    Hey I just remarked something...

I looked everywhere for the XP drivers for everything (before formating and rebuilding).

Asus apparently removed them! Can't find anything anywhere! I know that some guys stated before that the drivers where on the support website...

Now I am kinda stuck. I have to work with a lot of fairly old softwares, and most of them refuse to run under Vista...(Mostly programming softwares and compilers for microcontrolers)

Does anybody have a link to the drivers...or maybe have them on their HD...

    *edit*
Since the VX2S is based off the V1... is it possible that some of the drivers are compatible?
    What about VX2 vs VX2S?

@Jorlin: Did you buy a new LCD-Display or did you your old one from your broken LG-Laptop? In case of first case, what´s the price?

@Kos-Mos: Have you tried ASUS FTP-Site? Sometimes you can finf more things there. I suppose that you can also use the drivers for the V1S since it seems to be the same laptop.

@Jurisprudence: I have the scandinavian version of AK002G, bought in Sweden, and I have a Samsung-display. It was just exchanged in Holland due to a broken row of pixels and unfortunately I didn´t check which display I had before. I assume it´s the same because I can´t really see any difference.

I first tried to take out the lcd panel from my broken one to test if it works fine. But unfortunately one of the screws is leaded and I was not able to unscrew it...
Since it still has warranty, I planed to buy one anyway. I got one for 205$. New and luckily no dead pixels or anything of complaint... (PM me if you need more information)

    Thank.

Do you have a link to the ftp server?
The laptop I am using while I try to find the drivers is an old ThinkPad
(P3).... can't even load the support website correctly.

@Kos-Mos: Yes, it´s ftp.asus.com.tw/pub/ASUS/nb/VX2S and you log in anonymous. But I just saw that the folder only contains Vista-drivers. There must be a reason why they have removed all the XP-drivers.

@Kos-Mos: Check under /pub/ASUS/nb/Drivers. There are some XP-Drivers for most of their gadgets. I also noticed an INF-Update for XP that seems to be some kind on Generic for all Notebooks.

    Hey everyone.

I want to purchase this laptop with the Bluray drive in the UK (as a desktop replacement) and I understand the Bluray drive is model VX2S-AK001G and HDDVD being VX2S-AK003G (these are for the carbon fibre version - black). Is this correct? I have found an online store with both of these models in-stock.

Would anyone recommend this laptop for everyday use with general gaming (World of Warcraft/Serious Sam 2/Half Life 2)?

I cannot tell you anything about the different models available. I got the "regular one" carbon fiber.
Regarding gaming: All of these games will run with the highest settings with the native resolution mostly fine. I do not know if HL2:Episode One or/and Two need adjustmets. Currently I only have the HL2 Demo available which runs great in 1440*900 on highest settings with anisotrophic filtering 4x and AA.

For everyday use: I use it all the time at home and at work. The only concern that I have is with the leather palm rest. It might wear off after some time... but I will see...

@Scott: I have the Carbon version AK002G without BlueRay. In Sweden the same model without BlueRay but yellow was called AK001G!!!

I tried Battlefield 2 but hasn´t got it running yet. I don¡t know if it the graphic-card or Windows Vista. I supect the last one but they say that it should run under Vista. I don´t know yet. But I´m thinking of installing XP on another partition.

    hi there:

I have a little problem with the web-cam on my VX2s, I can not get it to work with MSN live messenger, messenger crashes every time I start a video call or go into the webcam settings. I have the latest (messenger 8.51.)
strangely the webcam works with skype, but asus live frame is not working, webcam lights on but black screen.

anyone else with the same problem? any suggestions? under device manager it list my web cam as D-MAX, (STK-1135). I have the newest drivers from asus on this.

    thanks

I just contacted asuslaptop.co.uk and they said that they have the UK bluray versions in stock. Higher price than laptopsdirect though £1776 inc vat. (and I asked him 4 times to make sure it was bluray)

For reference heres the sold out link on laptopsdirect giving spec and model

    http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/Asus...ther_and_Carbon_Fibre_VX2S-AK002G/version.asp

I have found a good price for the AK002G in Denmark but nowhere does it say bluray drive or whether the dock is included. Anyone speak danish and would lke to mail these guys to ask?

Hi everyone. I purchased the Australian VX2S a couple of weeks ago and for our region it is the HD-DVD model. Device Manager tells me that the optical drive is a Toshiba TS-L802A and according to the manufacturer, this drive can only READ HD-DVD, not burn. I’m not sure if this is the same drive used in the European models, but if anyone is tossing up between HD-DVD and BluRay, this could certainly sway your decision. I was not happy when I found out!

@Jocke – I am also having issues with BF2. I have seen this game run on Vista so I think it is a graphics driver issue as I am still running the stock drivers. Will try the 162.18 drivers with modified INF from laptopvideo2go and let you know if it works.

