I know the price of Duo Core chips dropped, and usually when that happens manufacturers up the specs in their machines instead of dropping the price. The next shipment of W3J's is coming with at T2500 and 1 stick of 1GB of RAM instead of 2x512MB.

Does anyone know if the A8Jm is getting an upgrade anytime soon?

I am planning on buying one, cuz I heard the screen was pretty good, and price/performance works out well for games, and for some CAD, but if its gonna be upgraded soon, i might as well wait.

    P.S. - I run Pro/E on a P3 667Mhz, 256MB, Radeon 7500 (memory overclocked from 230 to 320 no artifacts). In serious need of an upgrade!

LOL, yah definately need an upgrade, uhm, no word yet on the a8jm refresh, your absolutely right about the W3J refresh.

All i can suggest is wait another 1-2 weeks untill we hear something regarding an a8jm refresh or a rebate that may occur for it.

I am also hoping for something like, added bluetooth, and 1gb stick of ram @667mhz and no CPU upgrade.

    Thanks,

    MysticGolem

OMG, I am holding my hand praying that they will update it soon. God, i beg you, please made them do it, update it to T2500 with 2GB RAM or something
I am getting one in July so i cant wait for long, maybe at the 2nd week in July max.
Guys, if you know anything, please post it. Thanks.
Btw, ZoomZipFly has stop selling A8jm, I just checked it. Guess the only place left for it is Portable One, anyone know any other place sell A8jm. And where is Proprotable base at? US?
    Have a nice day

Penguin, it's been discussed many times. It's a printing error, and I can't for the life of me figure out why ASUS doesn't fix it. It's definitely a 7600.

ugh I was all set to pull the trigger on the A8JM and then I see this post.

How soon after the Intel price drops did they refresh the W3J?

Is there a huge diff in speed between the 1.83 core duo and the 2.0?

Word is that it's small difference. Is it noticeable? Maybe, maybe not. Is 1.83 still super fast? Yes.

well really i have the same problem, as i think everyone does, if only i wait a little longer, and then a little longer, you will get a better deal, laptop shopping is fun, and yet irritating at the same time....

yeah I got stuck in the "wait for the upgrade" game with my desktop because the following new technologies came out all around the same time:
    PCIExpress
    BTX cases
    Dual Core
And of course a new CPU socket.

I kept waiting and waiting and eventually had to replace every component in my desktop (aside from the sound card) because all the hardware standards changed. I wanted to do it all in one shot to keep myself open for future upgrades.

With a laptop you're locked in to the whole thing no matter what since major upgrades are not possible...I guess thats making me twice as anxious about spending too much too soon.

Can one of the vendors (ProPortable, G2P, Powernotebooks) comment on this? Any chance of us seeing a 2.0 ghz A8JM in the next month or two? How soon after the price drop did we see the refresh on the W3J?

You can get one today ... just order the PortableOne MX and bump the CPU to 2.0GHz for an extra $100. Heck, you can even get it with a 2.16GHz, for yet another Ben Franklin.

I think he meant the possiblity of A8Jm refresh with default 2.0 GHz coming out in the next while..... not the current one + upgrade

yes, I meant getting a 2.0 ghz in the default config without paying extra. Also it'd be nice to have one 1GB ram stick instead of two 512MBs. That way a 2GB setup won't require me to toss out both the old sticks.

Yeah, if there was an A8JM refresh with the 2.0GHz, 1x1024 ram, and bluetooth for the NA version - I would be on that in a second. Thats probably wishful thinking though...at least not anytime soon.

Ah. Yes, that would be nice, and given Intel's recent price drops, it wouldn't be surprising in the near future. Not enough to get me to wait, but if it were to happen before I order ...

As for the RAM, have you contacted the guys at Portable One? They might be willing to put a single 1GB in for you. Given that some laptops cost *more* with matched pairs than with singles (though some cost less), they might even do it for the same price. It's worth asking (and something I was considering asking them about, if I decide to go with the A8jm. I'm still waffling over the A8jm, the W3j or going down a notch in power to the W7j)

I'm in the same boat...I can't seem to decide between the w3J and the a8JM.
The magnesium top and half pound less weight on the w3J makes me want it (in addition to the better specs on the refresh).

Yep, those plus many seem to think the W3j does a better job with thermal managment, blasting all the heat out the side vent, instead of cooking your lap.

OTOH, the DVI out, the 800 vs. 768 vert. resolution, the cheaper extra batteries, and the NVIDIA GPU all make me want the A8jm.

    <sigh>

My a8jm is very cool and never gets hot on the bottom.

Thanks for the feedback. As I've mentioned elsewhere, heat is a subjective thing, which is why I was hoping for several opinions.

One quick question though: do you use the A8jm on your lap at all, or always on a desk or table?
