Here's a link to how you can boot XP from a USB drive.
And a link to a method for Vista.

    hey sweeeet,
thanx dude. i will read it right now :)
but this would still depend on whether your bios allow u to see usb or not right?
So still remains the question of whether F8 can do it
any OWNERS of F8 care to shine some light on this?

    Hello!

    I'm planning to buy a F8SV and I have a few questions.

I need to have Vista buisiness on it, is it difficult to get it working on a F8? (any driver problem?).

I live in europe, and the F8 is shipped without the Turbo Memory chip, is there a vacant mini-pcie slot to add one?

Is there any feedback about Unreal Tournament 3 running on it? If no, could someone tell me if the retail version is playable (especially in warfare mode).

Thanks! NotebookReview has been a great source of information.

Proud owner of a F8AS - 1A (have had it for 7 days now (Finland)).

My old acer broke down for me a couple of weeks a go and I just had to buy a new one, and it was a hard choice between the C90 or the F8AS. And I got the F8AS because I was afraid the C90 where to loud.

Well the machine is GREAT. Just love it!

    BUT (yes a but)

It seams like there is a new problem every time I start my computer:

    - When I want to close my computer I close the lid (goes to sleep mode) after about 3-5 minutes it comes on again and theres a error message that bluescreen caused a problem ?!
    - Fingerprint thing doesn't work
    - Sometimes when I surf (FF) the screen freezes and a little *pling* sound appears every time I click in the open window. Restarting the browser fixes that, but it's still weird.
    - Sometimes when the computer turns of the screen I can't wake it up again and I have to close it manually and restart.
    - Asus liveupdate don't work
    - Windows liveupdate don't work

And when I played Serious Sam - The second encounter the graphics where terrible! Every time when there where a little bit more shooting or fire in the game it started to lag. but SS2 works like a charm also Oblivion. I've read that the HD2600 have a lot of bugs in it so I think the reason is there.

Now I finally have a somewhat good gaming notebook but there is no good games out there - must stick to Diablo LoD :D

I'm not a Vista fan and an XP cd is on it's way to me so I'm wondering if anyone have gotten XP to work on this machine?

Or how about a linux distribution? Anyone that works?

XP seems to work well, you just need to desactivate some PCIE device in the XP device manager (you'll find more info about it in GenPC's thread).

For your other problems, it seems pretty weird. Did you updated your graphic driver?

    @eefi

Yeah, firefox seems to freeze a bit due to battery save mode, i directly blame that on it limiting cpu use to about 50%

And ive had no problems with the fingerprint reader, just make sure that your fingers arent too cold or too dry and it should work good, i usually have to blow my breath on my finger tip before i swipe

also, as far as gaming go, atleast with the 8600gt, antialiasing is the man cripple, go find out how much you can overclock that hd2600, it should far pretty well, ive had no problems with any games with a decent overclock and no AA.... beside crysis.... but even then ive managed to work around 22 fps with near very high settings

OC that's something new. God I wish I had taken the model with an Nvidia card, it's so much better and I'm a Nvidia fan :p

Well the fingerprint thing is no big deal for me, I don't use it.

But how about drivers and stuff to XP? I can't find anything on asus site  and these different modes are very important to me, do they work?

And btw I got a bluescreen when I turned of my computer last night :D I even closed it the right way (start->shutdown), how sad is that?

Blue screen on Vista is generaly associated to driver and/or hardware problem.
Did you get blue screens even when you first used it? Do you remember if your laptop was crashing only after installing/uninstalling a piece of software/driver?

If it crash even with the default configuration, it doesn't sound pretty good.

    Hi

Could you be more specific as to where this info is on the discussion board? The search function isnt the best I've encountered.

I've installed XP and I'm running it without any problems except one unknown device which seems to be a infraredremote-thingy.....

    thanks..

Ya I am looking for a similar guide but for a system running ATI. Specifically my F3SA with HD2600.
Anybody knows if theres any working drivers for this in XP? I am affraid to even try it after all the problems I been having in Vista.

Also, out all the bloatware that came installed with the laptop, which ones are actually use full?

I received my F8s-B1 a few days ago, and it hasn't disappointed from what I read in the reviews. I would now like to connect my notebook to an external monitor (Dell 2001FP), keyboard, printer, camera, etc...

I haven't found any docking stations out there that seem to be of decent quality, so I was wondering if anyone here has any suggestions. Thanks in advance!

