if in XP, just go on my computer and double click on the webcam . It'll start. Sometimes it doesn't work cause There is some problem with the softwares. OTherwise, you can use Chat messenger like AOL, YM, MSN to turn it on.

Have you notices that the webcam is not 30FPS like others? The pictures is kind of lagging while viewing through my computer.

Another way is using youtube service, they also have software to activate your webcam.

It is BlueTooth time. Since I got it may as well try and use it. I am currently charging up a Bluetooth Stereo Headset by Motorola. Got it at Circuit City. I am checking to see if I can listen to music on my 'Z' via bluetooth. It was overpricesd (99$). So...if it works; back it goes and I will get one off of eBay or somewhere for between 15 and 50 bucks.

Has anyone used BlueTooth devices yet?...vern will keep you posted

Could not get it to work. It was primarily meant for a Cell Phone, Ipod, or MP3 player. I suppose to stream music from PC, but it recommends adding a device. Don't want to do that. The saleperson told me to try it anyway...It goes back. The model is HT820 Stereomoto

Bluetooth works fine on my machine. Have a combo mike/earphone that I use alo with my cell phone, mouse, GPS, and a serial to bluetooth converter that I use for remote weather. Key thing is to enable the bluetooth radio.

Asus install should have put a little icon in your toolbar that controls both the wireless and bluetooth radios. Toggle it until you get bluetooth on (with or without wireless). Any bt device that comes in range should be discovered and kick off the wizard. Some have a button that must be pushed to "pair" devices. Once bt is kicked off you should also see an icon in the tray for bluetooth that looks something like a sideways W. BT can be configured by clicking on this icon.

Pairing often requires have an access code. This code will be needed with the wizard to finish the pairing process. The code is 4 digits and will either be in documentation or on the device.

There are some bt devices that are serial bluetooth devices. What happens is that the device connects via bluetooth but appears also in the serial devices so that programs think they've found a COM device. This sounds a little confusing but it works most of the time. When it doesn't it's usually a COM conflict (two devices using COM10 for example). Starting in XP the number of COM ports was increased so don't be suprised if you see something like COM20.

Follow the wizard - it's pretty self explanatory.

    Hi!

I got my notebook yesterday, it's awesome!
I have trouble only with the chkmail utility and the mail led (I'm using Thunderbird). Any suggestions, ideas?
Bluetooth is working perfectly, I have a SE W810i mobile phone and I can control my notebook with it. Cool :)
I suggest that you install your bluetooth device as a HID device and it'll work.
There is a GF 7700 in it, although I ordered it with a 7600 :) I'm considering to send it back :)

Oh, and one more thing: how can I get to the BIOS screen???? I tried every button (del,Fxx,ctrl+tab, etc) but none of them worked.

    Thanks!

Another problem: I've just plugged in my A.C.Ryan external drive using eSATA but NOTHING! I can't see the drive neither in bios nor in windows. HELP! :) I need those bytes on that hdd.

    Thanks!

have you try power first then Plug in ESATA?

Or Plug in ESATA first then power on while computer is on.

Sometimes u need to restart to make the drive really work.

Thanks BeasleyM....for your BlueTooth advice. I could not get the headset to work (it apparently was meant only for iPod, MP3, and Cellphones), but I did pick up a Vargus BlueTooth mouse and it was a piece of cake to pair up with my 'Z'. Love it....Will keep eye open for a bluetooth headset dedicated for audio/music only.

    Bluetooth

I use an iTrek M5 Bluetooth GPS receiver. Works fine. (That with MS Streets & Trips is the only major reason why I have Windows on this computer.) In Linux it seems to detect Bluetooth but I've never tried to use it.

    eSATA

I'm not an expert here but the enclosure and cable might be factors. Any SATA-II drive should work with the right connectivity. I have an Icy Dock eSATA enclosure, it was the highest rated one on Newegg. Works spectacularly!

eSATA still doesn't work. I've tried everything. As I wrote I have an A.C.Ryan AluBox eSATA&USB2 Combo with a Seagate Barracuda 320Gb SATA2 16M HDD. It works fine with USB but not with eSATA. I've tried to plug the cable while the machine was on, rebooted it but non of these helped. I tried to put the enclosure into its stand, nothing happened...

