can anyone recommend me a custom setting for max battery profile?
like lowering cpu and gpu heat, voltage and stuff (I am using power hybrid quiet office with cpu at max 70% but fan is still running on battery and it blows hot air)

I don't know if it is possible to switch easily from overclocked, to regular and underclocked or lower voltage for the laptop?

    thanks! :)

Hi everyone. I got my refurb G51VX-RX05 and I am a little scared by its temeperatures.

After 30 minutes of full stress CPU is at 67C and GPU is at 104C. These are stable temperatures, but they are extremely high.

I cleaned the fan, but that did nothing to improve the overheating. The laptop doesn't feel warm, but the temperatures prove differently.

So 2 questions - I know I can't put MX5 paste, because it will void my warranty, but I also don't want to wait till the s*** hits the fan. What can I do to lower my temps?

I tried undervolting the CPU, but that didn't really improve things either (2C drop, GPU stays the same).

What's the point of the black tape covering the fake intake on the bottom? What happens if I peel it off?

Did you mess around with the BIOS screen that "Volume" and "Play post sound" options? I did that once and noticed it disabled my sound, unless I plugged in headphones or something.

Go to BIOS, reset to user defaults, or manufacturer defaults if that doesn't work (might get double POST/load of splash image).

I eventually figured out how to disable that embarassing exploding sound, for some reason setting POST sound to "yes" and volume to "0" worked, and I still have sound in windows.

    Weird.

    Hey guys,

I have the g51vx-rx05, and the speakers don't work. I don't think that I can fix that, because this is a refurbished laptop and it came like this. Oh well. But the headphones recently stopped working too, and so did the f11 f12 and f10 keys. Any ideas as to what happened and how I can fix it?

Try entering the bios and load user default settings (once or twice), this fixed it to me one time that i lost the speakers. If not try resetting it to factory defaults.

Is anyone running 8GB of DDR2 PC6400 in the g51vx? If so, is it running at 800mhz, and what brand of memory are you using?

And....as for your question, the answer is....be happy and live with it xD

do you notice there are about 160+ pages in this thread? There are about 140+ pages talking about the heat issue from G51VX. I personally think that there is no solution to this problem but still....here are my two little suggestions:

    1. please search this person "Forge" on the forum and see what he did with his G51VX, he's damn good with cooling xD

    2. this is what i did with my G51VX, i manually (hardware wise, not software wise) set my fan running at 100% at all time. Probably one of the coolest G51VXs, but i simply cannot bare with the noise output...soo....i manually turned it off again.

EDIT: i know this is kinda obvious but yeah, maybe get a cooler xD, i recommend NZXT Cyro LX.

I did notice about heat issue but my temperature seem is highest among all(when play starcraft2 with high setting will reach 104 celcius).
I wonder temperature keep hover at 95 celcius frequently while playing will shorten life of graphic card?

Use powermizer. i cant find it directly but i do have it sored on an external hard drive. it keeps your temps around 15C lower. bby default my idle temp is around 65c-67c. with it on it is around as low as 49c-53c. i have gamed on it breifly and i cant rememebr if powermizer was on or not but i saw it on 77c after maxing one game for a few minutes. How old is your notebook also? part my be wearing down and also the nvidia drivers may be stacking high temps.

not sure then. i had mine refurb and thats how mine is. and mine is inmint condtion. but trydiff drivers and powermizer on.
u already claned the fans so u cant do much there. im not into pasting it but you could try that. my temps where like that without a cooler just in my lap.

hmm, yes 104 celcius might be odd but depends....Lets see what are some of the other factors causing the heat issue. What is your room temp? Try install the lastest nvidia driver. Try overclock your P7350.

And yes...heat will shorten the life of hardware components but still, every gpu is unique, not all gtx 260m in the world behave the same. If the above methods do not slightly lower your temp, then i'll have to say just bare with it ><.