    Hey,

download this vga driver, it works 100% for HD2600

    http://dlsvr01.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/Drivers/VGA/ATI/V8.391/VGA_XP_070921.zip

I would recommend driveragent.com. It'll find you all the drivers you need for your F8SA, except for one unknown device which I believe is one of the ir-devices on the mainboard.

    best regards

    Hey all,

Can someone comment if they got connecting to a TV with s-video on Vista working for the F8sv. I've been having problems and was wondering if anyone else was experiencing this. My best guess is that it's a Nvidia driver issue.

Ive got it working no problems in vista. I ended up using a double ended yellow video feed wire to go from that adapter to tv. Ive done a bunch of times no problem

    Gobmonster, Thanks for the response.

I found out that it was indeed a driver problem. I was using 167.49 drivers from laptopvideo.com. It seems for me I have to use the official drivers from Asus to have tv out to work. Sucks though since I think the other drivers perform better in games.

I got a question to all the other F8SV owners:

I just got mine about 2 weeks ago. Everything looks good with one exeption:

The lcd lid feels "loose" when i open i and close it. Like it its not tight and snug, and it has a little bit of play. Like on an old laptop, the lid gets loose.

I know its nothing serius, but its still anoying to have this in a new laptop.

    Anybody else has this issue?

tootall4wsu you can try opening up the hinge compartment and tighten the screws. A disassembly manual would be handy.

azelexx let's hope it's just a one-time glitch. What is MC?

Really? how do you do that?
Cus on the right side of the hinge you got the power buttom.

So what, just stick a screwdriver on the left side to remove some sort of cap?
lol uhhhhhhhhh you sure? sounds fishy :D

No, you don't just stick a screwdriver, you obtain a disassembly manual and use it to open up the hinge compartments. Then you tighten the screws that hold the hinges in place.

just did a quick search on google and turned up nothing
Is this problem common for this type of hinge? I recal that this chasis is not just used on F8 series, but also on one of the other business series as well.
Man i really like this laptop, but if its gonna fall appart in less than a year, i rather swich it now. AGAIN! sight

OMG...the scariest S*** happened last night....

I tried plugging an audio 3.5mm wire (both male heads) so my laptop sound can transfer into my LCD TV...cos I didn't want to play on big screen but bad sound quality....

    and then.... BANG!

white smoke on both sides of audio jacks.....

I rang up TV company and headed for asus repair centre, the TV just gave me a new replacement (7 days no-questions-asked replacement) , but Asus said they have to replace my motherboard ><, just on a side note, MY LAPTOP STILL RUNS FINE (with sound too)....just that the audio jack is burnt (ie, can't use headphones)....

anyway....bought myself a USB headphone.... but seriously.... gonna sue the audio wire company... after a few tests with my colleagues we realised that the wire was crappily made and already had shortcircuits within.

MY BRAND NEW LAPTOP >< RRAGGGHGHH

Anyone know when the Asus F8SP is released in Australia and what the rrp is?
Its suppose to have a t8300 and an ati hd3650 which i would take over the nvidia 9500m.
F8SP is exact same as F8SN except different video card

Hello to the F8 owners, how are you guys liking your laptops? Any complaints so far? I am thinking of purchasing one, but I was really looking for a 13". The F8SV-A1 offers much more of performance so I am thinking a 14.1" will do. Do you guys find it to be a bit heavy? Is it easy to carry around say from class to class or even while traveling? What are your thoughts. Thanks!

Well you can look up the differences yourself... and then we'll tell you if they're justifiable or not. If it's just .2GHz in the CPU, then I'll tell you from the outset, it's not worth it. But there may be other things as well...

    to BryanL

    (1) Fingerprint works fine
    (2) Laptop + Power Plug + ASUS laptop bag (comes with the laptop) + earphone + mousepad + mouse = Pretty heavy imo. But not intolerable.

Hey, me being a notebook noob. Would any 667 DDR2 ram fit into the F8SV? Because the A1 comes with 1 stick of 1gb, I wanted to insert another 2gb such as this product: http://www.pcvonline.com/productDetails.aspx?id=6168

Do I just insert it and start up and it will install itself?

    Yes.

    Yes.

Do any of you F8 owners own/owned an A8 series? I'm looking for something a bit higher quality, my A8 is falling apart and the lid seems so easy to scratch. Would love to hear a comparison between the two on build and screen quality, thanks.

Ahh good point TRF-Inferno... I've wanted to know about the build comparason too , the only differences I know is that A8 is 15" and F8 is 14.1"? (correct me if im wrong) and F8 has 8600mGT.

    Regarding build....hmm....hmm.... *bump*
