Been a while since i've posted... currently on a z96js... its working ok, but battery life is frustrating and Im looking at getting a new laptop. Sadly asus seems to have left its barebone market to whither and die in terms of build quality etc... so there doesnt seem to be much options on that end.

I was looking at potentially getting a t61p or something with a 8600GT M ~ Quatro FX 570M not much less... only a few options there g1s, mbp etc...

but ideally I would love to try and keep the 15.4" 1680x1050 with a 8800GT M. Basically a G1 but with a 8800GT M.... does anyone know if this possibly would be coming out sometime next year, early next year preferably. I would want to get it before april for sure. It seems asus is due for a new launch of notebooks... but anyone know the rough ETA on that?

Any other ideas / suggestions welcome :).

I wouldn't be surprised, considering that the G1s has had the 8600GT GDDR3 for quite a while, it should of been obselete already but its not. In addition, Dell recently announced their XPS 1530 with the 8600GT GDDR3, I don't think ASUS is one to keep quiet about it ;)

oh right u were the one from toronto... he went mac :( lol... been a while since ive been on nbf... why did asus decide to abandon their barebones? :( that was one of their competitive advantages... arg... anyway hopefully the new g1 comes out some time soon. I agree, it would make sense, considering how long the g1s has already been out, hopefully dell's offering may spur them to get their act together + launch their new series....

Any idea of IBM might come out with a t61p refresh as well considering penryn / 8800GT M... do you think they would even equip one with an 8800GT? Or would they stick to their general quatro FX versions / other rendering targeted cards? Sadly I would guess they would stay with the quatro... but any one think there might be some hope?

    Proportable/Justin, G2P, ISTNC / Other Distributors:
any ideas on ETA for any asus refresh? Or even if its a possibility?

my guess is that a new model might come out in Jan but not likely as it would've been announced by now. Then they might follow up with a refresh of that in the summer which is what they did this year, i believe. So going by the schedule of last year. One in Jan and another refresh in the summer. Don't hold me to this though, its purely speculation. For me, I'm saving up till the summer when I can get the slick-a$$ lambo from asus. I just hope the graphics card is an 8900(should be out by then) or SLI or something like that for total war empire which is gonna be the sickest game.

Not a chance that the T61p is getting the 8800GTX. It doesn't make any sense for them to do that, and the T61p is too thin to accommodate an effective cooling system for it anyways.

    At UBC right now :)

Someone told me that the 8800 is too hot/big for 15.4" and will probably only ever be seen in a 17" machine. Is this true?

It is currently available in a 15.4" alienware, but keep in mind it draws almost double the power, 22watts in the 8600GT vs 37watts in the 8800, Thats alot of power and heat to disapate and as anyone who owns a 8600GT will tell you theyre plenty hot as it is, so any 15.4" with the 8800 will have crap battery life, will be loud and have at least 2 fans, and will be quite large and bulky.

Exactly... It would be the Alienware mx15... Oh and the mx17 too!

I was thinking of waiting for those, but too many bad comments on Alienware reputation made think it twice and went for the G1S while Asus upgrade it's line of gaming laptops to the mighty 8800GT.

    Cheers!

i would... but i travel alot... :(... + am going 2 mexico all nxt year and then back to Canada... so... not = option for now... definitely crossed my mind tho... i think ill wait for 8800s / penryn to show up / see how the offerings change cuz as of now there is nothing that really fits my needs. Alienware = too bulky / low bat life, tho with 8800 thats not really going to be that much anyway... t61p is option = good bat life, decent gfx, but ... boxy / would rather stick to asus if they come out with a good ensemble... but will see... especially if they price it insanely high... time will tell... but yes a desktop / laptop would be sweet if I had the money / didnt travel so much...

Asus notebooks have really gone down from what they used to be a few years back, with the W3 and V6.

    You can say that again!

I purchased an Asus G1p about a year ago for $1850 and now just got a brand new G1s for $1499, better specs, better machine all around for less money. :)

I actually meant went down as in went down in design and quality, rather than price, though they have certainly done that as well.

    LOL... Gotcha!

Well, since I've only used the G1 which is considered the low-end model in design/quality (compared to the W and V series) I really can't tell.

    Cheers!

on the contrary, the G1S is actually one of the higher end model's. Its just that they need to make way for the B1 and the other new ones and they are clearing out the old stock. It's also a gamer's notebook so it doesn't look as sleek or as solidly built as the V series, but I assure you, it is one of the higher end laptops of Asus. Of course its nowhere near to the Asus Lambo but that is about 1000$$ more than the G1S.

Yeah, I know the G series are the high end of the Asus gaming series, but I was talking about built quality. And based on the fact that the G1 is built or based on an old A platform :)

Now that you mentioned it, is the Lambo considered a gaming laptop?

I consider it more flashy than the G series thus less appropriate for business use.

Well, its not as powerful as the G1s (Right, DD2 8600 GT in the lambo?)... And plus, its based off of the V1s chassis which is a business-oriented notebook (Or at least Asus sells it as such), right?

yes the Lambo is less powerful than G1S it has GDDR2 8600GT instead of the G1S' 8600Gt GDDR3. I also think it might be sorta based of the V1S chasis and that is business oriented. Only thing better about the lambo than the G1S is high price, leather, better build quality and a lot of cool amenities. Build quality for the G1S is decent.

Some how I have a good feeling that Asus will not come up with a notebook with anything above the 8700GT. I am almost certain. This is the part of Asus I hate the Asus R.O.G (republic of gamers) the guys in charge of the G1S and G2S have not released anything that has high end graphics for laptops everything is for desktops.

Hmm... I think the crt gaming laptops are pushing the limits of their thermal envelopes as it is (just check the amount of "OMG is my G1S going to melt?" threads that have been posted in the last month or so :) ). Is making an even hotter, even shorter-batt-life version useful? I don't know.

Personally, I still feel that the current drive in ASUS for very-fast-GPU, very hot, and low battery life notebooks is the wrong way to go. The business line gets neglected as a result. But it seems the market disagrees with me.

I think thats just because of inefficient cooling design. I have not seen another 15.4" 8600GT machine with such high temps....

You might be right. That makes me think of the vents in the chassis that are covered with tape...

Has anyone with the other GDDR3 laptops ever reported temps after intensive gaming tasks?
During normal surfing my G1s idles around high 30s and mid 40s. During gaming it goes upto 78 degrees (after gaming for 3 hours). After gaming, it comes down to ~66 in about 5 mins. I would think thats pretty normal for a laptop with these specs, right?

    That really isn't hot !
My G1S idles around 62°C while surfing, listening to music, ...
While gaming it can go up to 92°C !!

I did read about your problems on the other threads. Thats really unfortunate, is all I can say.
I have to add that my room is generally pretty cold, maybe thats the reason for the cooler temps. Am in a warmer room now and my cores are at 47, HDD at 48 and GPU at 70.

My C90S' DDR2 one idles between 68 and 88, depending on its mood. In gaming at 475/1300/500 it goes between 96-115, depending on its mood again. 78 is a pretty cool temp

My CPU never goes over 66C so I suspect this is a cause of my overheating GPU (fans keep quiet even under heavy gaming)
