I'd recommend buying another caddy from asusparts.eu or the asus e-store (if they become available) rather than using double-sided tape, but that's me.

I'm new to the forum and I just wanted to introduce myself, but more importantly say a big thank you :D to everyone on this thread, and the Asus forum on notebookreview.com. You have made my decision easy (yet costly) lol in ordering a Asus G73 A-1 upgraded via powernotebooks.com. Thank you all, very knowledgeable group of individuals on this forum. Confirmation was completed today and I can expect mine in about 10 days! Ahhh now how to kill the time, my CPU is acting up with my CIV IV! Ahh life is rough(sarcasm ;) ) Again thank you for all the help and insight, hope to be able to help others in the future.

    Ciao,

    -Frankie

Either do a fresh install or use Acronis to image the original system drive and restore to the SSD. Also get latest Intel RST drivers.

You can order the drive caddy online.

I'm wondering about the lingering issues I have with my G73. These two items have lengthy threads, but no resolution. I'm talking about the keyboard missing keystrokes and not being able to boost the base on the sub with the creative software. Does anybody know if these are on ASUS radar for a fix? If not, does anyone know how to get their attention? I doubt that calling level 1 tech support would get the attention of the people that can address this.

    1) Latest Synaptic drivers on Asus site has gotten very good feeback for fixing keyboard lag. It's an older set than Synaptic's site, but apparently tweaked by Asus.

    2) Bass Boost will not work if the Speakers config in Windows Audio is set / checked to Full Range.

I will try the ASUS driver. Thank you for the tip.

I just looked into the "Full Range" setting. I have never set this and it was not checked. My laptop will work correctly during the session where you enable Bass Boost. Upon reboot, it will freeze about one minute after displaying the desktop. It continues to do that until you quickly go into the Creative control panel and turn off Bass Boost. Perhaps you're saying to check full range? I assumed you were saying that it should be unchecked.

Are you running the Steam client on windows start as well? Classic conflict issue until you upgrade to newer Realtek driver.

I went back and re-read the thread you started about Creative. After I went and looked to see if Full Range was enabled the other day, my laptop started freezing on boot. I reinstalled the whole OS from scratch and did not install Creative. I'm going to make a backup and then try your trick of enabling CMSS-3D and bass boost to see if that avoids the lockups. I think the sound coming from the laptop is miles better with Creative installed and adjusted properly so I hope it works.

Also, the new driver for the TouchPad does not change the keyboard missing keystrokes. Sadly, the only solution I found that completely eliminates it is disabling the touch pad in BIOS. I have typed several messages in the forums tonight since disabling the touch pad in BIOS and haven't had a single missed keystroke.

Just makin' sure... You don't HAVE TO disable tp in bios. The only reason for doing so is that you don't want to accidentally touch the tp while typing. But someone said that you can also use this program, or this one to turn off the touchpad while typing. That way you don't have to keep the Synaptic program, but still have the benefits. Personally, I think the new driver is an improvement, but still not perfect. I'm leaving Synaptic installed now, but before I had it removed. :D

Get a second HD caddy from either the ASUS e-store or Asusparts.eu . Add in a Momentus drive (since you don't want to go SSD) as your main drive and turn your current one into a secondary drive.

On my G73JH, I have to disable the touchpad in BIOS to prevent the keyboard from missing keystrokes as I type. Disabling it with the Fn key does not solve the problem. Touch Freeze type apps do nothing for the problem either. After I disabled the touch pad in BIOS I have not had a single missed keystroke. I can't live with the missing key press because I use this laptop for work and it makes me look like an idiot that can't spell in my email communications. I'm disappointed that I have to disable hardware on a $1500 laptop to make the keyboard work correctly, but I'm happy there is a workaround that actually works.

I'm on 209. I put Creative back on my rig with CMSS and bass boost enabled. No more lockups! There is a NIGHT AND DAY difference with this software. I don't think the subwoofer works at all without it because it sure doesn't sound like it's doing anything until I load Creative. Very nice. Thanks for all the leg work on that one!

My keyboard seems to miss keys no matter what unless I disable the touch pad in BIOS. Touch Freeze, latest Asus driver, latest Synaptic driver... nothing helps. I even tried running with a standard Generic PS2 keyboard filter and that doesn't matter either. I did a clean install and used the latest Asus driver to no avail. I finally tried disabling it in BIOS and the problem is completely gone.

Has anyone tried adjusting the latency setting for the touchpad? Sounds to me it may be set too high and is being a bushog.

