An update to my guide guys.

I've added BIOS editing and flashing to it but there is a little bit more that needs to be added. Will probably finish up by noon.

Much thanks for your guide Tevash.

I'm still deciding if I should get the G51vx a1 now or wait a month or so to see how the G60 looks.

My question is, would the guide also apply to the G60 as well? They seem to be similar machines. Thanks.

This wait is killing me! :D

They should mostly be the same.

The Clock Generator for SetFSB would probably be different and the GPU vBIOS may be different too but other than that, there shouldn't be any difference.

I'd just like to say I don't get outrageous temperatures from my laptop, and I have a 25% cpu overclock, and overclocked the GPU. The GPU when in crysis hits 90-91 max, the cpu never goes over 67cs with an overclock and no cooling pad. However, I found the best way to get air flow to this laptop was to just use a small book old game case, etc and prop it up at a slight tilt, this dropped my temperatures 10-15cs just by doing this. HEre's a screenshot as well, for those of you who don't believe my temps, this is after coming off a gaming session from oblivion (Which for some odd reasons I don't get nearly as great FPS as I do in Crysis.. Hit 40-50 FPS on high on Crysis.. Must be the mods.)

get the G51Vx-A1, i just ordered it from zipzoomfly, total 1244USD with all bing/rebates included. its a steal. The G60 is nothing special, im sure if you skip out on this deal and wait for it to release, then you will really admire those 0.4" extra size screen, in addition to prolly costing near 2000USD.

Edit: The gpu does get hot when playing crysis though.

Also forge, is that an Esata raid or did you somehow put another HDD in the G51? Here's updated screenie, as you can see GPU is a hot mofo, but the rest stays relatively cool.. Without cooling pad as well. I'm not trying to sound like an , I sometimes come off like that online though so Don't take it the wrong way if you did.

I didn't think you were. Just a joke, sort of like when someone made a funny remark about David's benchmark picture that had his CPU with -1% activity.

Anyway, I actually put a new hard drive (WD 320GB @ 7200 rpm). I'm not using RAID (I don't feel comfortable with it, plus the WD drive isn't the same as the stock drive), I just have two HDDs. Stock is for OS and various programs and documents and stuff, while the new one is for games and media.

I have this particular machine and I am having trouble running GTA IV without the game freezing, I have tried different graphics settings, toying with the Nvidia GTX 260M settings, but nothing seems to work. I get a good 5-10 minutes of gameplay, sometimes less and then the screen goes black and/or it freezes and I have to reboot manually.

All my drivers are up to date, I don't overclock my system at all since I don't know anything about it.

Please help me with this gaming laptop so that I can play GTA IV.

Have you gotten the patches? GTA IV had ton of problems when first released.

What are your temps after a signle run of 3DMark06? Use HWMonitor and give me your max temps

That's after 3 hours of Crysis, I only hit 75-76cs in other games. I just did that to give a really good rough ride for the CPU, to see my max temp (Not to mention killing some commies in the process ;p) But yeah, that's not a normal temp, nor one I'm at for very long. I may peak there during explosions or something, but that's probably not there longer than a couple seconds.

Then its probably due to not getting patches.....If you actually do have the most up to date ones, then there may be something of concern since the G51 should run it without any problems at all.

Has anybody been able to install the new Nvidia stock mobile drivers on this thing? it says that it natively supports the 260M, but even after removing the Dox drivers and running driver sweeper, it says it can't find a supported chipset. Thoughts?

haha happy to help ya here altho its gonna be 64USD more, 1308USD for it. Here the breakdown...

the unit cost when i bought it was 1680USD. With bing.com cashback, its 20% off, meaning 336USD. With ASUS mail-in-rebate 100USD. The total is 1244USD.

Now the price for the unit is 1760USD, presumably happening rite after i bought my laptop. lol coicidence??? anyways its 1760 x 0.8 (bing.com cashback) - 100USD = 1308USD. Great deal for a great laptop.

bought all on zipzoomfly altho i mite be experiencing some difficulty. They asked for my dad's SSN (social security #) and my dad said you cant hand it out to anyone cuz its very important. I will get an email back from them concerning this matter tho.

Hey guys been following the thread since page 86 and purchased around the time of page 100! (BB)

I know theres a guide to the video drivers install but what would you guys as a owner's group suggest? Update them via nvidia? Video2go?
I'm just a tad but unsure as to where to go about getting these drivers since it's my first laptop gfx driver update... I know there can be issues with the .inf files I believe, and keyboard/media related stuff.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.
I don't wanna error on this nice, brand new setup.

