it's the on-screen display. there is no downside, it will just show up as the icon in the top left instead of the big image in the middle of the screen. it may be listed under atk. i'll let you know what it is listed as for my g1s, maybe it's the same for the g51 (anyone want to confirm/disprove this?)

I would never suggest a gaming laptop for school. Battery life, portability, and price are the most important thing to a student and a gaming laptop does not fit any of those needs. You are better off with a netbook (or used/very cheap notebook) and as much gaming desktop as you can afford instead.

Netboks are good when it coms to portability and battery life, but I can't stand how long everything loads, the screen is so small and most important of all, it's horrible to type on. - Thats my opinion.

For school a Lenovo/ IBM ThinkPad is a good choice - good batt. life, -great keyboard etc...

hey guys, I got this laptop yesterday, love it so far but I want to upgrade the CPU..
Sunny mentioned the Q9100 quad core, which seems to be the fastest Quad core in the 1066mhz FSB area, does this mean we couldn't upgrade to Q9300 (1333 MHz FSB)?

And what would actually use the quad cpu's these days? not many games I would imagine..

    U mean the QX9300? Q9300 is a dektop CPU.
FSB does not really affect the performance, a 1066MHz is perfectly fine. The best quad u could put it the QX9300, but we don;t know if the BIOS supports it..

Depend on which school, I have same concern as you that's why I havent bought yet. But at my school, there's electric outlet pretty much at every corner, aside from the inconvenience of a power brick, having an outlet is not a problem. The size is a bit inconvenient to carry around though, but if you don't mind that, knock yourself out.

samrozzi, the process as it should show up in task manager is "atkosd2.exe" however you are right, it doesn't show up in control panel. i am unsure how to uninstall it other than by reinstalling windows

Reporting from Asus site, they are releasing new bios for the laptop to deal with the heating issue. No specified release date though.

Actually, a date has indeed been given by ASUS thanks to their Facebook page! :D

    http://www.facebook.com/ASUSOfficialPage?v=info#/ASUSOfficialPage?v=wall&viewas=580128125

"ASUS Official Page : FYI to any G51 G71 owners from Best Buy, a new BIOS will be released 7/3/09 ill post a link once released"

I know it doesn't sound like something formal from ASUS but that's just how they do their announcements on facebook haha. Is it definitely in regards to the heat issue though?

Yes, check back on asus web site or facebook page tomorrow, they should post a link with instruction on how to install or the lingo is FLASH the bios. Painless, easy to do.

Just got home with my G51 in possession!

    Oh wow :p

This might end up making me regret ordering a Sager NP8662...

Reason i avoided the G51 was cause the GPU heating issue..

Oh well, I am still gonna ooze over my 8662! :)

Does anyone who where (if any) is there a USB header on the mainboard? I'm thinking about putting bluetooth and a Microsoft wireless controller receiver in in the extra HDD bay but I was hoping to avoid desoldering an existing USB port to do it.

Maybe if youre comparing it to the Asus G51 and G71, but note that the laptop I linked is the Clevo M860TU, which runs cooler. Also note, that the GTX 260m can be OCed as well. Im pretty sure that your 9800mGS is at, or very near its overclocking limit. And the same with your P8600. That said, that Clevo matches yours at stock. I wonder how far it would go OCed. :p

I'm comparing to G51.Clevo don't matches my score at stock at all in real gaming, 3DMark is nothing. My GPU have more potencial but I don't wont to push harder.

I really like the way your g50 is oCed can you make a guide on how to overclock it because there are alot of people out there just searching for a good way to OC there G50's and I have seen alot of OCed g50s but not like yours , I think yours is the best right now

    Thanks!

SetFSB, PLL is ICS9LPR604AGLF, thats the entire extent of the guide.

JacobXavierMason has the best FSB overclock I have seen from 266 to 347 mhz which would push a P7450 to over 2.7 and a T9600 to 3.64. It mainly depends on the ram in the computer all the G50's have different ram by the date it was made myne happens to suck, getting 306 on the bus T9600 is at 3.22 Ghz stable.

Jacob's is beyond Tavara's and on stock ram. We cant adjust our ram voltage except maybe through SPDtool which wouldnt even read on my G50 so its either the motherboard or the cruddy samsung ram, though SPDtool's leatest supported chipset is the 35 series and we use a PM45. Im getting some new enthusiast ram to try and push myne to 333 or farther fsb.

Bios update for what? The bios update for the G71 is avaliable from a similarly named thread in the ASUS section of this site.

I wasnt aware the G51 needed a bios update?

Well the G71 bios update is out, its on their servers and it was sent to atleast one G71 owner. Its apparently not showing for everyone on live but i assume it just means they ran into something and are delaying it.

You wouldnt want a bios update that kills the computer and makes you send it in now do you? lol i wonder what they are changing on the G51, maybe they found something similar when fixing the G71. Though i dont know of any software related issues on the G51 nor does the G71's issue affect the G51.

well their are a few reports of over heating and the GPU bottlenecking, not nearly as bad as g71.

but with the update hopefully a better ability to OC CPU? idk really, but any update thats an improvement is something I want.

The G51 has no limitations in overclocking over the G50, it just doesnt have a built in application for it and probably never will. Outside of a new bios issue that may have come up in the writing of the G51 bios there is nothing that can be fixed by software to make it any better

If your running into limits like me (G50 overclocks 10% stock, myne gets around 17% but seen 25% from other users) its usually the shoddy ram.

As i said if they found something in common with the G71 while fixing its problem they could have fixed it as a preventative measure. They may also have run into an issue with a reseller version of the laptop (say with the quads) and fixed it.

Everyones looking for other fixes right now for the G51 so theyll be happy to take anything even if its useless. OR it could be something harmful to performance to reduce heat. Alienwares latest M17 bios actually removes overclocking lol.

Between the 50VT X1 and 51 RXO5 there is a big difference in cpu though not a big enough one to be important (260 mhz). The G51's video card is a good improvement but runs hotter.

Overall assuming the G51's heat turns out to not be a big problem, or a fixable problem (those with paste done wrong and mis aligned heatpipes). The G51 is a more powerful unit though the current base models cpu is weak. You can upgrade the cpu in either model but the video card in the G51 is the best.

G51 has other nice things like the backlit chiclet keyboard that make it worthy of purchase for some users.
