Hey Chet, seen that document been through it.

Like I said, I know how to set it up, cause I did it with my exernal bluetooth dongle. The problem is that the connection isn't happening. Exact same process works perfectly on d-link, just not on internet BT

there's a port or something below the express card and to the right of the sd card reader. is this an IR port? can u use a reopte control with a w3j - i.e on meida player in windows media/ vista???

Also, has anyone bought that new asus 20" widescreen lcd monitor with a camera on it? it looks cool - just wondering if it was better than the samsung equivilant in terms of picture quality??
    thanks.

I think what you might want to do is visit your local Cellular store, for your cell company. I can't speak for any other company/store, but the local Cingular store where I got my cell phone and service, has always been very helpful to me, in answering any questions about using their stuff. I know computers, not cell phones, so I admit that i'm a bit stumped about the problem you're having.

Well the problem is with the computer; like I said it works fine with my old bluetooth dongle, but doesn't work with the internal W3J bluetooth. The phone works perfectly with the old one.

Thanks for the help though, I'll continue to research this myself. Sometimes I hate bluetooth :)

So, this is what its like to be in the W3J Owners lounge...pretty cool! :D

Mine just came in today and I wiped out the hard drive and started installing Windows XP Pro. I've read that I may run into some problems at first with XP Pro v1.0 but its all I've got right now and I have SP1 and SP2 on a cd so hopefully I can do that without any problems (knock on wood). Worst comes to worst I will use the restore cd tonight if this doesn't work out!

Has anyone been able to successfully install and run Vista RC1 on his w3j? If yes, did you run into any problems and how did you resolve them? I spent a good half of this past weekend trying to install Vista RC1 but it just would not install...

I've read that Vista RC1 is having tremendous problems with installation and the OS as a whole. Missing icons, and files. It is even worse than the beta. Makes you worry how the final release will be like.

Just one of the reasons I didn't wait for the group-buy, and bought my W3J Yonah. If I'm gonna pay 2500 for a laptop (with all the options, 2 Year warranty + ADP, goodies, extras, and fast shipping...STILL a bargain!), then I want it to work, and keep working.

Oh well...maybe by this time next year, Vista will be service packed and patched. :)

After I did a clean install of XP Pro, I noticed a huge delay when I'm trying to access some sites using the LAN plug at work (T1 connection). Sometimes, the site never comes up...just kinda hangs at the previous page. I disabled the wireless, modem...and I think bluetooth by altering the startup in msconfig and now all pages are coming through fast and clean. Anyone else experience this?

I'm going to start check each one in the startup config to see which one is causing the hang-up, but that's kinda weird.

Hey, I got annoyed with the heat coming out of the vent just ware i use my mouse on my W3J. So i did something about it. This is what I did.

    http://img476.imageshack.us/img476/9594/12092006003ic1.jpg

And it seems to work, not sure how/if it will effect my laptop at all. But it saves my hand from getting all hot.

That's not bad at all. I've been playing Elder Scrolls with OC'd video card, and I can definitely feel the heat.

I might try that, if I do I'll post pics also

i bought a laptop cooler from 'akasa'. Its REALLY good. Yeah, its a bot big and so on, but it cuts out a lot of the heat and if you are really having problems you can plug it in and it has two fans on it that suck all the heat out. come with USB 2.0 expansion ports too.

I am planning on buying a W3J (with the Merom Core) and I was hoping that someone on this board could help me answer a question regarding the removeable optical bay.

I know that funtionally there is very little difference between a slot loading drive and a tray loading drive. They both do the same thing, but I really like how the slot loading drives look and work. Would it be possible to swap out the tray loading optical drive with a slot loading one? More specifically, I was wondering if this drive ( http://www.panasonic.com/industrial/computer/storage/optical/models/UJ846B.htm ) would work with the W3J optical bay drive?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Yeay, I just bought a W3j from MileStonePC!

No pixel problems at all. The notebook runs real smooth no matter what application I throw at it.

However, i'm experiencing alot of artifacting and texture problems in d3d and opengl applications... Alot of texture blinking and dissapearance and some occations where the texture stretches across the screen horizontally or virtically.

I just bought it a week ago. I've tried the catalyst 6.8s and the omega drivers (based on 6.7) but this problem happens with all of them including the stock drivers.

Is anyone else experiencing a similar problem or is it just me.

Sigh... Brand new laptop and I don't want to have to RMA the video card already.

This laptop has a widescreen display, so I'm assuming that when you say texture stretching, you're referring to the display getting stretched to fill your screen size. Some games support native wide screen resolutions, but unfortunately, most don't. You may already know all of this. If you want to know more about gaming in widescreen, check out www.widescreengamingforum.com

Thanks for your thoughts, however that's not what i'm refering to. What i mean is when a model comes onto the screen its texture randomly stretches to the entire length of the screen either virtically or horizontally. That is, just the texture of the model. It as if the wire mesh of the model expanded to infinity on one of the axis (x or y).

In addition to this I have alot of textures blinking in and out of existance. Ie. replaced with a solid colour black and sometimes blinking in and out.

does it do that in every game or just some games? if so, which games? it really sounds like a driver issue, but you said youve tried other drivers. perhaps it is an overheating issue. does the fan sound like it is running correctly?

    No problems with the fan.

Every game I try I have that problem. It also occurs randomly in 3dmark06.

