I just bought the A8Jp from newegg and have been quite satisfied except for one annoying problem... when I close the lid or hit Fn+F1 the computer goes into hibernation and then immediately restarts automatically!

I have checked in Power Options that hibernation is enabled and configured correctly, but still the problem persists.

I have not tested if the same action occurs when the computer simply sits idle.

Does anyone have any possible solutions?

    Thanks.

I had the same problem with my V1JP, and there is a fault with windows. They released a patch to download.
    Heres the official link:

    Hope this helps

Well the problem the poster described is not the same as the hibernation problem that patch solves.

Thats for computers with 2 gb, and its when the computer wont go into hibernation mode.

As far as the problem dlamar had he didnt describe it well enough.

The computer restarts meaning reboots? Or it goes into stand by mode?

That exact same thing happened to me after I disabled a few items in msconfig. If i remember correctly, it only happened when in AC power, but would be fine in battery power.

Since then, I kept wcourier, ablksr and dmedia checked in msconfig, been fine for weeks. These are Asus's own utilities, I guess they are somehow related to how the laptop should work.

On a side note, do you guys notice that if the computer goes into standby mode, after a preset time according to your time out setting, it would wake up and then hibernate? This worked when in battery power, but not in AC power--it would just wake up and stay on. I feel this is somehow related to this problem.

When I tell the computer to Hibernate it proceeds to hibernate... the black screen with the windows icon comes up and it processes for a moment and says "hibernating..." and then it seems to successfully complete this cycle, as the screen shuts off and it sounds as if all the computers mechanics shut down, but then it immediately restarts as if someone pressed the power button. The same occurs when the lid is shut. However when the computer just sits idle it only goes to standby and never hibernates (although I have it set to hibernate after 30min).

As for the msconfig settings, I have never touched them.

Any help you can offer would be most appreciated.

INTERESTING... I unplugged my computer and indeed the hibernation function worked correctly when on battery power. HOWEVER, I have never altered my msconfig settings, but I looked at them and all of the settings you mentioned are already checked (wcourier, ablksr, and dmedia).

    Any ideas?

I was double checking the msconfig startup items, but i could not replicate the same problem...i was wrong. Since my hibernation is working, it could be all the windows updates, have you done those?

Yeah, I've been doing all the Windows Automatic Updates if that's what you mean mt18.

I briefly looked at your thread latief (haven't really dived into it yet) and I tried Starting from battery power with a full battery charge, and it DID start as expected. Hopefully my problem is not as serious as yours was. I don't know if I want to go to the trouble of mailing this back to Asus for another one. Maybe I can live with it.

    Thanks for the info.
