Coretemp reports 50c at idle and 70c under load. This seems to be extremely hot but Asus says its normal. They will not elaborate on what they would do to the machine if I were to send it in. Was the thermal grease a known problem and has anyone reapplied it themselves?
    Thanks

Help! Ive lost the USB cord that charges the Bluetooth mouse that comes with the W7J. :( Its a Sunday afternoon now and Asus is closed.

If I call them tomorrow, will they be able to supply me with just the cord or will they try and sell me the whole mouse and cord together?

Can I buy the cord at any electronic shop? If so, does anyone know what type of connection on the other end (the bit that connects with the mouse itself) is?

Hey guys about putting a 2gb Ram module into the w7j (you know how it says its only expandable to 1.5gb), i've got 2 questions if someone could help:

    1. I'm using vista, will the performance increase be noticeable from 1gb to 2.5gb? Keeping in mind that CPU-z says that my 1g (2x512mb) is in dual channel at the moment - so that means when i stick in the 2g and take one of the 512's out, i'll lose this 'dual channel' effect?

    2. i'm looking at "Corsair 2GB Value Select (USA) DDR2 PC-5300/667 200-pin Notebook Ram", i'm not sure if all notebook ram is the same or.. theres something special i should be looking at for compatibility. So will this module work?

Thanks, any information would be appreciated. =]

    cheers rogue monk.

    1. Can i ask you rogue monk, what your cpu and hdd temperatures idle and load at?
My harddrive gets so hot.. i would love to chuck in a 7200k one too but the stock 5400 one is already so hot. My fingers get all sweaty using the laptop.

    2. Does the suped up harddrive drain significantly more battery?

    cheers

OK, the repetitive topic about how much memory you can stick in (slightly) older systems..... but that's ok :).

2GB RAM sticks weren't available or really even in production when Asus released the W7 18 months ago to spec into the system, so 1GB was the max added memory that they tested -- hence the 1.5 published max. However, multiple users have reported no problems with 2GB sticks in the system, which are now readily available and reasonably priced. You'll be fine as long as you match the correct ram freq.

Very easy. 1 screw, and then just pop the little plastic door off, and viola, you can easily access the stick of RAM. Swapping the RAM on my W7S took me less than 2 minutes.

    Couple questions...

How can I tell the speed of my current ram?

What type of improvement will I notice in multi-tasking with winxp, as programs don't fire up that quickly with the 1 gig of ram I have. Notebook is the W7J duo T2400 @ 1.83GHz.

    Thanks!

Greetings, I just discovered this site today and enjoy the site. I am a W7J owner (T2400, 1.83CPU, XPPro, 1 GB RAM) which I use constantly and have done for over a year with out problems at all.

I found WiFi is improved greatly by going into the Properties of the Intel 3945AGB Device, selecting Advanced, scrolling down to PowerManagement, unticking Default, and shoving the slidebar up to Highest which will reduce battery life a bit, but makes the thing a lot more useable.

I have just reloaded a new W7S 3P100E ([email protected], 1.5Gb RAM) with XPPro using the W7J XPPro Recovery Disks but downloading all of the drivers from the ASUS site including the Chicony Camera, with excellent results - it rocks!

See Vivek's response 12/2 on the previous page for your answer on access.

However, the max on the W7 is going to be 3.5GB, and will have to wait for any 3GB chips to be produced (which may be never, it's an odd number). The 512Mb onboard memory cannot be removed. 4GB chips, when we get to that point, may never work because it will overmax the board and the W7 is likely to be EOL by then (which means that Asus will not release a BIOS update to fix it). The practical use of more that 2.5 GB is debatable in the first place, since only in things like RAW image editing and supermax multitasking is that much needed, and most current Asus notebooks now won't even address the full 4GB if you can put double 2GB chips in. The notebook won't run games that need that much memory well enough to be practical, probably.

This thread is so big it's kinda hard to search. Anyone know how to schedule a power off on the W7J? People tell me that I have to do it through bios but I don't see such feature. Can someone please show me the way? Thanks.

What do you mean schedule a power off? Via Windows power options, you can set the computer to stand by / hibernate / shutdown after any amount of time being idle.

    hi,

my purpose, for example, is to shut down my laptop at 7:00am. I understand that most computers have that capability that is set in the bios but i do not see it on my w7j. anyone know how?

A-ha. Even if it's not in the BIOS there is software out there that's able to do that. I don't know the names but google should help you.

You might also use the Task Scheduler of Vista or XP to do that. I don't know how though.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Hello...

I have an opportunity to purchase the ASUS A7S-A1 and wanted some
information. Can anyone tell me if the video card is upgradeable or is
it built onto the mainboard, also what CPU will it support? Can it support
dual internal hard drives? or replacing the supplied optical drive with a
    BD-R drive.

What is a good price range for this model Asus.

Posted a question on the A7 in the W7 Owner's thread? Probably a mistake -- start a new thread in the main page and you should get some other responses :).

    OTOH.....

    1. No; yes.
    2. ?
    3. No.
    4. Bezel won't fit if you replace, the existing GPU is likely incompatible with HD support, and then there's the question of drivers.

It's been a year since I've had my W7J and I've loved every minute of it. Great size, built in camera, and descent wifi signal. However, I've also had a few complaints.

    1. In 'high performance' or 'max performance', the notebook on the fan turns on and is extremely loud. Kind of disturbing in class when the fan turns on b/c the antivirus program is running. Problem doesn't exist when in 'office mode'

    2. I want to upgrade my memory. I've been meaning to since I purchased it but law school just took over my life and it's been on the back burner. Now that I'm getting money back from taxes, I'm thinking of upping my memory. Does anyone have suggestions on what size memory would be best for me? Also, where is a good place to purchase the memory? I'm currently running XP but may reformat and move over to vista this summer. The programs I use most often are mozilla, itunes, and MS Office.

    Thanks everyone!

Also, are there any popular mods that members have done on their W7J? I see that some recommend swapping out the network card but I found that a bit too risky :p

You only have one slot to upgrade. Grab a 2gb SO-DIMM and slap er right in there. you'll end up with 2.5 gigs and it'll be a lot snappier.

I suggest you stay away from Vista. XP runs perfectly whereas Vista continues to have compatibility and all other kinds of annoying issues. (YMMV on that, lots of people run their stuff fine - it's a preference at this point really.)

I have the first W7J model that was released about a year and a half ago with the 80 gb hard drive.

I would like to know why the W7J came with the hard drive partitioned to a c drive and a d drive. All the files that came with the W7J go to the c drive but the d drive remains empty. The c drive was partitioned to hold 54.8 gb while the d drive was partitioned to hold 36.4 gb.

I would like to be able to use the d drive because my c drive is beginning to fill up.

Asus partitioned the drive to hold OS and data. The C was the former, D was the latter. You can install/store anything you like in D because it's working just fine (except C is generally the default directory whenever you install something, so use the custom install options and put them in D), or else use something like Partition Magic to combine the two into one.
