thought I already said that, regarding the BD not displaying : windvd reports "can't create overlay" (did not see it before because the osd was off).

    I'm using forceware 163.44

    I tried
    - unactivating desktop composition
    - removing aero
    - reducing resolution and colors

    nothing works

I had similar issues with all drivers using a modded INF...
Please try to re-install the drivers provided by Asus ( 101.38) and let us know if this fixes the problem.

    outch, that's a step back !!!

... and something's weird, as I remember that someone in that thread stated that he could read BDs using the latest driver (therefore using a modded inf)

    I'll test that anyway

Just tried : BD works with original drivers provided by asus. I'll see if I can find the difference in inf files, since I believe that the problem does not come from the driver itself.

(of course, if someone has a solution ...)

:) S/PDIF outputs on the laptop and PowerStation are optical :)
I confirm that the VX2S features optical S/PDIF and not coaxial - and so does the PowerStation: if you look inside the sockets labelled S/PDIF with an electric torch, you can see a led at the bottom...
I believe that we won't be able to see a light without the appropriate Toslink cable plugged in as the jacks are auto-sensing (I don't have a cable myself yet to confirm 100%...) This could maybe explain why we can't find any settings related to the S/PDIF output on in the Realtek HD Audio Manager... until the correct cable is plugged.
To understand my theory, open the Audio Manager then plug a microphone or headphones in: the status of the sockets displayed on the right will change to analog and disable the internal components.

This obviously confirms what djembe said... ;)

    Hope this helps!

regarding the jacks being auto-sensing, here's a funny thing I've discovered with my Z71v: I use Windows XP and Ubuntu Linux operating systems. In Ubuntu, the jack autodetects digital or analog and changes the signal accordingly without a problem (I tested this by pausing the music I had playing, unplugging the toslink cable to my speakers, plugging in headphones, and resuming the music), but in XP, the Realtek software seems to have 2 options: "no digital output" and "digital output only". I wonder if the plug would autodetect in XP if I shut down the Realtek program...

Woops, seems like the SP/dif is optical not electrical coax, sorry my bad for saying it was Coax.

As for the laptop, enjoying it so far. Found a couple of annoying flaws though. One is that the fan blows the hot air out to the right hand side. Now I don't know about you guys but I'm right handed (I think 90% of the population are), so when I use an external mouse I end up burning my hand, especially if I'm playing a game!! I found a low tech solution though and thats to stick a piece of folded cardboard or paper to the side that deflects the heat :D

Also the Geforce 8600m GT doesn't support portrait display modes AFAIK (rotate dispay feature). There's the option in the nVidia control panel but everytime I try to set it, it reverts back to landscape. Anyone have this problem?

Hi, I'm new here but I was wondering if any of you guys have the details of what is bundled in the box.

I wanted to confirm that it contains the same as this pic publised on Global Site
    http://www.asus.com/999/images/products/1782/package.jpg

Apparently it contains 3 cases, 1 hard, 1 soft and the sleeve cloth little bag.

    Thanks!

    Hello

here in france I got exactly the same stuff
    - leather bag (very nice indeed, still it lacks a third compartment)
    - hard case (pretty useless, it's like a jewelbox)
    - soft case (very useful to put the lappy in a luggage)
    - light sleeve (might be useful also)
    - leather mouse pad (awesome, the touch of class)
    - mouse bag

not forgetting the real accessoiries, especially the docking station !

indeed, the package is noting else but gorgeous

Hello, can you guys tell me is there any similar problems on VX2s like on V1s? I mean battery problem, Touchpad, Speakers. This laps seems to be a lot similar. And what about screen? Generally speaking, what are the cons of this lap? Thanks!

