Hello to all Asus VX2S enthusiasts
Well, sorry I don't own it yet but I've been looking for any info about this model for almost 5 months (since I saw the VX2 in Hong Kong).
I suggest that all VX2S owners and people with real interest in this model write down here their findings, appreciation, problems, and post pictures, links, reviews, ...
So far, I can only come up with this specifications page (similar page for all their markets as far as I know: Asia, Americas, ...)
Asus UK info page for the VX2S:
http://uk.asus.com/products4.aspx?modelmenu=2&model=1782&l1=5&l2=25&l3=309&l4=0
I personally want to know before purchasing this notebook in the UK:
- Is the built-in 200GB hard-drive either 5400RPM or 7200RPM? What brand and model?
- It apparently comes with a Blu-Ray drive, is there any mention on the packaging of a "Ultimate package" as marketed by Asus?
- Still about this so called "Ultimate package", does the Yellow and Black models sold in the UK come with the docking station (also known as "Power Station")?
- Does the box contain a second battery for the DVD bay as the VX2 used to have in the Asia (Taiwan, Hong Kong)?
- Any difference in the supplied accessories between the VX2S-AK001G and VX2S-AK002G?
Thanks to anybody who can make this thread alive, and especially answer these questions.
Bye for now

Hello
I ordered a vx2s with AK027G reference, it's supposed to be the reference of the "ultimate package" for France.
If I don't forget, i'll answer to your questions, but I can't be 100% sure that the packages for france and UK are identical. Maybe you should contact asus UK ? -
does anyone on this forum have an VX2s? I know due to its price not that many people will buy it, but no one has one at all??
the delivery date for my vx2s has been changed to Saturday.
JC -
How much did you pay for the Ultimate Package in France?
Merci,
Oxyd -
aaarrrrrhhhgg..... I've just received a confirmation email from the reseller to confirm delivery date, but they got the wrong model number on the order!!! on the email it listed the previous none santa rosa VX2 model.
I really wish Asus UK and the reseller can pull their fingers out and get their act together!
it's the first time I bought an Asus laptop and the experience has not been a pleasant one so far.... and that's before I got my laptop
moan over for now....

Good luck -
I ordered my VX2s after the specs has been confirmed in the 'ultimate package'
blueray+docking station etc... so I know exactly what I've ordered.
I sincerely hope it was just a smiple typo, otherwise I will be asking for a full refund, I will not mention the resellers name for now, so they have a last chance to get it right. I will phone them first thing tomorrow to ask what they are playing at. and I will let you know how I got on later...

VX2S-AK007G and VX2S-AK008G
VX2S-AK025G and VX2S-AK027G at a higher price, so supposedly being that "ultimate package"
I believe that the contents and specs of packages differ amongst countries, so don't take anything for granted.
The price for the VX2S-AK027G was 2510 euro vat included (that's a good price, less expensive than the normal package in other stores !). www.1000ordi.fr (m not affiliated or whatever) -

Hello guys
I've just ordered this notebook (black version). Looking forward to test it out with games and hd movies! -
I finally saw the VX1 today, wow was it a work of art. It felt so solid, and the carbon fibre weave was so sleek. The little things, like the leather threads, chrome outlines and the brushed aluminum bits made it a stunning piece of work.

VX2S-AK007G and VX2S-AK008G are obsolete references
VX2S-AK025G and VX2S-AK027G seemingly include
- blu ray
- 7200 rpm drive
- docking station
seems like it's an ultimate thingie I'll get
can't wait -
Oops, Yea I meant the Black VX2 heh.
-
I sold out and got a MPB. Please post high res pics of your new VX2s so we can all drool over the fine details.