So I would appriciate any help!

    Thanks!

Does anyone have a problem with their volume function keys? When I use them I get the graphic on the top left side of the screen that shows my volume going up and down, but it has no effect on my actual volume. I can change the volume using the volume control in the taskbar just fine. If someone has a solution it would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have a Z84Jp and am using Vista 64 Bit Home Premium. I've had it for about two months...

Recently when playing back MP3 files, I get a notification window with the following:

"CDfxSdk Message: DFX SDK Evaluation Expired"

When I hit "ok" the message goes away and the MP3's start playing...

I assume this has something to do with the audio codec/drivers, but am not sure how to fix it. Suggestions?

    - Will

Can I interrupt a minute? I am getting a new laptop next month in the Z84J price range (in Singapore), but I am not a techie nor gamer, so I don't plan to tinker or upgrade my new laptop (will just buy a new one after a couple of years). I run graphics programs (CAD) and business applications (little muti-media), would prefer a matte screen but that becomes more and more difficult. Almost went for HP DV9500t then I heard about ASUS, would you guys recommend the Z84JP for an old guy like me? (I am a 62 year old professional)

    Thanks

Most notebook nowadays comes with Glossy screen , but u'll love it because of the sharpness of the pictures and the color won' t washed out easily as you see in matte screen.

I'd recommend the Z84J if you like it better than the HP and other brand. Since every1 has the HP and Dell, i think it's time to do something different when using a "no brand name " notebook.

Some of my friends at school interested in the notebook as well.

Features that i like: 4 speakers + sub, webcam 2.0mp good quality, hardware repair / upgrade is easy to access , sturdy built , good screen quality and color, HDMI output and a decent graphic card, which allows a little bit of gaming and Auto CAD as well.

I guess it will, you have to do a little bit more work on the drivers though. I hope XP driver will work with Windows 2000.

I just ordered this with a Intel Core 2 Duo Processor (T7500) with 2 Gig of ram and an 80Gig hard drive.

I followed the instructions, but when I turn it on everything sounds fine, but nothing ever shows up on the screen. It doesn't even light up like it has power. I even plugged in a monitor to make sure the screen wasn't dead but nothing. I am not sure if the fan for the video card is supposed to come on when powered on, but it doesn't so not sure how to proceed and this is the only place I have found info about this laptop.

Any help would be appreciated on how to proceed for the people who do have one of these.

    Thanks

errr.. your laptop won't work with a Core 2 7500. because it uses the 945 chipset.

    945 chipset supports : T5500 5600 7200 7400 7600

The new Santa Rosa laptops will use T 7100 T7300 T7500.

Seems like you went to trouble there.

Hi, I can't imagine a 200GB drive not working, as long as it is standard SATA. ASUS probably said that because until recently 160GB was the biggest you could get in the right size.

FWIW, I run a 500GB drive off the eSATA port, which I think uses the same chipset as the internal drive.

Hi yodermk, Thanks for replying! I'm just trying to get as much info as possible before I order the Z84JP!
Do you think it's a really top of the line notebook?? I've always liked Asus products! And I like being able to install what I want in a computer, not someone elses opinion of what they think I should have!!

Z84j is decent specs out system not for top of the line gaming although the look is clean and some other feature makes buyer like it.

2gb will work but 4gb SD card might belongs to the SDHC line some1 should try it though.

I personally use memory card reader ( about 11$ ) 52 in 1. Works great . My camera use CF card so i can't use the available slot in the laptop.

