I heard this computer doesn't have a built in microphone. Any truth to that?

Just picked this up for my Son's 11th birthday. Got it at $999.00...Wow, what a great notebook.

To answer the above question, it DOES have a microphone. Why would a notebook with a webcam not have a mic? It's built right in to the right of the camera.

My son has been developing games since he was 9 years old and he is advancing at a rapid pace and needed the extra hardware for his game development. He seems happy enough with the purchase.

The heat is not to bad until you really get into some heavy lifting with the 260 like in crysis. This notebook handles the game quite easily with all settings maxed out.

hey nbr guys, I have a really important question.

So I've been playing games on this g51 for a week now, and the performance is solid, except in tf2 firefights and things like that. I know this is because of the weak processor.

Anyways, when I bought this machine I bought a 2 year accidental warranty from BB.

IF I "accidentally" break the screen after a year, will BB give me one of their current models at the same 1k price point? Is it safe to attempt this???

Hey Clutch, do u see a big or at least noticeable difference between your LcD and G51's LED? (I assume u saw it at bb), color/contrast/brightness?>

just out of curiosity, if a laptop's spec is really good but lcd screen vs one that is slightly slower but has LED screen, both same price, which one would u pick?

Not trying to be mean but remember they are both LCD, one is CCFL backlit the other is LED Backlit the screen itself isnt led. The advantages to LED are (or can be) thinner screen, less power consumption, increased brightness and better overall color.

If i was gaming and on a tight budget I would go for the more powerful machine. If i was more into multimedia, photo editing, graphic design i would go for the screen. I can not recommend anyone editing photos on the G50 screens, though the 1680x1050 is a better screen if your going to. The best buy screens while there are two models the one I have its obvious i would edit it on this screen and then it would look totally different on a calibrated and actually decent monitor.

I wonder why an OC'd G51 can get very close to 11k for 3dMark06 while the highest I saw with the G71 is only 10.8k for the same 1280x720 resolution (see the Asus G71 thread) given the difference in CPU (2.0 vs 2.53 config) and RAM (4 vs 6) with the same drivers (I think)..

@ masters.. i wouldnt go for it. they're more likely than not to at least "look" to see what you did to your screen. if they see a large bullethole in it, you're out of luck. ._.

sry to ask this kind of question. Is GTX260M stronger than 9800M gs/gt? i saw the screen from sunny and other's G50vt-X1/X5, the GPU clock rate is higher, filter rate also higher then GTX260M, y? can anybody explain this

    GTX m 260 has 112 stream processor
    9800M GS/GT has 64 stream processor

    GTX M 260 is better.

For example, there are lots of OVERCLOCKED, SUPERcLOcKED desktop 9800GT, 9400GT superlcocked GTS 250 all have crazy faster clock rate than my desktop GTX 260, but my GTx 260 kills them all because of the structure and number of stream processors.

Same goes for processor, a Pentium 4 or duo core that's overclocked to 3.6 ghz or 4 ghz is still weaker than Penryn core 2 duo at much slower speed because of structure.

The 260M is definitely a step up from the 9800M GS/GT, having almost twice the shaders. Though, it's nothing revolutionary. They're all great video cards with good capabilities.

What you planning to smash your laptop to get a new 1 after a year?
If you bought the warranty I'm sure it comes with some sort of rules and regulations manual.
Never got a "accidental" warranty for full details, but I think you are on the right track.
And NO do not attempt it unless you now the full details..lol

Ok well thanks for answering the question.

The BB policy says they will replace the product if it "receives four qualified repairs," including "defects in materials and failures due to dust, heat and humidity," as well as "accidental damage from handling" (dropping/spilling).

Actually this happened to me too and im surprised that more people arent reporting the same issue. what i did was uninstall my stock drivers and it came up with the standard vga display like yours did. I dont know if there is a better way to do it, but to fix that i just did a recent system restore to get my stock drivers back.

However that did not fix the update program, so i called asus technical support and they advised me to download the graphics driver update for the **G60** series of laptops. After repeatedly telling them that this was a g51 model he said that based on the serial number that i gave them it was a g60 model...whatever. So i downloaded it, restarted blah blah.

Now I dont know if that actually fixed it but just downloaded Dox's 185.85 drivers for 64 bit vista, selected single gpu under install options and it worked..

If i were you i would first try to install the dox drivers and if that doesnt work then do the ASUS thing.. try that. Just google Dox drivers 185.85 and youll find them. Let me know if that works.

well the thing is I didnt or dont remember uninstalling drivers. I guess I did. I just did a clean wipe of vista for win 7 RC. I just dont have any gpu detected or no aero theme.

    I tried Dox's 185.85 but no work.

still says generic vga whatever. not the nvidia card like usual

    EDIT:::

    it works :)))
well so far. i was wondering that Dox driver how is it compared to the most recent nvidia driver? which is better. and it said something about enabling Physx?

You have to copy the inf file into setup files and then run the setup.exe .
At this time, the driver will know GTX 260M as 170M. Everything will work well ,but I can't change the brightness by using Fn+F5/F6 after i installed 186.03 with modded inf.

Anyone have a problem where the fan runs full blast constantly? Even when the machine is cool and I'm on battery saver, the fan is blowing cold air out of the side.

EDIT: Answered my own question. Looks like it's an issue with WHS Connector waking up the laptop to run the backup. The fan then doesn't turn off until you reboot.

Dox's drivers are hand-down faster and cleaner than official drivers. They run a bit hotter, and from what I read some synthetic benchmarks might suffer, but in the real world they rock.

Here is something I posted a few days back, see what is in bold.....

"Also anyone else notice that on the BB G51 model on their standard flash screen which shows the hardware info of the computer "CPU, RAM, HDD, Wireless, GPU etc. it identifies the laptop as a G60Vx"

EDIT _ Also if you look at your G51 Asus box tag you will see under Item # As G51Vx XXXXX then the second line is G60Vx XXXXXx (i.e. different) the same tag on a G71 says "As G71Vx then second line G71x" (i.e. the same)

This happens a lot when you change a windows.. happen to lots of computer when it change from Xp to vista. mainly cause the driver for those touchpad are designed for one windows and not compatible with another. Its my best GUESS that you will have to wait till after windows 7 release and asus will put out a driver patch/update for the touchpad cause there aer lots of laptop sold now that wil fall into that update category and they will take care of it then. Until then u r probably out of luck.

THis happens to HP and Lenovo user now who use windows 7, they are all waiting until windows 7 come out for manufacture to release official driver

Just wondering.....do the majority of the people here have the ability to OC their processor up to 2.5Ghz?

I get basically instant BSODs at 2.5 and its unstable during stress tests at 2.4. I think 2.3 might be okay for me....

Edit: Should you be using Orthos for stressing and testing for stability?

What's with all the video card update? does original driver not run well?

I'm thinking next batch of official nvidia driver should work..cause G51 came out after the official nvidia driver release...so might not have been included in the compatibility list.