    Hello

    I have a V1S and a vx2s. Machines are similar but not identical :
    - v1s has a matte screen, xv2s is
    - touchpad are not identical

battery problem ? speakers problem ?

    imho :
    - any battery problem is a support / warranty problem
    - don't expect to get top-notch speakers on a BUSINESS notebook (V1S)
    - I never use speakers on any laptop, either spdif out or headphones

Photos of a screen won't be verry relevant. VX2S screen is glossy (at least on the model we have). The overall quality seems very good, image is sharp and colorful, and more "luminous" than the V1S matte screen (which is ok, but not overwhelming)

your link points to V1S product spec on asus website, not to "battery wear problem"

    Hi All

I've had my VX2S for just under a week now, and I've had nothing but random BSOD with STOP 124 so far! Is anybody else experiencing BSODs with this machine? The stop message says that there was a hardware problem - it doesn't quote a driver at all.

I've checked the RAM with Memtest and it shows no problems there.

I'm now at the stage where I've done a clean install of Vista Ultimate and only added the chipset and video drivers (from the Asus CD) and even this BSODs!

I've tried the nVidia 163.11 drivers from LaptopVideo2Go with the modded INF file, and this falls over too.

I've disabled the sound, as I've seen this as a problem area with Vista on other forums.

    Any ideas would be appreciated.

Yikes! Sounds like you have a major hardware issue there, now Vista does have a few bugs but it ain't 'that' bad! ;)

Try to contact ASUS and see about getting it RMA'ed.

    Hi Sunday Ironfoot

I've contacted Asus today and RMA'd it. They're picking it up tomorrow.

I see from your profile that you have the exact same spec as mine and have had it about 2 weeks. I take it your's has been rock solid so far? I've had my confidence in this model pretty rocked so far, and it would be reassuring to know that someone else has one that is stable.

IMPORTANT NEWS : RivaTuner reports me that the graphic RAM is DDR3.

I'll dl 3DMark and do some bench to check out.

That would be great, 512M of DDR3 would rock, hope it's no lying.

    me again.

looks like even if it's DDR3 I only get 3095 with stock settings and 163.44.

the memory seems to be clocked at 400, whereas the G1S ddr3 seems to be higher

    EDIT : that's prolly where the difference resides : G1S uses 513/700 settings stock, VX2S 475/400.

It needs some real overclocking, but I really don't get how rivatuner works

Just bought one (in fact about 5 hours ago)

I should receive it next week. Paid 2940CAD$ (about 2700US$ or 2040 EUR)

Not sure about the specs though (The description is quite vague, seems to be the big package since it comes with BD and Docking)

Model number states VX2S-B1B (never found the "real" specs)

So here was my first post on this forum!

:( Well, I don't think you guys will be happy to read that, but for the premium price we paid to get a VX2S, we've been sold a laptop with a neutered graphics card: :(

The VX2S, like the V1S, comes with a 8600M GT with 512MB of DDR2 (clocked at: core 475MHz / memory 400MHz). On the other hand, the G1S features a 8600M GT with 256MB of GDDR3 ( 475/700) like some other high-end laptops (latest Macbook Pro, ...) Did I just say high-end? How much did we pay for the VX2S again? Asus have been taking the piss big time on this one, especially when you know that we could have had a 8700M GT (625/800) in their top-of-the-line laptop...

Anyway, I welcome your comments (this will be one of my only rant against this machine, with maybe this bloody fan that never stops)

Overclocking the 8600M GT on VX2S:
I have managed to overclock my VX2S around 580/470 (stable, no artifacts) using RivaTuner or ATITool. It will probably work with nVidia nTune too.
I could probably push it a bit higher on the core, but the memory is at its max on my machine...
(Yeah great! But some people have managed to overclock their G1S close to the performances of a 8700M GT though...)

    Note 1:
I cannot confirm but it would appear that the 16x.xx Series drivers doesn't allow overclocking. I personally still use the original driver (101.38) distributed by Asus.