Just got my vx2s delivered this morning, first impression: it rocks !
build quility is top notch, screen is beautiful, no dead pixs.
it's the black uk version, with blu-ray and docking station.
to answer some of your quesitons
1. HDD: is the hitachi Hts722020k9sa00, 7200 rpm 200gb.
2.box just says vx2s, no mention of ultimate package on the box
3. no second battery, but if you are going to Hongknog again, iam sure u can pick one up there cheaper than uk price.
i will try to find out if the geforce 8600m is ddr3 or not, after I uninstalled norton, it's so annoy, it even blocks ms's site for downloading vista gadgets
JC -
Glad to see they put the 72krpm 200gb drive. Looking forward to your posts.

3d06 with stock drivers: 2996
3d06 with 163.11 driver: 3066
this does not affect me too much as I am no hard core gammer, all I want to play on my computer is DOW and coh, and sc2 next year.
Vista ultimate took up around 22 gb of HDD space out of box! after installing updates, office and adobe acrobat I am down to 19gb free on a 50gb partition!
haven't tried the blu-ray drive yet, as I need to get a Hdmi cable and a blu-ray movie from somewhere no idea if it is light-scribe or not as I don't have any light-scribe discs to test, the drive comes with 2 opitical lens one for blu-ray discs and one for regular dvd/cd.
temperture is ok, get slightly warm in the right palm-rest area after few hours of general use.
any questions just let me know.

Please would it be possible for you to publish screenshots of the relevant tabs from CPU-Z so we can know a bit more about the internals.
And if you could tell us how many RAM slots are being used to populate the 2GB, that would be fab!
Cheers mate,

keyboard is very good, very little flex and easy to type on, the touchpad looks like one big touchpad, but there are left and right buttons you can press and they do make a click noise, they are quite stiff and needs some getting used to.
I really love this laptop,no regrets about getting it, for me this is a very good combination of design, components and build quality, I highly recommend it,

which tabs on cpu-z were you interest in? -
How do you like the leather palm rests? Think with ocassional cleaning/conditioning it would stay like new through average use?
-
I have taken some photos.... not that good, but best I can do in 5 minutes.

OMG the same logitec mouse for the Lamborghini i know it's very good quality but why not they release new one.
-
I'd be guessing as they are not bluetooth like the one in the picture is. -
the bluetooth mouth is pretty nice, and working well, no complains there.
Thanks very much for the rep point.

well, if you could.. I need a litle favor. Since the v2xs is "equal" to the G1s could you make a simple test ??
Please post the ac-adapter specs e.g. Volts and Amp.
If you use power4gear choose the high performance for battery and ac-adapter and :
Make a superpi 1M with full battery and ac-adapter pluged in;
Make a superpi 1M with full battery;
Make a superpi 1M with battery at 60% with ac-adapter charging the battery
http://www.xtremesystems.com/pi/super_pi_mod-1.5.zip
and post your seconds.
thank you -
power brick: 19v, 4.74A output. but I am a little confused, never heard one can measure how powerful a computer is by the adapter. i think this is just a generic adapter asus uses, I bet v1s and v2s and g1s uses the same adapter.
now superpi: 1m pluged in: 24.09s battery:24.54s, charging: 24.69s
Ie. could not see much of a difference. I believe G1s gets around 23s right?

Ib14132302, can I ask which supplier you ordered your kit from?
There is some ambiguity about the exact spec of the black VX2S with UK retailers.
I want to be sure I'm getting the BluRay and the docking station. -
the day after my Vx2s was delivered, the price dropped by 40 pounds. I guess thats the price for been the 1st in the technology queue.
JC -
Very nice pics! Thanks. Glad to see this unit has alot of ports/connectivity options. At work I use a vx revolution. I would not go back to any other mouse, the hyper scroll wheel really helps. At home its a G7 wireless laser, when I use my laptop at home its plugged into a usb hub and external lcd.

