    Hello,
I'm looking for a laptop that is portable enough to carry everyday in my backpack, yet has enough power to play games. The A8Js seems to fit the bill. My first question is, is this a good time to make the purchase, will the A8Js have a competitor in the near future in that field ?

The main thing I wanted to know, is what kind of battery life can I expect when playing games on the battery (i.e. no CPU throttling, intensive use of the GPU, and brightness all the way up ) ?

I have a long commute to work on the bus, which takes anywhere from 45 minutes to 1 hour and 10 minutes. Now you guys understand why I'm trying to make the most out of my commuting time. Currently I take my asus M5N on the bus and watch movies on DVD or surf the web with my Verizon EVDO connection. I also occasionally play some quake3, but that's all my intel 855gm can handle.

Would the A8Js be a good machine to use for gaming on the go, while running on battery ? I would expect at least one hour of battery while gaming. Is this unrealistic ?

What kind of "gaming" are you talking about? Gaming is never recommended while on battery and would probably drain the battery in no time.

If doing simple tasks... expect about 3 hours of battery life. If gaming... I'd say 1.5 hours depending on your settings.

I'm talking about playing HL2, battlefield 2, while running off the battery. All power saving features turned off of course because I want the game to run smoothly. I don't need much, an hour is good enough. But if the battery will only last 30 minutes in these conditions, then that's not sufficient for me.

Um ya less than an hour certainly.

Any computer with a gpu will get less than an hour battery life when gaming.

when you game youll have to find an ac outlet unless you choose an older 2d game.

I wonder if you lower down your settings and set a limit of the speed the video card runs. I am thinking of 'undervolting' my video card for longer battery time

I got about 50 mins to 1 hour when playing World of Warcraft on my V1JP. (if you want to stop before the battery is completely empty, it practically means 45-55 minutes) I did have to set maximum performance in power settings (Vista), because by default when on battery, all sort of power saving things are active, and the game was not playable with them. I did use wired internet - using wireless might further decrease that time.
