Couldn't find any answers in the other threads, so here goes:

Whenever I play a DVD on my A8Jm, it pauses alot-in some cases every 1s or less. By "pause" I mean playback stops, everything gets laggy and 10s later the movie'll go ahead 1 frame. This continues without stopping. Needless to say the movies are unwatchable.

Doesn't seem to matter what DVD I have, this is a pretty fresh WinXP install too. I tried playing on my desktop which uses a 10 year old (almost, around when PIII came out) Creative 5X DVD drive and it plays fine.

Uninstalled Splendid 'cause someone had some luck with that apparently (I don't use it anyways) but that didn't help. It's definitely not a speed issue because even plugged in at 1.83 GHz it still happens.

Any ideas? Thanks for any input.

A couple software to playback the DVDs can be tried such as PowerDVD, RealOnePlayer. Install different software to see how it works, might it help a bit.
    Cheers

I seem to remember reading something about this issue a couple of months ago. Someone's DVD playback was very jumpy/laggy, and at first that person thought that it was a problem with running on battery mode, but that turned out not to be the case because the problem was still there when on AC power mode. I believe that the solution was to use different DVD player software.

I spent some time watching a DVD with the Asus DVD player that came with my a8jm, but I haven't noticed any problems. The only time it would lag slightly is if I paused it and came back later and started playing it again-- it jumped for a second or two until the DVD player started spinning at full speed again. Of course, this is nothing compared to what you are experiencing.

I would just recommend trying different DVD software, and I'll keep my eyes open in case I come across something else that might help you.

Thanks for the responses everyone. I'll try using VLC but thus far the problem's been the same in both PowerDVD and Windows Media Player, with varying degrees of lag (ranging from the movie stopping to the entire program stopping). I don't think I'm having stability problems, and I have the latest nVidia drivers from the Asus site (or I did 2 weeks ago anyways)

Are LapTopVideo2Go drivers better in some way (other than being more up to date, but that could be worth it on its own)? Are they absolutely reliable? If so I may as well just give it a try.

I finally got to finishing the movie (Firewall) and I noticed that there WAS stuttering on my desktop, but it was substantially less pronounced, and came in the form of infrequent 1/2-second pauses. It could just be that the notebook's weaker at DVD playback, though that'd be odd because the DVD drive in my desktop IS really really old.