UT2k4, Eve-Online, Heritage of Kings - The Setlers, Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne, Gun Metal, those are just a few off the top of my head.

Just out of curiosity, what drivers is everyone running on? Because if its not the drivers then there is a problem with the card... :(

Good post BTW - I've been off and on the forum since I got my W3j a few months ago, and have been real busy with work so I haven't fine tuned my laptop as I would like to...

I did try to load the latest drives but got stymied at the ATI Validation tool - thanks for the quick link.

    My 3D Mark 2005 went from 3922 to 4180 - SWEET

Have not tried it on a thumb drive. I would be curious though. It handles the MBR differently than XP and previous OSs. Try to mount it and run it that way. Its really easy. It basically mounts the .iso file and runs it as a CD/DVD drive. You can get it for free here http://www.daemon-tools.cc/dtcc/download.php

Its a small app and has come in VERY hany. I keep the VISTA iso on my laptop just in case. No need to carry cds around when you can just carry the isos :)

Hi, I posted this in the networking section but it seems to be the "abandoned" section of the forum so I thought I would post this here since I'm a future W3J owner.

I'm receiving my W3J on wednesday and would like to be able to roam around with it in my house, currently I have 2 computers connected through a switch to the ADSL modem. The reason I use a switch over a router is because I want each computer to have a public IP (my ISP allows up to 4 IPs per modem), so I'd like to continue doing so once I get my laptop.

    I've considered my options:
    1) Add an access point to the switch and connect through it.
    2) Replace the switch with a wireless router and disable NAT/DHCP.

I've looked around for access points and they seem expensive, sometimes even more so than routers. My guess is I should get the router and use it as a "wireless switch", if I even need the routing functions again I can turn them back on.

What I don't know is: do all routers allow you to disable NAT so my 3 computers can fetch external IPs from the modem? I was thinking of getting the D-LINK WIRELESS 4PORT DI-524.

    Thanks :)

I can't guarantee that all routers all pass-through, but I do know that the Linksys WRT54G will support it.

My W3J arrived this past Friday. That's why I've been inactive. I've been so busy playing with it! :)

    Initial Experiences: SWEET!

My biggest frustration has been the Zboard I have been using with it, but have since resolved those issues, which are NOT the fault of the laptop, but windows itself.

This laptop looks NICE. The pictures don't do it justice. The claims of excellent build quality are not exaggerated, either. The entire thing feels solid as a rock. The only part that seems marginally less stable, is the battery itself. As it locks into the back between the hinges, it takes some getting used to, not holding the laptop by that part.

All other parts of the laptop are just darn sexy, and quiet. Very quiet. I opted for a 100GB 7200 RPM Seagate drive, and it's so silent I can't hear it at all, unless there is NO other sound, including the system fan. Only then can I hear it. The rest of the laptop is equally quiet, including the DVD drive.

I have a TON of pictures, I took them at every single step of unpacking this dream machine, but my aged digital camera uses CompactFlash cards, which the W3J does not have a reader for. I will post a thread with the pics, once I find my USB card reader (somewhere?).

I will also post a review of how well the W3J works as a "total package" with some of the other retail goodies I got for it (BT headset, wireless mouse, Zboard, Bay Battery, Bay HDD Drawer, USB Drive, Webcam/KB light, etc). I admit, it's been both a learning experience, combined with that kid-in-a-candy-store feeling of a brand new sleek machine.

So far, I'm LOVING IT! It's everything I was hoping for. :D

yes you are right, it takes some getting used to holding the notebook by the battery. I try and hold it by the other side. It feels like it will move or fall, when you hold it by the battery pack. lol

Update on my heat and video problems - you might find the following link from another part of this site useful.
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=1585829&posted=1#post1585829

Also check out ATI tech support article on problems with the ATI Mobility x1600 when using dual monitors - while running my W3J today in a presentation, I alt-tabbed between Firefox and some presentation software and the system immediately crahsed and rebooted, as reported by ATI as a problem that is being looked into.

737-22836: Switching display while running a full screen D3D application results in corruption with mobile products

A little voice whispers that maybe I made a mistake buying this unit - time will tell. I sure like the "feel and look" but dont have much confidence in its stability for what I need it for (basically running a dual display with presentation software and video for up to 10 hours per day during workshops).

It's ATI problem, not ASUS, maybe only x1600 but it can also span to other cards.

Well, my review might be delayed.

I can't find my USB CompactFlash card reader, for my old digital camera. Unfortunately, my wife is in Scotland right now, and took our newer digital camera with her...so im stuck with what I have.

I may have to buy one...ugh.

I'm still having sound issues w/ mine when watching DVDs from the onboard speakers - EXTERMELY quiet to the point that you can't hear quiet talking over the DVD drive. Don't know if there's a fix for this...

I also ran into a DirectX prob. since downloading the Cat 6.8s...don't know if it's connected.

I'm having the standbye issue as well...not sure what's up w/ that.

Downloading and updating the Catalyst 6.9 doesn't help to fix your sound issues on this moment. If the audio chip doesn't help to figure out this, you need a speaker's amplifier to make it up. Some people share to use a "Toshiba Virtual Sound" to improve the sound, you can try this before searching this link.

Have you changed the volume in the BIOS? There is an option there to raise the system volume

The volume in the BIOS doesn't help to increase the volume under the Windows when playing music or movie and so on. Volume in the BIOS only effect during the POST when the power is on, and the sound can be on or off, up or down for a signal of turning on.
