I saw the same link, but I also saw someone say they messed up their other hotkeys with that program (or maybe it was another one). The CD button doesn't mean too much to me anyway. As long as I can use the next/play/etc buttons with Winamp, I'll be good.

Hm... I guess I'll try the program out since none of the hotkeys will operate winamp in their native mode.

Hey guys, quick question: will the W3J support the 160GB 5400.3RPM Seagate Perpendicular HDs?

I see no reason why it shouldn't, though it probably has to be an IDE drive since the W3J uses IDE and not SATA for the hdd.

Reason I ask is because on the ASUS global site it says:

    Hard Drive: 60 / 80 / 100 / 120 GB supported

I'm not sure if the BIOS will support 160GB. Anyone else know about this?

BIOS should be fine with 160GB. The site info was written before 160s were available (or even close to production, probably) and hasn't been updated to reflect the change in current max HD volume. Asus isn't known for keeping their site map absolutely up to date.

Check out mastha212's thread about his experience for more info on the 5400 perpendicular drive.

    hello,

someone can tell me how upgrade the memory on the w3j (512mo -> 2go).

because I read that one slot is easy to access but the second are not.
where is the second slot ? under the keyboard ?
can you tell me the step to dismount the notebook and put the second Go of memory.

thanks a lot for your answers

Under your W3J there are 2 screws that hold it on that side and they are marked with the letter K and they are recessed farther than the others. On the top side at the back of the keyboard if you look closely you will see 4 little tabs overlapping the keyboard itself. Push these tabs in and they will "pop" and release the board. Carefully slide the keyboard up towards the screen and look to the middle and you will see a chrome looking slot cover. This will slide off and you will be able to access your memory. If you are careful you will not need to disconnect your keyboard and should have plenty of slack.

Thanks.. but mastha212 has the 80GB not the 160.. I haven't heard anyone actually show proof that the 160GB 5400.3 Seagate works with the W3J and that BIOS will support it. I'm getting my W3J this weekend, and I need to decide if I should spring for one of these. Can anyone else confirm?

No version of Everest "supports" the w3j. It doesn't recognize the chipset but it can tell you what pretty much everything else is, including the ram in question.

Yeah guys.... I haven't personally put the 160gb 5400.3 in my w3j, but I do have one installed in a w7 and it works fine...... it also works fine with every other notebook we've installed them in..... including the z62f, z70va, v6j, w7j..... there are probably more of them, but I know we didn't have problems with those.

I had something else crop up with my notebook. I have the P4Gear software (Asus Power Settings Program) running and when I went to open my laptop (while it was on) after it had been closed for at least 3 hours, it wouldn't turn the screen back on. Is this because of the power program or is there a button that I have to press?

Edit: Updated to the latest BIOS, maybe that will solve the problem.

Just used Everest on my W3J and found out that memory is actually 533MHz instead of 667MHz (I was told at the store I bought it from that is had the latter :X). I know there's not much difference but I'm pissed off lol; why did they have to lie about it, I would still have bought it anyway. Now I'm going to demand an upgrade.

Here's the link to the pages with photos from Asus' own W3 guide, covering the underside and keyboard memory upgrades; pages 5-8. The W3j should be nearly the same, if not identical.

When I was researching about a new laptop, it was mentioned that the new Dual Core processors had a problem where if you had any usb device plugged in, it would stop the processor from underclocking the CPU even if you had powersaving modes enabled.

the fix was going to be releaded as a microsoft update, which might have already happened?

Who out there realised that the W3J has both horizontal and vertical movement on the touchpad?

I was just mucking about with the touch pad when the W3J horizontal scrol icon poped up, the strip on the right makes the page go up and down, but even though there is no picture of a scroll bar across the bottom of the trackpad if you put your finger on the bottom of the touchpad and move it left to right, a horizontal scroll icon appears and is pans left and right!! fantastic :D

It's better than knowing everything your laptop can do straight ouf of the box by reading your manual. :D

No, I rarely run it with overclocked settings.

If the splendid video technology advertisement comes up it always loads. If it doesn't, it gets frozen. I've noticed that much.

A few questions from this n00b:

What exactly is the Splendid tech?
Can someone link me to that post where they tell you step by step how to OC with ATI Tools and the Omega Driver?

Splendid tech is Asus' fancy name for the program that configures and changes the video settings of the monitor.

I don't remember where the post is but essentially you need to do the following:

    1. dload omegas from omegadrivers.net
    2. uninstall old drivers
    3. restart
    4. install omegas (screen will looked messed up)
    5. dload ati tool (can also use ati tray tool but most use ati tool) make sure you get the latest .25 beta 13 version (that is the only one that worked for me)
    6. open up the artifact scanner by hitting "show 3d view"
    7. raise clock and mem speeds gradually (don't be hasty). i set the option in properties so that the clocks would raise as I raised the clock and mem speeds so I wouldn't have to "load" the settings everytime I changed them, it was also more stable for me that way.
    8. if stable save those settings and you'll probably only want to load them when the artifact scanner is closed because my comp would freeze a lot when I tried to load it while it was open.
    9. I got speeds up to 500/500, I didn't bother going any farther, you may be able to though.

Great! Thanks that will be useful when I get my laptop in soon.

This is what I plan on doing when I get my laptop:

    1) Reformat (it comes with the XP Pro CD right?)
    2) Install all XP Updates
    3) Install all new drivers
    4) Install Omega drivers & ATI Tools
    5) Make one OC profile for when I'm on AC power, and one normal for when I'm on battery.
    6) Install antivirus and firewall

Any other suggestions? And also can I make a profile so that when I'm on battery not only does it have normal GPU speeds but it undervolts the CPU as well (in order to achieve longer battery duration), and than sets it back to normal and OCs the GPU when I'm back on AC power? Automatically?

currently the cpu cannot be undervolted below its .95V when running on battery at 1ghz...the w3j should automatically switch profiles when going from battery to ac for you (for powergear and any other profile management programs like NHC and rmclock) ...you really can't undervolt/underclokc the gpu that much..and from my research it makes almost no difference in temperatures which is a bit disappointing but thats the tradeoff you make for having an x1600

I'm have a hard time deciding between the w3j or the a8jm. They both seem to perform relatively the same and have the same specs (except the geforce vs radeon). Can anyone give me any reason (besides the better looks) to spend about 350$ more on the w3j instead of the a8jm?

I plan on playing hi performance games and also developing using photoshop.

Anybody know of a way of getting the screen to stay in the native resolution what ever resolution the OS is set to. I.e. so I can have it set to 1024x768 and just use the central bit of the screen when i'm playing games that don't like widescreen.

In ATI CCC, under notebook panel properties (or something similar), under panel settings there should be a choice between scaling image and centering without scaling.

First, update Windows with all the latest patches.

After that, I downloaded a program called "startup", it works like MSConfig, but it goes right into the control panel instead.

The programs I stopped from running at startup:
Intel utilities for wireless (I set Windows to run it)
    Splendid Video Software
    Wireless Console
    Bluetooth Manager
    Nero
    AsusDVD
And probably a few other things....

I also uninstalled Norton and put in ZoneAlarm and AntiVir.

I've found that the Intel wireless utilities can detect more connections than the Windows utilities. Any issues with detection using Windows?

I haven't had any issues using Windows to connect to various wireless networks in the area. It's a lot nicer using Windows just due to the fact that the Intel software uses 3-4+ proccesses to run it.
