touch pad and quick launch buttons look SWEET!!!!! its supposed to take on all the other 17" DTR's so thats probably why its so big, why would they give it a lower number if the laptop is bigger? wouldn't that just confuse people?

Yep, well they didn't give me the clearance to show the pictures, but I figured the cebit pictures would come up sooner or later.

Now I can talk about it....... It doesn't look like just a bigger V6.... it's really just a bigger W1........ with with black anondised aluminum. It's going to be about the weight of the W1, which puts it as one of the lightest 17" notebooks out there, right around the size of the apple...... and not to mention the sexiest...

This time next month the W2 is supposed to be here. Price and final specs aren't nailed down, but I did hear they dropped the 256mb x700 to 128mb x700.. so I think that's pretty much a done deal.

    Thanks,
    Justin

The W2 is supposed to have the "color shine" screen... which is the glare-type (glossy) screen that Asus is using on the W5/W3 and the next generation M6/W1's

Does it have a glossy screen? The design is great in my opinion.

I hope it does have the glare type screen because from the pictures it doesnt look like it has much reflection. Justin, do you have any rough estimates for the prices and whether this notebook has an expresscard slot?

    Thanks.

I believe the express card is out..... I dont' think they will have those in their notebooks till the fall.

I beleive the entire W series will have glaretype screens... and like I said, I believe the W1's screen is getting upgraded..... as the screen that is currently on the W1 is going to start being mainly used in the Z71v and the Z81k.

As far as price..... a little birdie tells me between $2,500 and $3,000.... More than a W1, less than a Dell, HP, Apple 17"......... Nothing is close to hammered down, but I'd say probably... if it were about $2,800 it'd be one hell of a dell. If you look at it's specs and compare it to what the other guys have.... nothing besides the apple can compete is design and weight........and it's got the power of systems weight a couple pounds more. I think most of them are over $3,000 too and I'd say the W2 would easily sell if it happened to be more expensive.

    Thanks,
    Justin

A Dell 9300 here in Asia is actually really cheap. I got a quote for US$2500 for: 2.13Gz CPU, 2Gb RAM, 256mb GeForce 6800 GPU etc..

This are my best guesses at this point. The notebook is supposed to show up in April, and less is known about it than the W3 (mainly because the W3 had the other models come out in asia a europe first)...

We'll see... but the W2 is a monster.

    Hey Justin (ProPortable),

A couple quick questions for you, if you can answer them it's truly appreciated!

    1) What resoltuion will the W2 have? Will it be available with WSXGA and the glossy high contrast screen?

    2) Will the W2 officially have the X700 with at least 128MB?

    3) Do you have any exact dimensions and weight specs you can share?

    4) Will it be available in the U.S.

This machine may have just risen to my new #1 choice!

Any and all info is truly appreciated!
    Thanks again!
    Hayden

    Sure thing.

    1. WUXGA - color shine screen (glare-type) - glossy.

    2. 128mb x700 - I'm told thats final... we tried pushing for the 256mb but that was a no go.

    3. It's similiar to the W1....but about 3/4" wider and 3/4" longer... and under 1/2 a pound heavier. It's very small for what it's got.

    4. Yeah, give it a month or so.

So...will this unit come out as configurable in any way, e.g. add memory at purchase?

Also, I read somewhere that ut was comming with WUXGA. My current lappy is wuxga and, I must admit, is difficult to read at times... Ignorance questions: are things bigger on a 17" wuxga screen?

At 17" WUXGA, things will be about as big as a 15.4" with WSXGA...... but you'll have more desktop real estate.

The W2 will be set up just like the V6 and so on.. Later in the year it may come out as a barebone, just like some of the other systems will.... Again, like I've been saying.. if that happens it'll be a lower class machine, but for those of you wanting the most bang for your buck, the barebone models will be something that should interest you.

J.P. Prewitt: "You're God damn right he wasn't, but the two lookers who capped Kennedy from the Grassy Knoll sure as $hit were!"

I'll post on the record words.... but nothing that is official at this point.

    5 weeks out atleast

more than the W1.... probably a lot more.. I'm thinking about $2,800.

    17" color shine screen
    128mb ATI x700
    a little over 7.25 pounds I believe
the US model should have the tv tuner

Just about everything you could ask for.....

    Yeah, future proof notebook.. ok.

Anyone using express card yet on any laptop thats come out?

What I meant is it's going to be a worthy graphics system and something people have been asking asus for for a long time. When you look at other things in 17"..... between design and build..... features and price....... performance and size... nothing will be matching it in my opinion.

LG LW70 Express is lighter (just 100g anyway hehe),
    LG LW70 Express looks better,
LG LW70 Express have PCI Express slot,
LG LW70 Express have number pad,
etc ... much better option i think!

My 17'' dream machine is Samsung M40 (less than 3 Kg) with sonoma and Glare Type LCD with Samsung quality. Those laptops are the most beatiful in the world. You must see them (X30 and X50 also) for real.

I must say that the koreans are rocking the world with their IT technology, now Asus and other are doing lighter laptops too.

How can you say the Lw70 looks better than the W2? I'm surprised that there aren't notebooks lighter than it.... it's using a lot of aluminum and has a builtin subwoofer which do add weight.

But seriously... looks better? You might be the only person who will ever think that... Unless I'm looking up the wrong notebook.... someone want to post a side by side?

The next photos are cute but LG notebooks are very good looking in real, full of those blue leds like the ones that asus uses. W2 has the sam type of design of w1, wich i don't like, it's like a brick lol. Anyway tastes are personal buyou can't deny that the lg is superior in performance and extras. And Asus is pushing theprices over every brand. At least in here, Portugal

As I stated earlier, I really like the design of the W2. I'm currently using a Sony Vaio A170. There is one thing I like about the Sony, the USB, LAN, and power chord are on the backside. It seems the W2 has the USB ports on the right front side. This is where my external mouse is. Too bad the W2 is designed differently than the Sony in that respect.

Does anyone know if it is much harder to design laptops so that one doesn't have to deal with cables on the sides of the computer?

first off whats the expected battery life of the W2?

The Samsungs and LGs do have some of the sexiest looking laptops.
But we do not have those choices in USA so no point in arguing with the Europeans. We are happy with the Asus in the USA.[ :)]

Let me resume what i got from Proportable in this discussion:

You're a Architech finishing a Master Degree, who is the only one who can talk about design here, even about items you don't know and have a poorly designed website, one that is trying to sell Asus notebooks in this forum, but thinks computer science engineers with or without masters are kids, omg you're the best.

Blah blah.... Who's going to be the first to go... something who's been a member of this forum since two days after the founders of the site... and someone who has 560 some posts in the last two months... or "Miguel" the portegease poet with 25 posts... I think all from today?

    Thanks,
    Justin
