You could have used hibernation? :) But I agree that 5 minutes is a bit too long.

Hibernation is not the culprit. I disable it, and this occurs even after a restart!

any help would be approeciated as i would love to be on vista x64 instead of x86.

No, I mean that you could use hibernation instead of shutting down and then needing to fully boot up.

I use that, and I only reboot my laptop once a week or so. That would pretty much render the long boot issue inconsequential.

    Hi!

For some time now I have some heat issues with my VX2s. When I bought it and used RightMark CPU Clock Utility, the heat went up to about 70°C on full load a maximum clock speed. Now it is almost 85°C.
Yesterday I removed the "wheel cover" on the back of the fan which helped to improve the situation a lot. Now it climbs up to 75°C.
Anyway, it still becomes hotter than at the beginning. I cleaned the radiator and all that before.

So currently I wonder if the heat-conductive paste between the CPU/GPU and the cooler wore off...

Does anyone know how to apply new one? How can I safely remove the cooler from top of the CPU and the GPU to apply new heat-conductive paste?

    Did anyone do that before?

Thanks in advance for your input :)

Please PM me if you have a link or a good guide for that :)

BTW: Anybody with a VX2s dockingstation at home you are not using? I need one and I would buy it - PM me please!

We seem to have no disassembly guide for this model unfortunately. I did it for the M6, it's not difficult if you can get to the heatsink and remove it. There are usually 4 screws, if they are numbered respect their numbering when you unscrew and screw back.

People recommend Arctic Silver 5. That's what I used, and it didn't improve the temps too much actually. But yeah, it's highly praised, so you can use it.

On the Info Booth, together with many other disassembly guides. (it's not mine it's from ASUS)

None for the VX2 unfortunately, as I said. But maybe you can work with the existing manuals.

Well I believe that there exist programs that measure the time taken by applications upon booting up. I don't know for sure, nor do I know names, because I have not used such things. But they may help you determine what is wrong.

Hello lucky people, I got my VX2S ak087g (Yellow, with HD player, ultimate package) last week. Yesterday I got rid of the heavy Vista and installed XP. Works perfectly now.

I appreciate the XP driver pack of SASOVICS (page 43), I even use the good looking zune color theme and the original wallpaper :) Thanks a lot.
The SATA option in BIOS is now in compatible mode (XP cd does not recognize it in enhanced, as mentioned before).
Later I installed the related sata drivers, I didn`t check if I can switch back to enhanced now. Do you have any HDD test results that I can compare with. Both Vista and XP tests would be nice.

My stupid question is: What is the use of the small black plastic part (2cm x 3cm x 1cm), which was in the package, inside a small transparent plastic bag. It has 2 connection leads but I couldn`t find a place to fit it in physically (No nasty jokes plz :) ).

    Some remarks:
    - I bought it with a good bargain (I think). From cyberport.de, for 1600E. Stocks exhausted there, but you can find other inexpensive shops from idealo.de. I love Germany. It is around 2600E in the Netherlands, (where I live).
-I couldn`t find a battery charging setup which lets me to keep the battery at around %70 while the power cord is connected. This approach saves the battery life if you mostly use the laptop on grid power. Any help?
-In vista, mouse slowed down a lot when I established a bluethooth connection with my mobile phone. Also webcam crashed in MSN several times. I didn`t check with XP yet.
-I will post my experience with games (TDU,Dirt,Grid etc) and 3dmark06 results soon.

I don't know about that plastic part... isn't it a dummy for some port (e.g., Express Slot, but 1cm is a too high for that)

As to stopping the battery from charging at 70%, I don't think you are going to be able to do that, since that is controlled by the battery firmware (and possibly BIOS), not by the OS...

Some good news. Nvidia has released the latest drivers, 179.14

This one covers the 8600M GT driver that is used by the VX2S.

No need to patch the inf file (with the one from laptop2go).

Its a straight and dead simple installation.

(I am not allowed to post the link ) so goto nvidia.com/Download/Find.aspx?lang=en-us

    and get it there.

I downloaded it and it works perfectly with my system.

hey guys, recently im having a problem of cpu always running at max frequency/clock no matter how much work load its getting. when i press the switch on button, the fan sounds like an engine from the first sec, and the cpu temp is like 70+ even when im only browsing websites. i will get system shut-down when i open too many apps(not 3d games). What's wrong with it? I didnt change anything as i could recall, but the notebook used to work just fine. is it caused by bios setting? or power4gear or anything... i have reinstalled vista with recovery disk, and have updated the lastest driver and bios(301) but not having any luck, could anyone help? Thanks!

side note: power4gear didnt change anything...

