I had heard from several people that A6JA runs not, especially at bottom. My model has 4200rpm so i though it would be ok. Last night i connected it with my 32" HDTV so i could watch a movie, played from DVDRW drive. At somepoint i got up to close laptop and i noticed that at the palmrest area (either left or right) was very hot too, that reall made me troubled. NHC said that HDD was running at 59 celcious and CPU at 65 celcious...

So please share with me your opinions, i am thinking of a notebook cooler, i don't want to get burned :D

DVD playback uses a fair bit of consistent CPU use, and depending on how you have (presumably) AsusDVD set up it will pre-read more or less of the DVD data onto the HDD. So both components are being used a lot during this process, and use equals voltage equals heat production; everybody gets excited about things being "hot" when they're almost always within normal operating ranges for the units - Asus checks this kind of thing before mass production.

Your temps are probably normal for the use they were getting - if you have lower temps during routine use etc then you're fine.

Yup my A6J is pretty hot too but I'm naively unworried.. just assume it's normal, and I do hope I'm right. If you're still unsettled then go ahead and get a cooler :)

You either have a fuji or hitachi in there. 60C sounds just right after a few hours of med- hi usage. Same for your cpu. Hot is an inacurate description. Luke warm at worst is how i would describe it. Nothing you can do about the palm rest other then changing the drive to a western digital which will reduce the temp maybee 5 degrees

my A6Ja also runs quite hot. after watching a dvd movie, i noticed that the table where the A6 was placed on was so hot that i can still feel the heat when i placed my hand under the table! my wooden table is about an inch thick and the heat went through under the table. i ran the A6 for another hour or so and it still worked fine. i think although the A6 runs hot, its still within its allowable operating temperature.

If you leave anything constantly warm on wood for a couple of hours, the heat will be conducted through it - 1 inch isn't that much depth. You can put something between the notebook and the wood if you are worried about the table's finish, but otherwise I agree with Eddie.

yes i start to believe that the problem is the used Samsung HDD...Produces too much hot, maybe Seagate or WD drives are cooler?

Also i noticed that after viewing movie from DVD drive, keyboard is hot too, especially at the top, near HDD/CPU/GPU...

my A6JA with 1.8Ghz CPU also runs very hot .. on SiSoft Sandra 2006lite CPU arithmetic it reached 72C degrees on BIOS 2.07

the included Hitachi 100GB 5400rpm also runs hot abot 56C degrees

I'm using the Asus NB Probe to check the temperature

normally i put something at back to raise the notebook a little by 0.8mm

here are the temperature figures on my last run of Sisoft Sandra CPU, Prime95 and SiSoft Sandra Harddisk burn-in runnning at the same time (about 13hrs non-stop):

    CPU T2400 1.8Ghz = reached 80C
    Hitach 5400 100GB harddisk = 65C (this is bad!!!!!)

    specs: Asus A6JA, T2400, 1.5GBmemory, 100GB 5400rpm Hitachi
climate: Philippines (current temp is around 30 to 31 degrees)

I think I have to use the aircon when using this laptop intensively.

Not at all. 80C is exactly where you should be while running benchmarks. 65C for hdd is a bit too hi though. However i doubt it will cause the drive to fail. Its very likely you will get the 3 years like hitachi warrants. Without stress tests these drives can hit 60C without burning. 65C on a hot summer day after 13 hours burning is not out of this world. Burn less, use more.....

i think the A6 series doesn't have enough ventillation holes for the harddisk, i can even reach 56C to 57C just browsing the internet and doing a network file transfer. asus only offers 2 years warranty.. it might be difficult to get the 3rd year warranty from hitachi i need to.. but i'll check the serial number..

for the cpu, for me 80C is a little bit too high, it might cause an early motherboard failure hehe.. a simple precaution will not hurt :)

So can many other laptops with the same drive. When have you seen drives with ventilation holes.? I think you worry too much. Just use your laptop. If you will run stress tests 24/7 sure it will break sooner then later. That is not condired normal use.

My 12" m5n has been running steadily @73C (thats idle) 86(full) can get close to 90C if i really try for 2 years now. Why should i or you believe the above statement? Your concerns are NOT warranted especially becuase 80C is your max load? I venture to say that 80C at max load is normal. Infact i will not venture i will decisively conclude that is the case. :)
