How come that having the same chipset, Dell laptops support up to 4GB of RAM and S96J only 2GB?? DO you think it will be possible to use two 2GB memory modules in S96J?

Unless there was a bios update or chipset firmware update then probably now and the 2gb modules would probably be very expenisve, i suppose it is possible though.

I'm sure there will be a bios update as soon as 2gb sticks of ram drop in price.

There's basicaly no difference between a Dell or an ASUS laptop, and the chipset is the same, also the current platform is capable of supporting 4gb aslong as the correct bios is used and if you can get 4gb of ram. (afford it)

While some dell notebooks support it it is a huge amount of money. The notebooks still only have 2 dimm slots. Dell has custom 2gb dimms. The upgrade at Dell from 1gb to 4gb is $1,800 - $3,000 (just the memory). Would you rather have a second S96j or 2gb of additional ram? :)

I would imagine that if you could buy a 2gb dimm somewhere that it would work in the notebook.

Well, I guess cheap 2gb dimm is just a question of time, so it is good to know that when the time comes we will be able to upgrade our S96's :)

You need a 64-bit operating system to take advantage of more than 3 GB. Moreover, you need a chipset which knows how to deal with it and BIOS properly set up for it.

It has to do with the memory mappings of the x86 architecture. In most x86 32-bit operating systems, anything < 2 GB is considered user space and > 2 GB but < 4 GB is considered kernel space. And anything from 3-4GB is usually used as communications and swap space for devices. This is why PCI-Express cards perform more slowly if you have RAM occupying that space, why 4 GB on systems not configured will show up as 3.5GB or even 3GB in Windows, and why if you look at PCI/AGP/PCI-E devices in Device Manager you can sometimes have really crazy-looking memory addresses.

I wonder if the latest BIOS has fixed this issue?

By the time 2gb sticks become affordable, the S96J will be obsolete :p