Have ordered VX2S Ultimate - Black - Model No. VX2S-AK040G in Sydney.
Was to be available on Aug 11 for collection Aug 13 and now advised will not be available until Aug 22 for collection following day.
Was interested in earlier post where it was stated that the HDD was 7200 rpm as many retailer sites are confusing with some stating 4200 rpm, 5400 rpm, 7200 rpm and "7200 rpm capable".
Will have to wait and see what we get. -
Hi,
My first post
I want to get this laptop but have a couple of questions...
1. Can this play BluRay movies from the laptop screen itself (ie. does it support HDCP). Also can I hook this upto an HDTV and watch BluRay movies on that (via the HDMI port)?
2. What software does it come with for watching BluRay movies?
3. Can this laptop drive two external displays at the same time, via both VGA and HDMI output (at the cost of the laptops main display being off obviously)? -
1. the vx2s should be able to play blu-ray movies on the laptop screen,(although I have not tested this yet, as i don't have a blu-ray disc) but not at 1080P, the screen resolution is 1680x1050
2. no software installed on the laptop to play blu-ray, but I will have a look in the box tonight to see if any of the cds included has powerDVD or something.
3.don't know, don't have the equipment to test this.
JC -
Also are both memory modules exposed for upgrading/replacing etc? As in could I take both out and replace with 2x2GB for 4GB ram? I've heard of some laptops that only expose one module with the other hidden away somewhere, requiring some major surgery to get it out. -

To answer question 3, I believe some VX2 owners have tried this with success so yes, 2 external monitors with hte laptop LCD turned off.
In the case of the VX2S it is based off the V1 series, it is quite easy to change ram, because both slots are located under a panel. You will see a large panel with about 6-7 screws in it, remove it, and then you will see a small panel held in by clips, no screws, use a flat head screw driver and pry it open where it says "open". Then you will see 2 ram slots.
Regarding HD DVD and BD, yes using the HDMI you will be able to get higher resolutions that 1080p, so the answer is yes. -
-
just a little update, if anyone is interested the blu-ray drive is the matsu****a BD-MLT UJ-210s, which sony also uses in their laptop line-up. here is what i found on google: it's NOT the fastest drive on the planet...
Read:

Asus did include a copy of WinDvd from interVideo for playback of HD/blu-ray video. shame they did not include a blu-ray film for me to test it.

Thanks for all the info peeps, some useful info.
What are peoples opinions of the screen? I take it it's a glossy type screen?
I was also looking at the Asus G1 laptop, it seems to have similar specs to the VX2S except without the BluRay. Is it true the VX2S only uses the DDR2 version of the 8600M GT card, and the G1 uses DDR3? What are other differences between these two laptops?
Also could the graphics card in VX2S be upgraded via that MXM thingy?
Damm, it's a tossup between the VX2S and the G1 now -
Sorry one more question.
Do you get the original OEM Vista DVD with this, or is it some stupid recovery disk or partition on the drive? -
All asus products have a recovery DVD that comes with them. It actually installs windows nicely without having to "activate" it. You can just reboot the pc when it asks for the driver cd and your set. No bloat.

I've been waiting to a Dell XPX m1330 since the beginning of july (which as I am sure you are aware many people are) and cancelled the order. I've now ordered a VX2S (black) and hopefully going to receive it today.
I know it's a different beast to a 1330 but as 15" laptops go is is one of the thinnest/lightest - afterall the higher screen res gives a lot more working space. Considered a G1S but the DDR2/DDR3 issue does not bother me as I don't game very much. I feel I would benefit more from the Blu-Ray drive and the 7200rpm HDD more.
I was tempted by the yellow version but I have not seen one in the flesh - I'm not sure if it might be a bit much for me! -
I agree, yellow is just too flashy for a notebook. This is not a real lambo car after all !
-
I'm interesting to buy the yellow one.
Do you know where's the T7700 model? (Cancel?)
Is it come with blu-ray or HD-DVD?
(The spec. in ASUS website is changed to HD-DVD for ultimate package.)
How's about the heat when it's running full load in 3DMARK06?
Thanks -