    Hope this helps :)

hey everyone: I was looking around on Asus website for some updates for the G51VX-RX05 and their a lot of updates. So if anyone who just got the comp go to the device managment and ASUSTeK Computer Inc.-Support-
    1st select product (notebook)
    2nd series(g51 series )
    3rd G51vx(best-buy) then click search
4rd A window comes up and asks the OS.

Oh how I've found these G51VX threads useful! Thanks to those who've contributed.

I purchased a recertified unit from newegg a week or so ago, with intentions to upgrade the HD & processor and have a decent gaming laptop to last a little while. I received it early this week.

    Two questions:

1.) My laptop(G51VX-RX05) has a recertified sticker on the bottom with the Model, MB version, and serial number on it. The MB version says "G60VX". Why? Are they the same board? Was mine swapped during the recert process?

2.) Is there any other fix for the audio only playing out the headset, besides the regedit or RMA? Dang... I hate to send this thing back already. I've reloaded drivers, adjusted the BIOS audio stuff, checked the audio jack for stuck pins and switches, nada.

No extended warranty... I just have 90 days. That's good enough to cover the problems I've having now. Asus is working on a RMA as we speak.

Likely that it was sent back to asus as there was over heating problems and replaced the asus g60vx motherboard as it was cooler. i had one and it never got hotter than 78c.....thats for me with the games i used tho.

So, after talking to Asus and them deciding I'd hafta pay for the initial shipment for the RMA, I've decided to deal with the audio jack with the reg edits. On that note, how does that impact audio from HDMI & USB? Anyone know?

Also, my GPU still hits 90 degrees at times when playing games. I haven't tried anything intense like Crysis either. That's without a cooler... or any paste change. That's bone stock. As soon as it hits 90 the fan brings it back down in the 70's.

For peoples talking about the heat,

My G51VX-RX05 is almost two years old ( a year and 10 months ), I did some undervoltage on the GPU through some BIOS "modifications", but even with that + Zalmann ZM-NC2000 cooler on the bottom, I still get like 100C in the GPU while some heavy gaming!

But it still running, the laptop never presented any problem so far...I dont have freezes, BSOD or even artifacts on screen, so I dont think it will die on me any time soon. And I use it alot! I had a Toshiba and an Acer notebook before and none lasted more than a year with me, lolz!

Im so happy with it that I plan on upgrading to another Asus computer and so on =)

I guess it was designed since the beginning to support that amount of heat?

    Edit:

Ohh, and the DOX 185.85 driver link still the most stable and performance driver for me! it keeps cooler temps while idle and dont crash on HD YouTube videos like the newer nVidia Drivers!

Hey guys, i have some questions concerning the 2nd HDD + 9-cell battery for the G51.

Since the original post isn't fully updated, the links are broken. Can anyone refer me to a link for a 9-cell battery compatible with the laptop? Also, I really don't have much tech knowledge, but I have an extra SSD and I want to use it as a secondary HDD. Do I need to purchase anything? Or will I be able to just put it in the laptop?

    Thanks guys!

I bought my comp a couple of years ago at frys, I'm sure this has been ask before back through the 100 of pages somewhere, but can I raid the hdds in my comp? I was looking at the 2x wd black 750gb. I heard it is really fast raiding 2 hdd? I have never "raided" a hdd. Is it as fast as an ssd? Or should I just get an ssd and move my og hdd over to the second compartment? TIA.

I installed the G.Skill Pheonix Pro 60Gb version, and couldn't be happier. It's been an awesome drive thus far... and extremely fast. I'm not sure how it compares to RAID in speed, but the simplicity/stability of the setup made it more appealing to me.

    Good luck!

The speed of two 7200RPM HDD in RAID-0 with this machine is in my signature, so yah, you can do it... :) BUT, SSD is a lot faster imo...

