My Eee is on its way so I thought I would get this thread finally started. I think we need a spot to hang out and share info on the Eee. Please post any helpful info and feel free to ask questions.

What i would like to know is--
How do we install Windows XP without a USB CD/DVD Drive?
Ordered mine from Newegg already. -
FlipTwisteR Notebook Consultant NBR Reviewer
http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=509
I looks like it is easier doing it from USB CD/DVD drive. -
You can't. You need to have an external CD/DVD drive
-
Nah, plenty of people have installed their OS's from USB, I did it on my old sony when my DVD drive died on me.
-
I plan on buying one in about a week. Can this play mkv, ogm, and realmedia video files? This would be perfect for watching anime.

http://smplayer.sourceforge.net/en/linux/index.php
It supports a wide range of codecs and file formats, including MPEG 1/2/4,DivX 3/4/5, Windows Media 7/8/9, RealAudio/Video up to 9, Quicktime 5/6, and Vivo 1/2. It has many MX/SSE(2)/3Dnow(Ex) optimized native audio and video codecs, but allows using XAnim’s and RealPlayer’s binary codec plugins, and Win32 codec DLLs. For video output, nearly every existing interface is supported. It’s also able to convert any supported files to raw/divx/mpeg4 AVI (pcm/mp3 audio), and even video grabbing from V4L devices.
I'm not sure if SMPlayer supports Matroska and OGM but I know that VLC does. VLC has a linux version that should run on the Eee. There are also lots of other linux media players out there though I'm unsure which will install on the Eee. -
i'm planning to get this toy since it so cheap but i'm from Australia have to order from the State again...
-
I got one yesterday and want to share the initial impression with you guys. all i can say is it's very nice!
First thing after i received it was reloading XP. there were a couple partitions in it, and i deleted them all and reinstall XP. after the installation and patch updates, I ONLY HAD 400MB LEFT... which was pretty disappointed at that time.
But after i did some research, i found out theres a program out there called XPlite, its actually a program that can slimdown XP. it lets you to pick the windows components on your own (kinda like the add/remove windows components) so i purchased the program and removed some of the unwanted applications like modem apps, assessibility programs etc and finally i am able to free up till 1.86GB. now i just need to get a 4GB SD card for storage. overall im really impress with this little machine!

How do we access the KDE Desktop environment? The "Easy Mode" that is standard looks kinda ugly, or at least childish.
-
FlipTwisteR Notebook Consultant NBR Reviewer
Go to console (CNTL-ALT-T).
Type:
sudo bash
apt-get update
apt-get install ksmserver
apt-get install kicker
Reboot (should go to Easy Mode)
Go to Settings → Personalization
Select “Full Desktop Mode” under Login Mode
Reboot.
The version above appears to run slightly slower than actually launching KDE itself, the below version forces the EeePC to launch KDE every time, the downside being that you cannot return to Easy Mode without re-modifying the files to reverse what you've done.
1. Open Console
(CNTL-ALT-T).
2. Create a sudo'd bash instance:
sudo bash
3. Update Repos and Install ksmserver and kicker
apt-get update
apt-get install ksmserver
apt-get install kicker
4. Backup our simplestart.sh (this file told Easy Mode to launch)
cp /usr/bin/startsimple.sh /usr/bin/startsimple.sh.old5. Next copy startkde to startsimple.sh
cp usr/bin/startkde usr/bin/startsimple.sh6. Reboot!
You know have KDE installed and will auto boot to KDE, remember you cannot go back to Easy Mode unless you replace startsimple.sh with the backup copy which can be done by Opening Console and running:
sudo cp usr/bin/startsimple.sh.old usr/bin/startsimple.sh -

Ineresting read here about Asus, Jonney Shih, and the Eee here at Forbes:
http://members.forbes.com/global/2007/1112/024a.html
Some quotes:
"Meanwhile, the prospect of millions of new PC users buying the Eee PC without Windows seemed to worry Microsoft. Just before the launch, it agreed to give Eee PC buyers the option of getting Windows for under $40, more than a third off the standard price."
"For instance, the 2- to 8-gigabyte memory cards can be upgraded to 32 gigabytes and the RAM from 256 megabyte to 1 gigabyte by simply taking out two screws on the back of the machine, something that Shen demonstrates but isn't including in the marketing materials."
It looks like that empty slot (mini PCIe?) might be additional SSD memory. I suspect that the 8G model will be exactly the same as the 4G but with a 1gb stick of ram and an additional 4gb for the SSD in the mini PCIe slot. I can not imagine that Asus would have another motherboard with another 4gb added to the SDD. If this is the case I suspect that we will be able to buy these SSD add-on cards to upgrade the SSD in the future. -
Has anyone tried to tether their mobile phone to the EEE? Does this work with the linux interface? I imagine XP would work fine...let me know if anyone has tried this.
-
You can also use Nlite to slim down XP, Its completely free to use and quite advanced, I think it can even be used to make USB bootable installs.
-
Wow, just heard about this tonight. Anyone do a review for this yet? Also, I wanted to get some more input from you guys on this.
-
Greetings to all - I just ordered my Eee tonight from NewEgg. Does anyone know how easy it will be to upgrade the SSD drive and what type of SSD drive has to be ordered? It looks like NewEgg has three different connector types for the (few) SSD drives they offer. Thanks...