GenTechPC has done some benchmarks on the vx2s. In addition to that the v1s system has the same components, so benchmarks from the v1s should reflect how the vx2 would preform in the same situation.

I've ordered vx2s-ak111g with T7700 & hd-dvd in italy. the support here told me that the hd-dvd drive is a reader for hd-dvd films, but can also burn 15GB dvd even DL (they are the same used for hd dvd movie) hope it's true!
    any news about xp's drivers??

@Jurisprudence: I have the scandinavian AK002G and there´s no HDDVD or Bluray. The model is the same in Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland.

@Yobbo: I´ve tried the 162.50 driver but nothing.

I have done a little more research and have found a lot of forums relating to the screen refresh rate. BF2 requires 60Hz to start and my screen only refreshes at 54Hz and it is locked at that rate! I have modified all of the video.con files and tried the widescreen fix with no joy. I've found the only way to play it at the moment is on an external monitor with a decent refresh rate.

Can someone with the Chi Mei screen please check their refresh rate - I'd be interested to find out how much better that screen is because I'm a little dissapointed with mine.

When I bought the VX2S, it had the Samsung Screen and the refresh rate was 54Hz. Since I did not like the quality of the screen and I knew the Chi Mei Screen from my previous laptop, I exchanged it. Now, my games show a refresh rate of 60Hz. I am not sure if it is a driver problem or if it really is related to the screen.
In my opinion, the Chi Mei Screen is much better.
I posted links to the specs here. The Chi Mei lcd panel is so much brighter... I cannot understand why Asus changed the lcd panel in their top design notebook class (the VX2 come all with the Chi Mei lcd panel)...

@Jurisprudence: Mine didn´t come with a dockingstation. As I understood it there was an Ultimate package which included dockingstation and BR-drive. I have seen it in Sweden though. The dockingstation I have only seen as an accessory, same as to the V1.

    No luck so far....

Mine got stuck at the border.... for over 2 weeks.

Should come in by next thuesday.....can't wait...

Also... I still am looking around for some way to have XP installed with all the gadgets working....

Missing BR drive, fingerprint scan, webcam, audio card and Bluetooth....Video drivers, chipset and most of the other thing have found some drivers....

As for BF2... ran it on a P4 1.4 with a 256M VRAM card..... worked at a refresh of 40Mhz.... so I doubth that is the real problem... try patching it to 1.41 and updating your VGA drivers.

    I did upgrade.

If you look into the PDF available there http://communities.intel.com/docs/DOC-1085, it states on page 7:

Default MEBx Password: Upon entering the MEBx for the first time, you will be required to enter the default password, which is “admin”.

I didn't investigate this problem yet, but I seem to be unable to change it to something else, therefore I can't access the configuration...

I use RivaTuner, as well as ATITool (the later being very good and easy out-of-the-box for burn-in sessions to found out stable frequencies)
I achieved a stable 580/470, and it doesn't get that hot. Sad that the memory is limiting the overclock potential...

Have a look at the thread http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=160237 (especially page 4).
It will give you an idea of what other people can achieve with similar cards.

Be careful to compare only with 8600M GT owners who have GDDR2 !!!

 DISCLAIMER: KIDS DON'T DO THAT AT HOME!
Not sure if I should post that bit on the thread coz I'll get flamed for this, but I also tried to obstruct the fan vent at times to help the machine go higher in temperatures and make sure that the OC was stable.
 DISCLAIMER: KIDS DON'T DO THAT AT HOME!

I don't remember the GPU going above 90 degrees C at this time... and with proper cooling, the max would generally be 83 degrees C.
This is while having a burn-in session, it seems that even hungry games don't push it that high in temps.
BTW, I'm still using the stock Asus drivers provided with the machine (from June I seem to remember) so it will probably fly a bit more with a newer set of drivers, but I believe I've reached the highest stable frequencies.

Guys, let us know your own OC results in case you be silly and try to overclock.
Remember: Fry your luxury laptop at your own risk... I don't condone this behaviour, ok? ;)

I currently use ATItool and got the orange box yesteday. I tried HalfLife2 for about 2hours on 580/480 - this worked fine. And about 40min of 580/500. I will try 600/500 and see if this runs fine since it does not give me artifacts with ATITool. I also use the native ASUS drivers since the 16x drivers do not allow overclocking.
If this runs fine for me I will probably think about flashing the VBIOS.
With 3DMark2006 I get a boost from 2989 to 3650 with 580/500 settings... which is definitely noticable also in game performance

BTW: When you are using the QuiteOffice settings with your VX2S energy managment, does your fan ever stop blowing?
Due to the ambient noise I hardly notice that/it does not bother me... but I just wonder...