    Hey Guys,

Just got rid off Vista, got XP now in it seems to work fast & furious. Now couple of questions, I downloaded a few drivers from ASUS websites for vx2s Xp, but some of 'em wont work, is there a sequence to running 'em?? I havent tried the drivers posted by a user here on page 43 but will soon. Secondly, I came across this VISTA Traformatioon pack i.e to make Xp look like Vista, Im just use to the look of Vista. Has anyone used this tranformation pack?? Reply would be appreciated.

    Cheers
    Faheem

I also suggest have a look at the processes list, and see if there is anything that takes a lot of CPU. If yes, try to isolate why. Make sure you computer is not infected with malware!

If not, then it's an ATK problem. Try removing Power4Gear and using the default Windows Laptop power profile instead. Try reinstalling the ATK drivers.

For the sequence, have a look at my XP guide.

    Hello guys!!

It's being like 2 months since I found this thread and tested out all the drivers that were posted here for my VX2S. I have a problem I am desperately trying to solve. I CANNOT RUN MY XP PRO on this VX2S laptop. Seriously I dunno where this problem hides and why doesn't it work.

I tried like 8 different drivers for the nvidia card that we have in VX2S it just kills me with an error "Could not find a compatible driver for your card" or something like that. I also tried modified ones from laptopvideo2go it just doesnt work.

I also have my slackware box and fedora, it just runs perfectly, but I need windows xp pro for my work. Vista kills me.

Does anyone have a solution or something, maybe I have to install chipset driver or something else before trying nvidia drivers. Your help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Just one quick question... did you replace the .inf files with the modded .inf from laptopvideo2go?

Hi David !! Thanks for your post.
Yes I tried the modded inf files from laptopvideo2go, specifically ones
181.22 and before, tried like 4 different ones with modified inf as well.

I also tried different software that automatically assign and install drivers,
it does install nvidia drivers, but vx2s doesn't want to use it :(((((

I dunno it seem that it never be working, I wish I would have never bought this crappy laptop. Asus vx2s, I hate it so much, Now I am obliged to use Linux and Crappy Vista forever I guess.

Could anyone plz help me with tht.

    Thanks

    Modify bios for memory remap?

I use Vista X64 and would like to use all of my 4 gb of RAM...

Does anyone know how to modify bios to add this feature?
Perhaps by using modules from the G1S which have remap feature in bios.

Why won´t asus put this into bios!!!!??

My question was addressed to m1kz. Reason being that sometimes Windows XP with 3GB+ of RAM causes the GPU to not be detected, and the drivers are impossible to install. See for instance my W7Sg XP installation guide for details (linked e.g., from the Info Booth).

    Hi David !!
Yes I do have a 4GB RAM indeed.

Should I detach 2 GB of my RAM to use XP?
Or how do we fix it ?

Even VISTA doesn't detect my 3+GB
    Here is the print-screen.

How do we fix this memory issue ?
    Anyone knows ?

Any specific priority list for intstalling the whole drivers pack ?

First, check Add/Remove programs to see if windows update installed any nvidia drivers for you. if so, uninstall them. If not, then read on.
Second, download driversweeper from guru3d.com and analyze "nvidia" and "physx," then clean the two.
third, make sure you have the latest service packs installed for XP.
finally, download a driver from the nvidia site and attempt to install.

    Hi,

I am proud, happy owner of VX2S. Has been almost 2 years with this laptop and still today kick some a** to a lot of laptops.

First of all before my original question. I would like to share my experience with this laptop.
I always used Vista until recently without any problem. Never had any issue with my laptop regarding GPU or LCD screen (still dont know if my LCD is the better one, but i am happy with it). I upgraded the HDD to a Western Digital Scorpio Blue 500GB and 2X2GB Kingston RAM. The laptop runs very well but i must say that with the original HDD was a bit faster since its a 7200RPM HDD, still nothing major and i needed the extra space.

