You did a driver sweep and used drivers that list the 260M as supported and it still wont work?

skyhawk21 - I am going to look into cooling solutions.. Dont know why asus block off the intake from the lid...
ClutchX2 - Haven't done that yet but i will. -

using stock software for now with vista sp1 64bit on system the way it came, tweaked it a little! i only have run benchmarks for the durations built in and crysis playing for 10 minutes which got up to 97c
and then built in crysis benchmarks in dx10 mode and currently running it in dx9 mode with settings on high max res, and getting avergae 30 fps or more butter smooth! temps high
no artifacts present in crysis at all or futuremark benchmarks, have not played anything for longer than 10 mins though so who knows...
will post benches in dx9 mode in a bit -

Power_man - Using the Driver from nvidia's website wont work without doing some mod to the ini file.. have not tried using driver sweep but will give that a shot..
-
sunny i got already home made modded inf if you want it for the 185.85 whql driver for mobile chipset gpu, i didnt try the very new ones becuz there are two sets of entrys for two different versions of driver set in .inf file of the newest whql mobile drivers kinda confusing, the older ones had one section to modify!
-
hmm.. upload it if you can to rapidshare or something and share the link.. Did you experience any difference with the new updated drivers?
-

Did either of you try DOX 185.85? I never looked at the support list but either way you should driver sweep first. Dox tends to be hotter ofcourse but the 185.85 are note book driver based so not any hotter that I have noticed. I would just figure if it does support 260M he might have covered this issue for some notebooks.
I know his next driver has mad neat options for install coming but he is on vacation with family. -
DX9 MODE:
IM using 185.85 whql nvidia mobile drivers with a custom modded .inf file i did myself..
here are the crysis benchmarks using crysis 32bit, ver. 1.21 DX( mode 1366x768 res everything high with blood enabled, NO AA, using crysis built in benchmark .bat files..
Crysis Bench Cpu 1:
Crysis Bench Cpu 2:
Crysis Bench Gpu:
Using Vista 64bit with SP1 and all fresh updates, DX9/DX10 march 2009 updates crysis ver 1.21 32bit mode with dx9 the game is smooth as butter at full res laptop can put out!
will be trying later DMC4 benchmark and gta4 and all my games off of steam! -
RainMotorsports Formerly ClutchX2
Dont even bother benching DMC4 lmao. If your not geting over 60 fps there is something seriously wrong. 179.14 on the G50 ran high framerates and dox 185.85 ran into the three digit mark. Got about 55 fps in 1920 x 1080 when i turned the AA from 16x to 8x.
Devil May Cry 4 doesnt take real advantage of DX10 nor does it consume anywhere near the power of most games. Its an arcade game that takes forever to play.
There also should be no difference between the 9800M GS and the GTX 260M in GTA4 until you get your quad lol. Play your other steam games. -
DOX drivers suck because by default when you use his installer and install, it tweaks the install for gpu driver right away and you cant modify the tweaks and he uses all the optimazations you can for nvidia driver making it lower IQ quality and theres alot of bugs in vista 64, like with FSX 10 you cant select any other resolutions although they are present using dox drivers, using whql they are fine..
ill get ya link in a bit for the 185.85 whql mobile
i got a 3dmark06 score of 8890 or so i think over the 8836 with old drivers, installed physx by default and its enabled..
my 3dmark03 score went from 28543 using the 179.53 stock driver with laptop to 29117 using 185.85 whql mobile driver.
playing crysis in dx9 32 bit mode high settings full res no aa i get average of 30-35 fps playing the game NO LAG keyboard, built in mouse and on screen
using crysis in DX10 mode 32bit high settings full res no aa average was from 25-30fps and there is some graphic lags and hiccups here and there! -
wow after all this i hope that the g71 is better
and i hope that this heating problem go away -
RainMotorsports Formerly ClutchX2
Heh on the G50 the Dox driver opens up a bunch of resolutions I didnt have before. Half of them are useless a couple common and good ones in there.
Devil may cry 4 is weird about resolutions, but unlike what people said i had no issues getting it to over 720p when connected to the external, however it would not do 1366x768 on either driver.
I need to grab FSX 10, only game I have had any actual issues with so far and driver didnt really matter is Crysis Warhead doesnt like to properly change and hold resolutions.
Keep em coming guys, sadly will be skipping this one but obviously without a processor upgrade its not for me, someone wanna buy a G50vt-x5 lol. -
Great review, I've been watching this laptop for a while now. I think I may get it. But if there is a heat problem with it stock, and I wanted to put in a quad core.. I dont know if I would get it.
-
well as like with my pc, i have a EVGA 9800GTX+ SC had a wolfdale e7200 cpu overclocked to 400fsb 3.2ghz on the cpu and ram running at ddr2 800 1:1 ratio and got good scores at 1920x1080 res with my 23" screen but gpu was bottlenecked from cpu.. BOUGHT a q9400 quad cpu overclocked it to same fsb as other cpu and settings so its at 3.2ghz times 4 cpus and my dam gpu benchmarks were off the charts..
the g51 has a weak cpu at 2.0ghz
im pretty sure if u get that quad 2.0ghz cpu with 12megs of cache i think over the 3meg cache of stock cpu the gpu would not be bottlenecked and alot dam higher scores that will outdo alot of the older generation gamer notebooks even with them overclocked to the max! 200buxs! upgrade and wala best gaming notebook maybe? -

lol.. Yea i guess they had a lot left over that no one was buying.. Now we are stuck with it on a laptop that can do so much better..
-
RainMotorsports Formerly ClutchX2
-
Which is what i may eventually do.. I am highly considering the $200 upgrade for the Q9100 and then run some tests.. Just gotta gather up some money..