Hello again, I got the right processor and am up and running. My only problem left is the internal wireless card I got seems to have VERY small range. So I am not sure if I didn't hook up something properly. By just inputting the card in to the bottom is it all set? or is there some kind of antenna I am supposed to hook up? lol

I have a new Z84J laptop that I put a T7200, 80GB hdd, wireless card and 2GB memory. When I turn it on, there is no input on the screen. I did notice that the video card fan does not spin. Is it temperature controlled?

If the screen is not displaying anything, what is the steps for troubleshooting?

lan-x: this is real basic but you might check that the cpu is oriented correctly and that the screw that locks the pin in has been tightened. As a bare minimum you need one stick of memory and the graphics chip running. I believe, but haven't tried, running without a hard disk.

A couple of questions on batteries. I've used as couple of different utilities and they report that the six cell battery I'm using has a 51840 mwh max capacity but that full charge 47855 mwh. Does that mean I've lost 4000 mwh of battery in one month already?

Secondly, while looking at BIOS settings for a problem I noticed there is a battery calibration utility under the power setting. I can find no documentation for this utility on Asus' website or in the manuals. Anyone have a clue what this utility if for and how to run it?

    Hi!

The HDD in my Z is working all the time. It's not very bad, but it's annoying when your notebook is blattering periodically when it's idle. I had similar experiences with my previous computer, a windows reinstall always solved the problem. Now I'm tired of reinstalling it, so I'm hoping you can help me.

My other problem is that I can't connect my 5.1 speakers to the notebook.
It is an analog system and I've tried every variation with the jacks, none of them workdes. I get stereo sound if I plug the front spekaers into the headphone jack, but no 5.1. Please help, I don't want to throw away my rear and center speakers!

    Thanks!

Meanboy.....you can connect analog 5.1 speakers by using the front 3 jacks. I connected my desktop's altec lansing 5.1 self powered analog system to the Z84J.

It is done by selecting 5.1 output in Realtek HD Audio Manager (should have an icon on the taskbar by the clock).

Go on the 'Speakers' tab. As you connect jacks to the front 3 audio ports, you will notice the diagram on the ports on the right darkening and lightening. This shows you which jack is being connected: "Rear Speakers Out", "Front Speakers Out", and "Center Speaker and Subwoofer out".

This is the typical 3 plug setup for 5.1 analog computer speaker systems.

Refer to your users manual for your speakers to make sure they all match up to what your computer is telling you.

Hey all I just got my z84j from Gentech last week with:
    7700gt
    2gigs of ram
    160gm 5400rpm HD
    T7200 2.0ghz
with Arctic Silver 5 all around

I absolutly blow away similarly priced notebooks in games, 3D rendering, Photoshop, and multi-tasking. I'm a longtime system builder and overclocker of desktops but this is my first laptop. I've been able to OC the 7700gt to 500core/460mem and boost my 3Dmark 06 from 2391 to 2821 and keep my new games (Fear, S.T.A.L.K.E.R., Rainbow 6 Vegas) stable above 30fps.

Some things have been odd though. Does anybody know how to change the default fn media keys (ff,bk,play, stop) map to itunes rather than WMP? Does the location of the fn key annoy anbody else? Guess im use to the large Ctrl key on my desktop.

    Thanks in advance!

well, its default.. you can't change the media keys to itunes( that's sucks right?) I prefer multimedia keys like Dell Inspiron built in the BIOS so it can connect to different players in the computer , not just the WMP.

man.. i felt like upgrade my video card to 8600 GT ... stay tuned... seems like i have to save 200$ for that project.

Thanks Bobosaw, but it's not working for me... I don't know why.
If I select Dolby Digital 5.1 it says "Only digital S/PDIF output".
No matter which plug I plug in, there's only a "Front speakers" option, no rear or center/sw. I tried selecting "No S/PDIF output" in S/PDIF Options, no change. I went trough all the possibilities I could thought of, non of them worked. What am I doing wrong?? :(

    Problem solved.
I've downloaded the latest Realtek driver (not from ASUS!) and installed it.
    Everything is working now.