I was needing to clean install windows and was about to install XP, since in the thread people were saying that makes the laptop much faster. But a last minute i decide to install Windows 7 RC and i cant believe how well this laptop runs 7, way better then Vista. If any one is looking for drivers for 7, this is what i did:
Windows 7 will find most of the drivers thru win update. One i was really impressive was the Biometric driver. Then I installed RadarSync free version and update all the drivers. The only ones i had to manual install was the webcam, I just installed the Vista driver. The graphic card driver I always use Dox Optimize drivers I love them, using 185.85 for windows 7, vista is also supported, I highly recommend. http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showforum=122 .
Im very happy VX2S user. Only complain is right ventilation exit, it burns my hand while playing games. and the CTRL / FN buttons been switched. Now im kinda used to it.

Going to my original question I would like to upgrade my CPU, mine came with Intel T7500 and i find it already slow for what i need. I am thinking to upgrade my CPU. I think that T7800 will work just fine, since is same series T7XXX that laptop comes with. But i really wanna push it to max so im considering T9500 or even T9900, but im afraid last one wont work since bus is 1066Mhz. So my best bet is T9500 cpu with 800Mhz FSB. I would like your thoughts about the subject, and to know if anyone have done CPU upgrade.

Also would like to know if Intel Core 2 Duo Extreme X7900 and X9000 are compatible, both are also 800Mhz FSB.

    Regards,

The X7900 and X9000 are both running at 800MHz (FSB), and both they should technically work with the 965 chipset on the VX2S. My only concern is that your power supply may not be providing enough power to run the extreme CPUs. If you have a 90W power adapter, it may be cutting a little close. If you have a 120W adapter, then it should be fine.

The T9900 and the likes will not work on your VX2S. You will need a GM4 or PM45 chipset in order for it to work.

Anyone here, who recently got a Sony Vaio Z (1600*900 display res) by any chance.

I am thinking about changing from the VX2s to the Vaio Z especially because of weight and size.

If anyone made the transition, I would like to know... ;)

    Hi,

I finally made the CPU upgrade. My upgrade was to an Intel Core2Duo T9500 running at 2.6 MHz , FSB 800MHz. I must say the laptop now is much faster. My Windows index for the Processor jumped from 5.5 to 6.1 :) .

The procedure was easier than i thought. I could also find the nvidia GPU and I had to remove it to access the CPU. Can we change this graphic card to another one, since is a removable module?
I planning to do a tutorial how to disassembly the VX2S and post some pictures or even a video.
I would like to thank everyone for the help....

I'd also like to see some pics of this beast getting opened.

I want to check the thermal paste on the CPU and GPU. And perhaps change it to the Zalman stuff I have left over from my CNPS 9700.

Don't want to pry open something wrong yet. :p

Also, I've noticed that the right edge of the screen is alot darker than the rest of the display. Quite annoying at times.

Generally upgrading the GPU on an (ASUS) laptop is not possible. See InfoBoothFAQ.

Maybe there is a problem with the backlight. If you're still under warranty, you could RMA the notebook to get the problem solved.

I don't think we have a disassembly manual for the VX models...

I think it still has warranty, but the sticker with all the numbers has basically worn clean.

    That may be a problem?

I don't think that'll be a problem. You can just include the purchase receipt. I think the serial number is also on the battery (if you still have the original battery), on the box, on the warranty flier and possibly in other places. Any of those can be used to prove that you have warranty coverage.

    Oh, ok. I'll check that.

Thanks for the quick reply though. :p

[EDIT] Yes, I think I found it on the battery.

Would really like to see your pics or notes on how to get at the cpu/gpu. My vx2s runs so hot I was considering trying a top end thermal compound like ICD 7 on the cpu and gpu to see if that would help.

    Thanks

Did you clean the fan and heat radiator lately? If not then that's probably at least one of the causes of the notebook overheating.

Yep, took off the bottom cpu cover and blew out any and all dust with compressed air can. Besides my unit is a refurb and only have had it ~4or 5 months So it should have been pretty clean hen it arrived.

Hi. I bought the VX2S 2 years ago. But ever since then I found that its startup and shutdown is very slow. Its also loaded up with all the ASUS software - like Splendid, TPM, Intel Active Management, Asus protection, etc.. I'm thinking of reformating the computer, reinstalling Vista but not including the other stuff to help improve speed. Comments?

    Comments:
    - see the Info BoothFAQ for a procedure for clean install
    - see the ASUS Bloatware guide and the Vista Cleanup Guide in the Info Booth for: how to optimize your vista installation, and which ASUS utils you need and don't need

Blowing compressed air doesn't help much in some (many?) cases. If possible, you need to manually cleanup the dust from between the fan and the radiator.