Note 2: When I'll have confirmed my stable overclocked frequencies, I'll try to re-flash the video BIOS with them... but for that I need a version of nvFlash that can read/write it - doesn't seem to work yet.
(It's a bit like: "If I have had mushrooms, I would have made a mushroom omelette, but I don't have any eggs" :))

about overclocking the GPU: on asus website (in italy) it's clear that g1s/g2s series have the 8600GT gddr3, while on lamborghini series it's not specified. maybe g1s (this kind of notebook born as a gaming notebook) has higher range of OCability because of better cooling system! but lamborghini has better features. I repeat, I don't think that an OC can give you that benefit that justify the risk (doing it in a notebook)! I had ferrari 3200. my default in 3dmark05 was 1350. I made ove 2100 with OC, but the increase in fps in gaming wasn't evident!

now, what do you think about the new model of vx2s?? VX2S-AK111G comes wit the new T7700! all other features are the same, but the HD-DVD instead of the Blu-ray. what do you think about this? step back or forward??

    Hi,

Oxyd, are you 100% sure it's DDR2, what is your source ? RivaTuner reports that it is DDR3 memory.

As for the specs, they were pretty available (at least you could easily know the GPU/RAM frequencies), so don't blame asus for this, maybe blame your own choice if you wanted a more powerful machine and didn't choose another one. One thing is true : on a supposedly top-of-le-line machine, one would expect the best of each component, so if the memory is actually DDR2, that's a bad choice from asus.

regarding the fan, in normal use it hardly blows for me (runiing oracle software + virtual machines etc, not only workpad and firefox ;-) ), of course if you're gaming all the time or running 3DMark ... but that's the same for every lappy with a decent GC.

as for the price, just try and buy a thinkpak / hp pro ceries with SAME spec, and then we'll speak again ;-) . Don't forget what you get for that price.

Conclusion, I'm still 100% happy, DDR3 or DDR2 (still I really need to know for sure). I was not looking for "the ultimate gaming machine", but a nice laptop, solid, powerful, with a docking station, a blu-ray. I got that and more.

    Asus rocks

    Hi,

great to have this thread here :)

I am currently thinking about getting this nice notebook.
The only concern that I have right now is that I wonder how well the leather padding for the palm rest is? I am a "heavy" notebook user and I wonder if the leather palm rest will wear of quickly... can anyone say something about that. I am already sure that the soft palm rest is most comfortable... but I do not want to end up with a ugly looking, color vanished palm rest after two month or so...
Any protection advice for that you would suggest?

Another question how is the screen? Does it loose a lot of brightness in the corners? What about light leakage on the bottom? And how is the angle dependent view?

    Thanks in advance...

Well... if RivaTuner says it's DDR3, it probably is, isn't it? ;)
Or could it be that the app doesn't show accurate information for this particular card? Please read this post (accurate at the time of writing):
I did write in my earlier post GDDR3, not DDR3. This was done intentionally and I've got nothing against the letter "G". I actually do lots of reading before posting in here and verify the accuracy of the information before I state things. BUT there's still lots of debating going on around the 8600M GT, so I can just say that I back this information up with the overclocking I've done: if the video memory was GDDR3, I could overclock beyond 470MHz and run 700MHz no problemo (like the stock memory speed of the G1S). The last thing I'll probably do, is to open my laptop and take a picture of the memory chips (for brand/specs) for all the folks around here who still have doubts...
I see... So tell me, if the specs were so obvious, why are still debating about "Is it DDR2? No it's DDR3! No it's GDDR3!!" ?
I did a lot of research and read lots of other threads that applies to laptop with similar architecture and parts (even from other brands). Even the Asus specs vary between countries according to their websites. By the way, if you know if the VX2S uses a MXM graphics card, please feel free to answer this post, I'm too chicken to open mine and check yet...
Mind you, the specs of the VX2S are "pretty available" it must be written somewhere on their website? ;)
Anyway, as the VX2S and the V1S have the same architecture and motherboard but just a different shell, I believe it's not MXM according to some info I read somewhere else... needs confirmation though.
If your fan hardly blows, it maybe means that my settings have something wrong (even in Quiet Office mode, the fan never stops for me).
(Hey! maybe I shouldn't run 64 instances of Wordpad and Firefox in parallel? :p)
Thanks for showing your devotion to the brand and the model. If someone needs reassurance in his purchase, I'll tell them to speak to you. But please, if I ever am critical again in one of my next posts, you don't have to take it too personally you know... ;)