Although I'm happy with my G50Vt, I somewhat feel jealous of your G51 . I would like to have a keyboard with back-light. It would make G50Vt even more colorful. Does your bestbuy version have Bluetooth? Bestbuy G50Vt-X1 and X5 look really great (especially X5 with 9-cell battery), but they don't have Bluetooth.
-
Don't think they will have bluetooth.. Maybe just one of the G71 model with bluray but don't know about bluetooth.. i just use the bluetooth dongle for that..
-
i dont think that it has BT... but i just use BT for my phone and thats it but i still prefer to sync with cables cuz it charges the phone too
-
Hey Clutch is that the same GPU heatsink you have on your machine ?.
-
RainMotorsports Formerly ClutchX2
-
Just for Kicks and giggles.. CPU overclocked at 2.4ghz!!! Does Setfsb only overclock one core and not the other? Or do i have the wrong pll.. ? I am still using the stock driver and not the newer one.. I'll get around that soon once i get the file.

I still want one though lol but the temps have me scratching my head. -
-
Well Asus themselves has announced a G51 with the q9000 and the q9100 so i don't see why i cant do it.. Unless they have a better cooling system in those models, guess time will tell..
-
Ya the CPU heatsink atleast on this model does look rather tiny and they could very well have another for the Quadcore models. Strange that they underclocked the 260m though(although after seeing the temps i kinda see why) , this card has so much potential since its a 9800gtx rebranded and is one very powerful card. .
-
Is there a tool to overclock the gpu? i tried ntune but the laptop crashes one i open that up.. I prolly wont get around overclocking the gpu once i can cool it down better..
-
@sunnyc90 see with your cpu overclocked, the gpu is not so bottlenecked anymore... that faster the cpu and or more cores the less bottlenecked that gpu will be and we will get some way high scores, we need a highspeed quad to throw in and a good cooler for it somehow..
-
Download Ntune 6.03(google it ) that one wont crash.
-
ntune 6.05 system util only
and newer video card drivers, havent tried it myself yet but that is what i needed to overclock 9600m gt on hp laptop -
-
You may want to play something like crysis for awhile and mid game ALT-tab back to your desktop then reset HW monitor and see if the temp is staying at 90+ degrees or if its just hitting that temp then the fans are finally coming into play and its cooling the card properly . Macbooks do something similar where the fans come very late to the party then go full blast .

theres modded .inf file make sure it goes under c:\nvidia\winvista64\185.85\is\display\
download 185.85 whql mobile from nvidia.com and run setup it will extract files into those folders up there and try to find yer vid card right away which it will say it cant then cancel, copy the modded .inf file..
this is how i installed:
uninstall all nvidia display stuff from windows vista program removal
reboot
let system fully get into vista desktop
run driver sweeper 1.5.5 from guru3d.com
select nvidia display and analyze and clean
do it twice just for good measures
reboot again
then run nvidia installer with the modded. inf file and wala u got newer drivers! -
Tried eVGA's precision for overclocking the GPU? You'll need a relatively new nVidia driver, though. Modded *.inf, then, if the regular mobile versions from nVidia don't work.
I only mention because, IMO, isn't nTune a bit dated?

Just want to say, keep it coming guys!
I feel like im reading a book... 103 pages down... who knows how many more!
i dont know much, but i dont like how everyone is worried about the temps.. is it potentially something that can harm the laptop? how could a quality brand like Asus set up a new laptop that runs like that right off the bat? *scratches head* -
Yeah i dont think your alone scratching your head over the GPU temps but i guess until a few more people get the machine we wont know for certain if its an isolated thing or its just the machine the way it is.

This is a different story in a quad killer like GTA 4 or a Dual Killer like World in COnflict where the the CPU is actually holding back framerates. 3dmark06's framerates arent whats changing the cpu score from the 2 cpu tests is.
I still want a 1280x1024 score lol, my 9713 is, I am too lazy to rebench in yalls res right now. -
For those of you who have followed Asus much in the past (such as the G50's release), how long does it usually take before they start releasing more models with higher-end hardware? I'm hoping to get a G51 with a quicker CPU by the the end of summer vacation.

Also for swapping the G50 keyboard with the G51, I have a doubt about it being possible, because there must be an extra power connector for the backlight. I couldn't make it out in the pics on page 1. -