I was thinking along the same lines. I deal with real time systems in process control (I am a programmer). My control systems act this way but it is by design. The control software runs at a higher priority than anything else so all other processes have to wait in line. This keyboard thing acts like that. You miss more keystrokes in a browser comment window than you do in notepad.exe, but you do still miss keys in both. Something is buggy and I think it's software related, but I can't be sure.

I've been having some issues with TF2 lately. Haven't seen it on any other games yet. It is fine when I first start it up, but after a while, it starts beeping when I hold down more than a couple keys.

I've disabled the track pad, and uninstalled the synaptics driver. Turned off the sticky keys, and all of those associated "help" applications.

It doesn't seem like it is actually TF2, because when I try to take screenshots, it doesn't show the little gray bar with the chinese characters in it. But it does show up in the game. I when I try to type into the chat box, it doesn't show normal characters, just these chinese looking ones. The keypad seemed to work fine though.

Anyone have any other ideas what to try? This is very aggravating.

It's none of those things- it's the language settings. Go into the Control Panel and uninstall/disable any languages you don't need. You can also change the key combination that activates it- by default it's something that you can easily hit in an FPS.

That'll take care of it for you.

I'm moving from Europe to study a year in the US. So thought I'd buy a laptop..
So far its stood between the m11x, m15x, Asus G73, Envy 14 and a few more.. :p Having a hard time choosing one..
I really want a mix between portability (good battery life) and power, but Im realizing that its hard getting the perfect mix.. So think im gonna go for power, but would you bring the g73 to school/work?

    - Whats the average battery life while surfing on the web/screen brightness reduced?
    - Have they sorted out the problems with the keyboard?
    - Where's the best place to buy it from?
    - And is the AC universal so I can use it in Europe as well?

Ari, I´m also going abroad but within the EU. I just bought an Asus G73jh the i7, 6Gb, blue ray version :). From Finland

I dunno, it´s heavy, big and the battery life isn´t the best...buuuut, IT´S DAMN fast, georgeus, beautiful screen (FHD), silent(I mean it, so np in class), cheap for what you get and did I mention GEORGEUS! I can also recommend the backpack, its got good quality and you can even fit a few books in there without pressing the screen (the computer is also closest to your back so there will be minimum pressure on it from books). If you don´t want to carry around an extra bag for your books then then you got yourself a nice combo in the backpack! 17" Backbags are also quite expensive and rare to find.

    A few notes:

I got a G73JH-TZ158Z model (so 6Gb DDR 1333 RAM and 500Gb HDD are the different specs), it was delayed (surprise). Not yet checked temps but I checked the Ati driver, it´s 8.683.0.0.

What surprised me the most (been reading this forum) is that it came with the 209 BIOS! No Fn+Esc freezes no nothing (yet) :D...guess the wait was worth it.

I done the "clean up" and now I´m going to install a AV program so I can start updating the beast :).

Edit: Just Furmarked TWICE (12min and 4min). The machine has been on for like 2 hours before. The CPU temps between 67 and 55 celsius for the cores, running a pretty stock G73 (removed the unecessary programs added virus support). The GPU is maxed out at ~87 celsius. The ambient temp is around 25-26 celsius. I can tell you guys that this makes me a happy man :)

Hi, I'm running a G73J i7 on Windows 7 and I have the hardest time using my internet browsers and typing on it, because, even with sticky keys off and the other languages disabled, I keep managing to hit shortcuts without meaning to. For instance, I just pressed "W" in this textbox and my browser closed. Or I tried to a type a "B" and it made the text bold. I don't understand why shortcuts keep getting enabled when I'm not pressing any other keys. Help? It's driving me crazy.

Ok so I am hoping that I am missing something there...but I am having a real problem with my new G73JH-X1 and switching the boot drive to an SSD. I completed the whole "Make your own Restore Disks" bit (Kinda lame at this price, but whatever) and then I removed the 500gb drive and installed a 120gb SSD. I try to boot to the recovery disks and all I get is a flashing cursor in the upper left corner. So I busted out my Windows 7 disk thinking the clean install option is a good one, and certainly better than making the recovery disks again. This doesn't work either.

What I am wondering is....am I missing a step/trick to doing this, or do I have a DOA SSD?

The SSD is a G.SKILL Phoenix Pro 120GB drive. This is my first venture into SSD but with the HDD being the weakest link in this beast, I figure its an upgrade that HAS to happen.

    Any thoughts?

Ok so a little more digging around and it appears that there is an answer to this mystery...atleast it was a mystery for me. UEFI Mode has to be enabled in the BIOS to get this working. This allowed me to install from either the Win7 disks or from the Restore disks with or without the original HDD in the machine.