    More, specifically Dox 185.85

Like Forge said, just look in my guide for instructions

The G51's motherboard is probably too new and Nvidia hasn't supported it on their official drivers yet. Just stick with the ones from laptopvideo2go for now

Now, I know the architecture of this laptop isn't the greatest as far as preventing heat and all, but how much of a heat issue does the Dox drivers present? I want to know even if the drivers contribute to just a little of the heat...

With stock, out-of-box configuration, I got a 3DMark score of 8500 with a max GPU temperature of 83C.

    With Dox's 185.85 drivers, I got 8855 with a maximum temperature of 82C.

so i'm still deciding whether or not i should get a cooler or not. if i were to buy one, i'd want to get the zalman nc2000, rather than settle with something cheaper that may not have much, if any, results. but it seems like everybody gets different results anyway, so i don't know. like, it was suggested that i prop my laptop up in the back with a thick book for better airflow. people were seeing decent temperature drops. I, however, saw none. My max temperature when playing games rarely exceeds 87c, but is also barely ever any lower. As long as I'm not playing a very old game, my temperature always seems to be around 87c. That's a safe temperature for sure.... but, if i continue gaming at these temps, will the lifespan of the laptop decrease? i'll definitely get a cooler if i can increase its lifespan by a decent amount. I want it to at least last the 4 years through college.

Well they are technically supposed to increase temps but most people with G51s have seen little to no differences in temps with Dox drivers at all.

Well.....Asus tells us these temps are fine but we will never actually know until two years down the line when issues may actually start occurring en masse

I wish I just had that, most of the time my laptop goes very late 90's or even the hundreds, for playing a game like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. which isn't exactly too graphic intensive.

On the other note, I'm a little depressed that I can't put a quad-core in this computer cause I wanted this bad boy to last for a long time personally (but with these heat issues, I don't even think my GPU will last terribly too long).
I'm still having some hope however that I can put a quad in here someday...

I've noticed the GPU has been getting hotter the more I use the laptop, I doubt the temps will effect it.. My old laptop (Had an IGP) would idle at around 90cs, and it's been running for 2 years.. Even runs after the fan broke on it. If an IGP can handle 90cs+++ I doubt the 260m is going to be crippled by high 80s temps. If it's hot in your house like mine, I really recommend atleast propping your laptop, it may only give you a small air flow benefit, but at the very least keeps my laptop 5cs cooler across the board, (10-15cs difference when playing crysis or other GPU intensive games.)

Hey man welcome to the forums!

I guess you can check out Tev's Optimization Guide if you really want to tweak your laptop to its full potential.

That and maybe download the latest drivers from nVidia for your laptop. Here is the place for 186.31.

    Good luck to ya

If anyone is interested, there seems to be a decent Asus G51 review here

    Edit:

    Bah.....double post

    Edit 2:

Hmm.....they apparently found that the battery last 107 minutes under heavy CPU and GPU load which is actually very decent......

Brian> everyone is running 90c temps when gaming on intense games it seems from forums ive been a part of- this is high without a doubt. However, is it normal for the GPU?
Brian> mine maxes at 90c and that is when the fan kicks in high - meaning the computer doesnt seem worried about it at all on 88c... until it hits 90c really. Im just worried that at such a high temp the GPU will have a shortened lifespan.
NBTSD-Rodel01> The maximum threshold for the GPU is about 120 therefore, running at 90 degrees is OK.
    Brian> will lifespan be reduced
    NBTSD-Rodel01> No.
NBTSD-Rodel01> As long as the fan is working properly

live support (for all they know) claims 90c is not even nearly something to worry about. Just lettin ya all know.

I just got this a few days ago, and I love it. The only game I could get to really test it out was Half Life 2, and it did brilliantly, with everything maxed out.

As far as overheating, as long as you keep the side fan clear, I don't see any problems...

The only issue i've had with it has been with the wireless adapter, which would only connect to my router in 'local only' mode. After finding new drivers that windows could not find on the Intel site, my problem was solved.

It's a great laptop for the price.

A few things really sold me on it, over any other make at Best Buy:

Not a lot of bloatware (some geeksquad thing, some ASUS security programs and updaters) that were easily uninstalled.

Backlit Keyboard... with a num pad..

    Facial recognition? awesome.

And ASUS and Dell (according to the sales rep) were the only companies that offer a recovery disk and driver disc in the box. HP and the others made you rely on the recovery partition.

The only thing this laptop doesn't have is bluetooth. Which... isn't that big of a loss.