I think EEE will be really good school companions due to the small size and low price.
However, I think I'll wait until the second generation comes out. -
BTW on sale at the computer markets in HK this weekend.
Selling for c. HK$3k. -
Mine just arrived from NewEgg and is charging up now. First couple of things I noticed:
The screw over the RAM cover does not have a label on it which may mean that upgrading RAM will no longer void the warranty. JerryJ's review and a couple of other posts mentioned having a label over the screw saying it would void the warranty. Don't know if Asus only did that for pre-production/review models, or changed their minds.
This puppy is light and easy to carry. The bottom is nicely weighted, too, so it doesn't slip around too much on my lap.
The keyboard is probably going to be too small for touch typing. I have average man hands - not big, not small. And finger placement/typing will be awkward. May get used to it eventually.
Hinge for the screen is nice and tight -no flopping around or slow descent. Card slot will read MMC, MMC Plus, RS-MMC, SD, and mini/micro SDs with adapters.
USB ports support 2.0 and 1.1.
The Eee also supports an external monitor - just hook it up.
I'll post more after I get it up and running and get some use out of it. -
So far, I'm liking it for the most part. Posting from it now. The keyboard is definitely cramped. A couple of things I'd like to know:
1. Is there a way to remove programs? When I click on "Add/Remove Programs", all I get is a gray box - no text, no lines, nothing. I'd love to reclaim some memory by getting rid of stuff I won't use (games, learn math, etc.).
2. Is it known if any USB mice work with the Eee? The touchpad works fine, but is not as intuitive as a mouse would be.
Thanks. -
ClearSkies Well no, I'm still here..
-
FlipTwisteR Notebook Consultant NBR Reviewer
I suspect that this will be circumvented very quickly. -
Thank you ClearSkies and FlipTwisteR. Great info. I'll try my Logitech mouse later and hope the configuration issue will be overcome quickly. Sure the apps for the periodic table and the observatory are nice, and the potato head game is fun - once. But I don't really need them. Would rather use the available memory than rely on an additional SD Card
-
PortableOne has it in black now. -

I hope Asus comes out with a 10" LCD!

Anyone else having problems with their Eee freezing up (no keyboard, no touchpad) after about 1/2 hour of use? Thanks.
-
Just got my lil' eee about 4 hours ago....so far really having fun with it!
Works great right out of the box......
Anyone wanna buy my TZ150N that I bought 2 weeks ago?.....

I got mine today as well and I must say I'm very impressed. I plan on giving more in depth thoughts later. The build quality and design that went into this notebook for $400 is really amazing. To think that this notebook cost less than my organizer is really astounding. The screen is very good...much better than I thought it would be at this price point.
I installed a slimmed down version of XP Pro and 1gb of ram and I'm very happy with how it performs. I played with the linux it came with for a bit and I was also impressed. Unfortunately I had to have XP on it because there are windows programs I have to have on it (like Visual FoxPro 9). Installing XP was painless. They had all the windows drivers on the DVD. I did it with an external USB DVD drive.
After installing Win XP Pro, Office 2003, and Visual Foxpro 9 I have taken up 1.45 gb of space (including a 256mb paging file). I have 2.25 gb of free space still on the SSD. -
how did you do that?
I mean XP + Office for 1.5GB? How to slim XP down?
and, could you tell me if there's a seal on the screw? will upgrade memory void the warranty?
-
You can reduce Windows XP installation size by "slipstreaming" it with the following program : nlite ( http://www.nliteos.com/index.html), pretty neat little program. Here is the guide and howto : http://www.nliteos.com/guide/