Just a couple of quick questions: -

    1) Is the Blu ray drive capable of writing blu ray discs?
    2) Can the blu ray drive also write DVD+/-R and DVD-RW?
    3) Has anyone tried upgrading to 4GB? 32bit Vista will only see part of this.. just wondering how much of the 4GB address space is lost.

    Thanks for you help!!

    Another question:
The VX2S has Turbomemory installed. 1GB. This can be used for ReadyBoost and
ReadyDrive. I would like to know: If you deactivate ReadyBoos (e.g. because of favouring 2GB SD flashdrive for ReadyBoos), will the Ready Drive feature use 1gb instead of 512MB?

Reagarding the refresh rate and Samsung display. It´s usually the display driver that tells the system which refresh rates that are available. Maybe it´s possible to change the .inf file for the display and reinstall it. Or does anoyne have any other suggestion. It could also be that the display won´t run in 60 Hz which is quite possible since it´s not available. But hey, you won´t know if you don´t try.

I have tried modifying the INF before installing the display drivers (struggled to remember how to convert Hex to decimal lol) but still with no luck. I’ve heard that someone is running BF2 perfectly on a VX2s using Cedega so I’m sure it is just Vista locking the refresh rates and that other operating systems would be fine.

@Kos-Mos – Thanks for the suggestion, but I have patched and updated… it doesn’t matter what refresh rate you are running your display at, as soon as you start BF2 it will go looking for an 800x600@ 60Hz res and if your display is capable of it, it will start. This Samsung screen under Vista just isn’t capable of that setting – plug in an external monitor and it is fine – obviously a Vista flaw that will hopefully be fixed soon :(

@Yobbo: I will also try when I get the time. Since it is a PnP-display it could also be that it asks the display which refresh rates that are ok. Obviously only one which is a little strange.

I can also confirm that BF2 runs well under Vista when another display is connected. I ran it via HDMI on a 50" Pioneer Plasma. That was awesome.

I am planning to buy a vx2 soon. I have contacted asuslaptop regarding this issue. They told me the optical drive only reads blu-ray. It would be nice if one of the owners can confirm that. On the UK asus site on the overview page is says the vx2 ultimate should be able to burn blu-ray.

I ran the default 3dmark06 test...default new laptop with vista. Upgraded to 4GB Ram (3Gb/Logical)

    Scores 2582, 2567,2581

I think I am running slow, maybe I need to change something...?

Excellent! Has anybody else tried it?

Also: Have you tried burning a bog standard DVD+/-R? How's it seem for reliability?

Did your notebook come with a docking station as part of the package? nexus13 and asuslaptop are selling the docking station separately and the notebook costs around 1700 something? thanks

    Hi All,

I will be getting my vx2s tomorrow. I wanted to know if anyone upgraded the RAM from 2GB to 4GB. If yes, what are the compatible RAM(s) that I can use.

    Thanks fro your replies.

    :D Nice!

I asked Asus about pushing the display to 60Hz and the tech support guys said that it would be fine and would not hurt the display, nor void the warranty. They also said Vista doesn't have the capability to do it... yet.

Has anyone tried dual-booting with XP or Linux?

yes it came with the docking station, but the price I paid is about 100 pound more than it is now.

sorry, I haven't tried to burn any cds/dvds, the HDD is 200gb, I don't have that much data on my disc, I haven't even tried to play blu-ray movie on my laptop yet.

    Hello everyone,
I bought the notebook two weeks ago, I bought this notebook because of its fantasic design. Unfortunately, it seemed not playing games so well. I am playing LineageII which require a lot of memories and also a good VGA. Therefore, I asked for help from Asus's supporters to upgrade the RAM, and they said that VX2S can be upgraded up to 4gh of RAM but only 3gh can be accepted in Vista Ultimate. Thus, I am wondering would it be better by turning from Vista to Windows XP?. Sometimes, the 8600M GT driver stopped working, and I got the warning signs during playing games. Does anyone experience these issues? :). Sorry for my English (Vietnamese :p).

@VX2S: If you are using the most recent drivers from http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/ (16x), the difference between XP and Vista is only minor. If not, upgrade!
Keep in mind that almost every game out there does not come with specific support of laptop GPUs. This might be a problem.

As long as you do not want to carry a laptop of over 3kg, the game play performance offered by the VX2s is almost the best as it can get in a laptop (despite the Asus G1 probably). Have you run 3Dmark2006 (in order to see if you are up to par with the common score)?

IMHO, anything more than 2GB RAM for gaming makes not much of a difference at the moment.

Additional suggestions are to stop background services and applications to run.

Vista Ultimate isn't the issue the 32-bit version is what is unable to register above 3gb. If you can get a hold of a Vista anytime disc you can upgrade your OS from 32-bit to 64-bit (which will see all 4gb). ;)

You can find more information on how to upgrade in the thinkpad forum. Make sure to backup any data on your notebook that you don't want to loose!