    :) DISCLAIMER :)

    * I do not condone overclocking - Do it at your own risk and don't blame me.
    * Don't drive without insurance nor driving licence - if you do don't tell me.
    * Don't drink alcoholic beverages if you are under-age - if you do I don't care
    * I really like Asus as a brand.
    * I love my Asus VX2S.

Glad you like it! It was much needed when I created it as hardly any information was available back then on the VX2S. Still not much better yet on the whole Internet but we are all working at it :)
Good choice! If you still have any doubts, send a PM to Kador (careful you might buy 2 after!) ;)
The VX2S hasn't been on the market for long enough yet to tell. Though I do believe that the keyboard/palmrest module is the same as the VX2. Maybe you should ask to some VX2 owners and report back here? It appears so far that the quality is top notch, but then again this could probably be impacted by the pH of your sweat, or how "heavy user" you are...
You'll probably get subjective answers to that... I personally think it's gorgeous and high quality. No apparent leakage and good angle according to my eyes. Value for money, that's for sure. Please also refer to our friend's post ( Kador's) there: Re: ~VX2S Owners' Lounge~

I don't think the leather will wear that fast...

I mean Lamborgini still have their badge on that machine, and most of their "full size" products are fully loaded with leather...

    Just my opinion.
Anyways... Personnaly I bought this laptop instead of a G2S (which I could have for half the price of the VX2S) for 2 reasons...

1- Gorgeous look... I am a student, so sitting in the class with a Lamborgini laptop... is great for self-esteem...plus my "dream car" is the Murcielago... if I never have enought money to buy one, at least I will have an other Lambo...

2- Weight. I was looking at a 15.4" lappy instead of a 17" one because of that. I have to move around a lot, so having 9.5 pounds (G2S) on my shoulder, plus the 20 pounds of books is pretty heavy... at 5.4 or something... it's a lot better.

There is a 3rd reason, but it is of lesser importance. I wanted a good enought laptop not to have to change it next year. I plan to keep it at least 3-4 years. Since it is able to have Vista running smooth, I won't have any problems for that time... anyways in 5 years they will probably have an other OS ready.

They offer the A1B and A2B... There you should be able to see the difference.

I will most likely get the A1B since I do not need a HD/Blueray DVD drive and I have no need for the dockingstation either...

A1 is the standard (non-blueray, no docking) version.

A2 is the "ultimate" version... (BlueRay, Docking station, etc.)

I took the A2 version because I got a great deal on it... costed 2940$ CAD, so about 2700$ US (yeah that's hell of a deal!!)

The closest price I could get was for a A1 at 3100$ +tx (14.5% here)

Wow, that really is a deal :D

I ordered mine today and it should arrive on Thursday. I got the "regular" version. Since the only real difference is the docking station and the blue-ray. I absolutely have no need for a docking station (which is great if you have an office place). And though blue-ray might have been nice, I do not think it is worth the extra $400. Maybe I will upgrade when it is worth doing so...

The good thing for me is that I get the notebook here in the US. Since I am from Germany I greatly benefit from the current Euro<>Dollar exchange rate  (I get it about 350 euros cheaper than in Germany).

    *lookingforwardtothursday* ;)

    Oxyd,
can you please post your stable settings here once you fell quite confident about those? And which way of overclocking you have been using finally.
I prefer software based overclocking - in most cases only when running games...

    Thanks in advance!

    I have another question:

The sound chip seems to be run with realtek 1.6 drivers... can someone tell me if the drivers also include SRS?