I wanted to put office 2007 on it (I prefer it a lot to 2003) but it just took up more space than I wanted it to. I went with Office 2003 and only installed Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Outlook. If you choose to delete install files at the end it really does not take up that much space.
There was a sticker over screw that I removed. If I voided my warranty I can live with it but I do not expect that to be the case. The upgrade to 1gb really sped things up in XP...it was worth it. -
Removing the sticker voids the warranty with Asus:
Since I've had to RMA mine to Asus, be sure your Eee is working. Put it through its paces. Then tackle the RAM. -
Im impressed with my EEEPC, and i have put it through quite a lot in the past week. I finally got around to installing Windows XP yesterday, and I am not installing WarcraftIII TFT to see how it runs.
will report back later.
Though I noticed the celeron is running at 630 Mhz. Is it possible to increase it back to stock 900Mhz? and if so, what are the consequences? -
FlipTwisteR Notebook Consultant NBR Reviewer
I totally agree with you though. For most people it is not worth the risk to not have it covered by warranty if there is a problem.
Why did you have to RMA it? Was it running on the Linux or Windows XP when you started having problems? Did you try ungrading bios? -
FlipTwisteR Notebook Consultant NBR Reviewer
The Eee runs XP and the other apps so well at 630MHz...I bet it would scream at 900 MHz.
My CPU is only running at 50C so I believe there is some headroom. -
Just bought mine yesterday from a&b sound for a total of around $500 CA ($399 + $50 for the 3-year warranty). Got the very last one in stock; spoke a bit to the store manager who explained to me that a&b sound as affiliated to Asus and may be the only retailer selling the Eee PC in store. When I asked him when they would have more in stock, he shook his head and said he had no idea - 1 sold every 6 seconds in North America...
I bought a 1GB Memorex USB flash drive and plugged in my microsoft optical mouse and found that they worked immediately when plugged in; that was just great! The Asus graphical interface is both simple and intuitive and will work well for everyday tasks. I don't intend to install Windows XP on this thing anytime soon.
The keyboard is tiny and has buttons placed in odd places in order to cram then all into such as small area. Some buttons, such as the backspace and right shift buttons, have been reduced in size. I found it terribly hard to type at first, as my hands are bigger than average. However, within a few hours of use, I got used to it and was typing away with reasonable ease. The touchpad and single button (with a rocker) are equally tiny, but work as intended. I still prefer using an external mouse and keyboard for the best efficiency.
Battery life is pretty amazing for this little guy. I got close to 4 hours even though its battery is rated at 3. During this time, I had screen brightness at around 75%, sound at 50%, and was running the Open Office app while listening to some music (on and off). Beats the 1 and a half hours by my Acer 5102 any day...
Screen is bright and vivid enough for simple tasks, but its limited resolution of 800x480 will become annoying when viewing certain webpages that require a larger resolution in order to be viewed comfortably.
Sound quality I would rate as average for a notebook. The speakers placed on either side of the 7" screen provide adequate sound although for a better listening experience, I recommend connecting a pair of headphones.
Storage wise, only about 1.4 GB is free to use; the rest is occupied by the OS and recovery partition. As I said earlier, I bought an addition 1GB usb flash drive and will soon buy another sd card to complement it. Don't plan on loading this thing with all you playlists or video files if you don't have additional storage - there just isn't enough space for everything with only 1.4GB free space available.
This thing is almost completely silent due to the lack of a rotating hard drive. The solid state drive also makes this thing quite shock-proof - perfect for just throwing in you backpack. I have not had any issue with heat so far, but the top does get a bit warm during prolonged use - not enough to make it uncomfortable though.
All in all, this thing is an awesome buy. Although there are some more powerfully equipped laptops being offered for 50 bucks more, I still think the Eee PC provides the best bang for the buck in terms of portability and ease of use. -
Agreed, and FYI, WC3 was just installed with no problems, though I had to go into the registry to get it to run at 800x480. Otherwise, the screen doesnt show the whole game.
-
You can flash, AT YOUR OWN RISK:
ftp://ftp.asus.com.tw/pub/ASUS/EeePC/701/
The file is 701-8804.zip. I will NOT be responsible for any damage to your Eee.
That said, my 3DMark2001 score DOUBLED when it was set to 100MHz FSB. -
I'd have to go ahead and say don't try 8804. I flashed it and had a weird motion effect on the screen afterwards. Extremely annoying and hard to look at.
So I tried to reflash to 0401. Now my Eee PC won't even turn on. No lights, nothing. Pretty sure the bios is corrupted :-( -
HTH,
Mark -
I wish I could reflash it again, except nothing happens at all when I press the power button. The laptop is completely dead. No lights, the screen remains blank, etc. I can't run the flash utility because the laptop never actually turns on....
I don't have any storage cards inserted and I haven't performed any modifications. All I did was install XP and try to update the bios :-\ -
Well, one last technique to try for you....just going from previous flashing experience with Sharp Zauruses.....
Try unplugging AC adaptor and take out battery.
Wait 5-10 minutes...
Put battery back in and then plug in AC adapter.
Then see if any lights light up...if so, try turning on eee.....
If that doesn't work, check user manual for guidance...
If that doesn't help, contact ASUS....
HTH,
Mark -
Hopefully your Eee can be brought back to life ... if not, then hopefully your warranty is still intact! -
Does anyone know if there's a temperature monitor program like Speedfan that can be used on the Eee?
