Doesn't say on Newegg for sure, but I think this one comes with a 9800m GS... not the best one, but pretty good. I dunno, for what else is out there, I think even some Asus laptops, there are better values than $1700 with a 9800m GS.

    looks like a good deal.
Is it for sure that the A1 and A2 have a GT not also a GS (or depends on reseller/region) ?

May be it's only the single HDD instead of dual HDD. And if I read it right the A version not have RAID so not that big to safe 150-200$

    Welcome to Notebookreview Tilo.

The G71g and the G50Vt both stock a 9800M GS which is effectively a downclocked 9800M GTS. As for RAID, I'm nigh on certain that all these new G series laptops are capable of RAID. I'm pretty sure that the X1 only has 1 HDD, but you can purchase a mounting bracket and attach another HDD yourself I think.

I thought it was a great deal    Why u said that?

    Isnt the :
Graphics Card NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GS
    Video Memory 512MB DDR3

much much more better than the :

Graphics Card NVIDIA GeForce 9650M GT
    Video Memory 1024MB

So... how good is the 9800M GS, with your comment now I dont know what to think :( :( :(

I was between this 2 laptops:
    the ASUS G50VT-A1 $1,599.99
    and the ASUS M70VN-X1 $1,499.99

the G was faster but I wanted a 17" screen with good resolution... I didnt know what to do until I found the:

ASUS G71G-X1 $1,699.99 I thought this was too good to be true.. the 9800M GS was clasified for extreme games or that's what I understood but now... with your comment I'm confuse !!!!

    Help me please!

The 9800M GS is a great card for the price, its an underclocked 9800m GTS as said previously. It produces about ~8000-9000 3DM06 points at 1280x1024 apparently, so go for the G50vt-A1 if you want gaming performance, I just ordered one myself!

It's not a bad price or bad looking laptop, don't get me wrong. There have been better deals like the Gateway FX laptops, but this Asus is probably of better quality. At $1700 though, you're getting close to the boutique laptop prices. Look at these two that are customizable and around the same price:

    Sager NP5793

    Sager NP8660

The Sager NP8660 has the 9800GTS and is cheaper than this unit right now. FWIW

Oh thanks! but... mmh, I checked that and if I put what the Asus had in the Sagers I end up paying more than 1800$ and the only better thing they'd bring will be the video card :( :( :( and dont know if it comes with camera or free mouse or that kind of stuff.

So if we forget about price.. lets say the:
ASUS G Series G71G-X1 and the ASUS G Series G50VT-A1 have the same price.

Which one would you say is better?

    The diferences I found were:

    X1:
    Display
    Screen Size 17.0"
    Wide Screen Support Yes
Display Type Wide UXGA (this is good, I want a really nice screen)
    Resolution 1920 x 1200

    Hard Drive
    HDD 320GB
    HD RPM 7200rpm

    Battery 8-cell lithium ion

Webcam Yes (It is 1.3 MP or 2.0? how do I know?)

they dont mention the Tech Intel Centrino 2 Processor Technology (so this means what? it doesnt have Centrino 2? that's good or bad? I'm new in all this :D )

    Ports
Audio Ports Yes (What the hek?! that's all? how come?) and you can see in the pictures there arent too many things in the sides

    A1:
    Display
    Screen Size 15.4"
    Wide Screen Support Yes
    Display Type Wide SXGA+
    Resolution 1680 x 1050

    Hard Drive
    HDD 500GB
    HD RPM 7200rpm
    HD Spec 2 x 250GB

    Battery 6-cell lithium ion

Webcam 2.0 Mega Pixel (I want a good camera, so this is nice)

they do mention the Tech Intel Centrino 2 Processor Technology

    Ports
Card Slot 1 x Express Card
    USB 4
    IEEE 1394 1
    Video Port 1 x VGA, 1 x HDMI
    Other port 1 x eSATA
    Audio Ports Yes

In the pictures from NEWEGG you can see some big differences.. but I'm not sure if its just they dont mention everything with details or if the X1 isnt just a very good laptop

    Help me again please!

I just picked up a G71G-X1 from NewEgg and, in conflict with the receipt and online literature, the machine claims to have a GeForce 9800M GT installed (as opposed to the GS). Display settings lists "Generic PnP Monitor on GeForce 9800M GT." Under Display Settings > Advance Settings, it lists the same.

Short of cracking the case open, I'm not sure how to verify. But perhaps I shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth.

9800m GT is a decent step above the GS. Open up your NVIDIA control panel and take a look to try and find out, or download gpu-z which should tell you, although I don't know if it will be for sure updated with the mobile video cards... but it's worth a shot.

If it is indeed a GT, that just turned into an awesome deal.

Its not a 9800M GT for the last time.

Its just the GS is still not recognized as it is very new, so all GPU detection software link it to a very close relative; the 9800M GT.

Btw, you cant see many ports as they are hidden beneath small doors. This makes the edges look much cleaner :)

Any reason you're not looking at the G71G-A1? It's only $100 more than the X1 but it comes with dual 250GB drives and 6GB of RAM. If you go with the ms live ebay cash-back you can even get it cheaper ($1599). All the rest of the specs are identical.

The A2 has blu-ray and 320GB drives (for a little over $200 more), not the A1. Those are the only differences between the A1 and A2 that I am aware of.

You can however at some places order the A1 and have them replace the drive with a Blu-ray.