The G51 doesnt support raid (to what i remember), so the best course would be to add an ssd and move the 750gb for storage. If you dont want to spend to much, one of the best ssds for sata II atm is the Samsung 470 64GB (up to 250MB/s reads and 170MB/s writes).

You have to go into the intel storage management or whatever it is just past the bios boot and format the drives as a raid partition. Been awhile since I have done it on either model. But you have to format and reinstall one way or the other.

Dont forget if you still have the recovery partition this would be wiped as well.

    Hello.

What version of HDMI has got this notebook ? Is it HDMI 1.0 , HDMI 1.2 or HDMI 1.3 ?

I have got G51VX-RX05 with GTX 260m and I want to know if I can buy 3D TV and connect it to my notebook through HDMI cable to get 3D picture on TV ( after buying emiter and glasses of course ).

The reason why I asked this question was that the model G51J-iX098V is able to show 3D content. But maybe they put something different inside this notebook, like newer HDMI output.

This is going to sound like a stupid question but... I just formatted my G51Vx to start off fresh. After finishing reinstalling Windows 7 I realized that none the buttons on the top row function correctly. My sound buttons no longer work and the three heat sensitive buttons no longer work. What do I need to get these working again? Any help is greatly appreciated.

It's actually the ATK hotkey software, available here once you pick your OS flavour...

Good thread on ASUS bloatware located here that is definitley worth reading ( bearing in mind the dates)...

i know this thread is (for the most part) dead but it is the first one i hit a while back and it helped me immensely in picking a g51. just wanted to share the fruits of my modding over the past year or so:

first, i can confirm that this laptop can take a full-hd 1920x1080 screen upgrade! Performance sees no significant drops, although by the time i did the swap i had a t9550 in the laptop (currently have a t9900 8gb ext ext), so with stock specs it might take more of a hit idk. anyway, what you need is a AUO B156HW01 V3 (matte) or AUO B156HW01 V5 (glossy) 15.6" LCD. thats the actual model number of the LCD; as this LCD was used in everything from Dells to our Asus's, ebay and amazon should find all kinds of hits if you do a search for either model. i have installed both the v3 and v5 (started with a v5 glossy but switched to a v3 matte to reduce screen glare) so can confirm they both work. watch out for 'Rossmann supply' when buying; i sent 2 back to him through Amazon and another one through eBay! all had smudges and stuck pixles. try to find a listing thats 'A+' or states 'no dead pixels' when buying. cost jumps around a lot, but for either model expect to pay $130-170 including shipping.

second, an alternative to the infamous 'cooling mod' that requires you to cut/drill the bottom panel; i bought a bottom panel for a g60jx, the model without the fake vent on the bottom, and it fits perfectly on the g51vx (or any g50/51/60 models) and adds more airspace inside the case plus additional vents near the fan. i found this more desirable as it doesn't cut airflow throughout the rest of the case like the cooling mod does, frying your HD RAM and other sudo-passive cooled parts, and it looks better than the original panel with the ring imo. be aware that if you do this you need to also get new rubber feet for your g51 (or g50 ext)! the g60jx used taller feet to make enough room under the laptop for the new bottom panel design, i found this advantages as well as it helps prevent your laptop from 'heat-sealing' on the surface its sitting on. usually you have to buy a bottom case to get the feet, but they are cheap on eBay ($19ish for the bottom half of the case, $19-30 for the panel). try to find a complete bottom with the panel, will usually be cheaper than buying separate.

the last thing i would like to mention, in the off chance that sunny see's fit to add some of this info to the initial post for ppl to find, is that yes Kansas, these can take 8GB of DDR2 pc2-6400. if there was ever any question about that in your mind, dismiss it.

oh, and the reason the GPU overheats in these is the heatsink surface doesnt sit flush with the 260m; a tab hits the metal square around the actual chip on the card and props up one end. i took a file to said tab on mine and made a notch in it so it sits flush, but adding a copper shim will fix this too (10-15c drops). not sure how everyone here missed that lol
