I have been researching notebooks for a few weeks now and have finally settled on an Asus G1s. I am planning to order the notebook thru GenTech, but would like to clear a few things up before I proceed. Is it worth paying $238 extra for the upgrade to 4gb ram? Will there be a noticable increase in performance? Will I need to install the 64 bit version of Vista in order to make use of this upgrade? Thank you for the help!

do not pay for that, its a rip off.

get your own 2 sticks of 2GB DDR for around $180-200.

read the RAM Deals thread for the best deals on the net.

I would recommend you get 3GB total. Replace one of the 1GB sticks that cames standard with the G1s with a 2GB stick that you buy aftermarket like Gophn said.

Then you dont have to worry about Vista too. 32bits supports 3GB.

I would just get 3GB of RAM. I am told you can't utilise 4GB in vista (32-bit). I as in the same position as you and i eventually went for 3GB and i also ordered from GenTech. my G1S came on friday and I am very happy with my purchase

Going for 4GB is just right for a gaming machine. As a contrast to my notebook, which has 2Gb, the gaming experience still left me wanting for more . And yea, you got to have a 64bit OS to address the 4GB of RAM.

if you're going to game, you'll want to run vista 32 bit, and if you're going to run vista 32 bit, it will only support about 3gb of ram.

What about Dual Channel? To my understand, dual channel requires 2 laptops sticks of the size and speed. Or do the benefits of upgrading to 3GB outweigh the benefits of 2GB running dual channel?

I've seen the posting by GenTechPC showing better framerates in FEAR when upgrading to 3GB, but I'm suddenly wondering what the impact of sacrificing dual channel is.

Dual channel is less important then having 1GB more ram. 1GB more and dual channel is the best ofcourse.

Dual channel increases the ram performance by a few % but most of the time the Ram size is the limiting factor and not the ram speed.

Almost nil. In real life, dual-channel performance boost is almost zero, thus vastly smaller than the performance due to a 50% RAM increase (2GB -> 3GB) or 100% (2GB -> 4GB).

Understood, thanks for the clarification! I'm wondering though, what is the point of dual channel these days? I'm assuming it was more..beneficial(?) when RAM was pricier?

Regardless though, I think I will be going with 3GB when I get my system - the tests run by Ken of Gentech were very convincing :D

I want to upgrade my G1S to from 2GB rams to 4GB ram (For my 8600M GT, then he will be able to use all the 768MB shared memory ;) )
BUT, I have heard people saying that if you upgrade to 4GB ram your video card doesn't automatically uses all the 768MB shared memory.... (So he thinks there is still 2 gigs in it) and that you have to manually do it....
Can you guys PLEASE help me with this?

    Thanks :)

if you upgrade to 4gb ram in vista ultimate 64bits you will have automatically a 8600gt with 256ddr3 AND 1744mb (1,7gb) of shared memory...
