Has anyone heard of this new ASUS model? I found it on Integrated System Technologies. I'm looking for a second laptop with the new chipset and a widescreen for under $1,700.

    Would appreciate anyone's opinion. Thanks.

    Thanks so much.

Do you think it's worthwhile to wait until the new chipsets come out?

The machine will be used primarily for my consulting business. I have a very large accounting software package, MS Office and will use it to terminal serve into client networks.

I'm not much of a gamer (unfortunately, no time) but I do watch an occasional DVD and want great resolution.

    Thanks again!

It's the Z71a. It's a good little notebook, but the specs aren't going to impress you. Asus wants to say that it is replacing the M6, but in reality it replaces the Z9. It's a low cost system which means, low res screen, not as many options, a little on the heavy side, cheaper build (but still better than most other companies).

Right now, It's the ONLY Asus unit that will be out with the 915 chipset for atleast the next month and half. The new cpu's aren't even released to distributors from Intel and it doesn't support ddr2 or anything over ddr333... It has the integrated Alviso graphics, up to 128mb can go towards the graphics from the system ram. The problem with that is it's only 128mb when the system is maxed out at 2gb. When you have 1gb of system ram, you have 64mb going towards video. If you have 512mb, then you have 32mb for video. You can't change that, it's automatic. Even at 128mb, those integrated graphics are about as good as an ATI 9200, which a 64mb 9700 (like in the M6) would still blow that away. So, if you really want to get a good system for around 1700, an M6bne is going to give you a dedicated graphics card, and about 1/2 a pound less weight to lug around.

    Just a thought.

I'm not quite sure what to say. For what you want to do, you can get away with a low spec z9 or something. The only thing about the Z9 is it's not a widescreen. You don't have much need for the new technology and you want a cheaper computer.

The accounting software I use on the laptop is SQL server based,a RAM hog and has an intricate GUI that will not run on my Dell Latitude 500- 1.3 Pentium M/512 with integrated graphics.

I need at least a gig of RAM, dedicated video and 100G 5400 RPM HD and a widescreen. And I travel, so it needs to be portable (under 6.5#)

Does anyone make this machine? I am open, open, open to suggestions...

Thanks again. I appreciate your assistance. [ :)]

Yes, the M6bne...... that'd be perfect for you. It fits all of those needs.

    Justin-

I'm considering the ASUS MbBNE and ACER 8104. The ACER is a bit more expensive-do you think it's worth the extra $$$?

    Does ProPortable charge sales tax?

    Thanks.[8D]

The Acer 8100 series uses newer Sonoma platform I believe... but the extra performance isn't that noticeable ..
I say save the money and opt for the M6BNe

I'm a bit bias, but the M6 is a very nice machine. I've always preferred the M6ne, (15.1" sxga) over the M6bne (15.4" wxga), but that is personal preference. If you want to wait for the new platform, thats up to you. The 855 platform is certainly a proven platform and the notebook is great for a bunch of things.... plus you have many people here with M6's I'm sure.. and they can tell you everything good and bad... more good I'm sure.

We are in PA and can only charge sales tax to orders shipping within the state.
