Has anyone ever installed a clear cover to the outside of their machine to protect it from scratches?

Not that I have seen but a small sleeve should do the job if you take it around a lot.

The touchpad issue on mine went away after I uninstalled the driver and let windows resolve the issue. I had the same problem on my Ativ book 5. I'm thinking it must be a windows 8/8.1 issue. They both had horrible touchpad issues and now they both work great.

Well, I am saying good bye to my UX303LA, I have it up for sale. I have found a better alternative. I have felt that the UX303LA was the best ultrabook I had owned until I ran across the HP Spectre x360. I have had no issues with the UX303LA except for mediocre battery life, a shallow sd card slot, a silly power button and a potential hinge problem.

The x360 that I bought has an i5-5200, 8 GB ram, 256 GB ssd, 13.3 inch 1920 x 1080 touch screen, 56 Wh battery that gives ~10 hours of real world life and a Yoga style 360 degree hinge system. And the price is $999.99 from HP with a small discount possible with a phone order and a little haggling. Build quality is excellent as is the overall appearance.

So, any one thinking about an alternative to the UX303, check out the x360.

    Regards, Jim

Mine is up for sale too. I got a Samsung Ativ book 5 for a very good price and I like it better. The screen is 720p but it actually looks better then the Asus. The Ivy bridge i5 is just as fast. It's an inch bigger and bit heavier but that's it. The build quality seem much better.

Can anyone confirm if the hinges on the Boardwell processor version of the Asus ux303la have been improved. On the Amazon website, for the laptop people asked this question and apparently Asus responded that they have.

I want to buy this machine, and I need to know if manufacturing problems remain. Thanks

    Hey guys,

I'm a new owner of the UX303LA. Just wondering, do you guys have a bit of the backlit keyboard going through the vents? Like this:

That can't possibly be normal behavior. I emailed to ASUS showing them the photo and they said that this is not normal.

However I did go and get my laptop replaced last night to grab a new one. The same issue on the new as well. I'm quite disappointed.

The back of the keyboard will emit some stray light (just like an LCD), this will come through the vent slightly.

Looks like it's an imperfection from the design of molding.

This is not only an issue with Asus notebooks, I've had it happen with a lot of notebooks lately. I'm at a point where I've tried several brands and multiple products this summer but I still have not found a laptop that is defect free out of the box. It's getting really frustrating.

I wish I didn't sell my 13" rMBP because I'm thinking I should buy one again now. I'm 100% sure a MBP will be 100% perfect when I pull it out of the box, I've never had trouble with Apple hardware.

As I said backlit keyboards do leak light and will shine through any gaps. With apple you pay and get a more thermally restricted device.

I was not talking about the keyboard backlight light leak, because that would not bother me at all. I'm talking about damaged, crooked and poorly manufactured machines right out of the box.

The UX303 series has its hinges screwed in a piece of crappy plastic resulting in broken hinges, how is that quality? That is how Acer did it several years ago, I thought we passed that stage... And again, it's not only Asus having this issue... This is not a flame towards Asus or anything like that.

    Hi, I recently purchased the ux303la-us51t (ux303lab).
2 things I noticed that really hurt the user experience:
    1. On Battery the cpu speed is full speed always. (2.17Ghz) but when plugged in the speed is optimized and when idle usually is between 0.8 to 1.6 Ghz. That doesn't seem normal, right?
    - found the setting in the advanced power settings. For some reason the balanced profile was set to 100% minimum cpu speed.
    2. In Chrome I noticed that when the "momentum" scroll is active, and I press Ctrl the page zooms in/out. It behaves as if I was pressing and zooming by purpose.
    _
And something weird: if the processor is Intel i5-5200 2.2Ghz, how is it that sometimes on battery it jumps even to 2.5Ghz? ( http://i63.tinypic.com/sb57ki.png)

I5-5200 2.2GHz base, 2.7ghz maximum (single core) turbo, dual core will be a bit lower than that.

    gotcha! thanks.
    anything about no. 2?

btw, have you noticed that Chrome is demanding a lot of cpu power? Youtube videos don't play well at all. (drivers are updated, win 10)
Edge seems to handle even 4K youtube videos with 1.4Ghz at 25% load. I wonder if this how Chrome acts on all Win10 laptops or is it something specific with the zenbooks...

I'm not sure exactly what you meant by 2. Do you mean you hold control and it starts randomly zooming in and out?

That's because the momentum counts as a scroll and the input is still active (it has no idea if you are at the top of your browsing window or not) so when you press ctrl, ctrl + mouse scroll is a zoom shortcut. You could look into the browser and disable this short cut if you like.
