I've read a few sites that mention ASUS showing off a .9 inch thick V6800V notebook at CeBit:

    http://laptops.engadget.com/entry/1234000440035339
    http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,119959,00.asp

Justin, is this thing for real or is it just Asus's marketing department or journalists doing sloppy rounding and unit conversions? Any confirmation on this?

    Listen,

No it's for real...... right now let me measure my v6 and let you know exactly what I've got.

ok.... I'd say it's .9" without the feet... thats how they are measured, but the feet have to lift it off a table so you can get air flowing under it...

Measuring from the table top to the top of the unit.

In the front, it'll measure 1.20"
In the back, it'll measure 1.25"

You're looking at a little over a 1/3" which makes up that airgap...

    Make more sense?

    Thanks,
    Justin

Ahh, I see. Yes, I only care about the thickness without the feet really... but the news clips say that "some versions will be as few as .9 inches", how many versions of the chassis have you seen or know of?

There is only one chassis... period....... what is measured when getting the "minimum" thickness is the thinnest part of the laptop, minus any feet or anything like that........ if the notebook came to a sharp point, the thickness would read... 0.0" - whatever the thickest part was...... whatever. The front, minus the feet is probably slightly less than .9"... so I'm not sure where that number comes from...... it's not an average.. but it might be measured from say... 1" away from the edge. because at the edge the lid slopes down, and the undercarriage slopes up.... so it's thin..... don't get me wrong... but the numbers i gave you are how i like to measure things because I think thats who most people look at it..... The thing can be paper thin, but if the feet are 6" long, then we might have a problem when people are ordering this thinking it's paper thin..

    Thanks,
    Justin

S5 - without the feet - .9" in the front, 1" in the back

It sits about 1.1" off a table..... it sits level... so the feet in the front are higher than the back.... so the front and back sit the same distance off a table.

    Thanks,
    Justin

Can you do the same measurements for the ultra-slim S5N?

The listed specs show the thickness profileof S5N is about: 17mm - 25mm (front-back) or in inches 0.67" - 0.98". The thinnest 12" notebook PC is the Toshiba R100 at 0.58" - 0.79" for your reference.

Are they measured without the feet or from the ground? Thanks

The M5/S5 both sit flush with each other. The back end is exactly the same thickness on the M5 and the S5..... the front is thinner on the S5 because it doesn't have the internal drive, but the palm rests basically sit at the same level..

Those numbers are off my own unit thats sitting here on my desk and my own ruler........ and I tried to measure it the way you wanted to see it..... I don't know if you want me to jump through hoops too [ :)] but it is what it is.

    Thanks,
    Justin

yeah, well for what you want it for... the off the table measurements are the best way to go... that's basically why I usually try to give both... hand height for typing is important. The more I look at it though, the S5 is a fraction off level.... putting the palmrest at a very very slight incline over the M5... not much though
