There are probably others who sell it individually as well as in the system, MileStonePC for instance does for $77. Since its a VBI component, even though the program isn't as big as it was intended to be there should be a bunch of places selling it. Since it is a VBI component as well you should get the 2 year Intel warranty whether you buy it with the system or not.

I can't believe after all that I've done with my laptop I just found out it had an Expresscard slot ;) I was looking around the machine, and saw the port ... the plastic place holder, pressed on it and pulled it out and I'm like, What's this?!

I'm sorry to say I didn't even know about expresscards. at least not for a notebook slot, and had to look up that form factor ;)

It just gets better and better!

Yes, I am looking to buy a eSATA card for it so I can plug in an external HDD and run at the same speed as my 100 GB onboard HDD :)

    It's reeeeeeally expensive though...

Looks to be about ~$70 for a good expresscard and ~$150 for an external HDD+case with eSATA connector.

Unfortunately there is not much Expresscard Support out there yet. I really do not understand why more manufacturers are not making expresscard devices. I believe that the mac notebooks have been expresscard only for quite a while. People are still making only PCMPCI.

I would really like to have a CF memory card adapter. There is only one available and it is $60! I also would like to have a Soundblaster Expresscard. I have a N draft wireless network at home and Belkin only makes a PCMPCI notebook card (so I'm limited to only G).

I think it is nice to have Expresscard slot I just wish they would get some more cards (and cheaper). At this point in time I would probably prefer having a PCMPCI slot...

For all of you (or maybe just me), that had the issue with the Computer not returning from Standby..here ya go..

    http://www.intel.com/cd/channel/reseller/emea/eng/318030.htm#11

    So it's milestonepc's fault :p

Gotta get a hold of em, or better yet, if one of you guys from milestone is around, if you could post and see if you can answer the question...that is ofcourse if the memory can be replaced...

As small as the standby function seems, when you're a student, it can be real important, running between classes e.t.c

Yes. Open task manager and end the process named "ATKOSD". This will get rid of the little box, so you can continue working, but the box will not come back until the next time you boot/reboot windows. Your other option is to just restart the computer.

Try the latest driver(.58) and see if that fixes your issue, if you haven't already done so,

    Hello everybody!

I'm from Hungary, so please forgive me my mistakes.
I want to buy a notebook for AutoCAD and 3DCad. I've read the S96J review here on NotebookReview.com, and i've decided to buy an S96J. I have a question about the heat, that the notebook produces, and a gaming one. I think that the 49-53C temperature during browsing and document typing is real high. But the author of the review said that that is not anoying. What is the exact temperature, that you can feel during typing? Because i can't believe that your palm doesn't hurt during typing at 49-53C. What heat does it produce when gaming?
Please write me about the heat in details.
And the other (gaming) question: did anyone tried to play Splinter Cell Double Agent on this machine? And on what resolution(screen size, and options such as: aa, shadow res, etc.)?

    Thanks for reading:
    Red Boy

I haven't looked at the exact temperature during typing/browsing but I can tell you that I barely hear the fan turning on when doing so, but while gaming, I do here it but since the CPU is near the top of the keyboard, there are no heat issues for me.

As for Splinter Cell, I played that game and you can play with the setting at high but if you put everything in the custom memu at the highest settings, it will jerk a little when there are a lot of textures to render at stock clock settings. Now if you overclock, it's a little better but it will still jerk a little when it's rendering a lot,

If you are looking for a cool running notebook this is it.

I have never looked at everest but I did gaming and web browsing with one for hours the other day and it dissipates heat really well and I dont even know why.

It is reasonably large but smaller than a e1505
the perforations dont seem to actually do anything. Id say its the ati gpu but some notebooks with this same gpu are the biggest heat offenders like the macbook pro and the acer 5672
Its just really cool running. So the hungarian found what he was looking for ;thats the model.

    hello eveyone
I'm owing a Vaio FE 790 (for about a month), but i'm not really satisfied with it, so do you think i should try to sell it and get a S96J instead??
is there any comparison between the Vaio FE and Asus S96J??
by the way, if i should buy an Asus, where's the best place?
    thanks

well what is the exact stats of you sony fe and what dont you like about it?

I like the sony fes keyboard and apearance better.

The screen looks almost exactly the same to me. The s96 would play games better.

If you got the z96j you could have a higher resolution

    anyhow they are very similar

If you want some kind of improvement in games check out the g1

    here's the stats:
core 2 duo 1.83Ghz 2MB L2 cache - could be better, although that's quite enough
    1GBx1 DDR2 at 533Mhz - OK
    geforce GO 7600 128MB - i hate this
by the way, Sony's Motion Eye webcam resolution is around 320x240 - @(*$# Sony
it's fine if it just stays on the desk al day, but whenever i pick it up, it flickers everywhere possible
before i bought, i thought it should be WHITE (pretty much like a Macbook), not GRAY
is there any improvement in the S96J compared to the Vaio FE? Well, if there's not much difference in the build quality than i don't need to sell my Sony T_T, still love it though

crappyGPU, do you have PowerMeiser disabled? I read about it from my own flickering woes, that's nVidia's version of ATI's Powerplay...There was also something about dirty power, AC/DC issues, driver, bios. You can check into all those things and see if they help you with the flickering screen... - The PowerMeiser one especially (and get the latest drivers).

I'm sure this question has been answered before, but I can't seem to find it. Is there a know problem with the built in microphone on this laptop? The microphone would work off and on when I first got this laptop, but now it doesn't work at all. I've reloaded all the audio drivers twice and still nothing. Any suggestions? Other than this small problem, this really is a great computer.

It should, the Z96J has the TPM option tho I disabled it. The microphone worked fine for me, but I don't really use it much at all.

please anyone give me an advice
should i sell my Vaio FE and switch to an S96J??
i bought the FE only a month ago for $1350, no scratch, no dead pixel, in general, as good as it was out of the box, so what is a reasonable price i should offer??

i'm sorry but i dont' really get what you said
i mean, the reason i want to switch is the build quality things, components (asus offers more choices with cheaper price)
i don't see if Powermizer has anything to do with that
and about other things, i can't understand

    hi,

has anyone ever tried to open the "system properties" window, "hardware" tab, "device manager" with "view" -> "show hidden devices"?

i just noticed mine has the "non-plug and play drivers" with the "serial" option set to an exclamation point... what device is it? have i failed to install something? i used intel drivers from the intel website and my bios is version 1104.

    thanks,

In order for the Wifi light to work, you need to install the Intel WiFi drivers that either came with the CD or the downloaded ones.

Make sure you installed the ATK0100 Driver.

As well as the Wireless Driver as said above.

Ok, this is weird because supposedly the S96J/Z96J have this little chip inside that controls some form of security on the notebook.

I don't have any trace of the Infinion Security thing on my system, I do not know much about, I only heard about this chip supposedly inside the S96J/Z96J one other time, so im totally lost.

Uninstall the drivers for the webcam in add/remove and then make sure its gone from the device manager.

    Reboot.

Connect to Windows Update, there should be a driver there for you to install, select and install it. Your webcam should work after you reboot again. At least thats how I fixed mine. :)

Also, we cant see that pic there you have to host it.

when I listen to music and use headphones and I unplugged my head phones from the jack, the music should be transferred to the speaker, but this doesnt happen? I have to knock on me S96J several times below the mouse pad so that the sound would be heard from the speakers. Anyone has the same problem with me?

There have been lots of people that have had that problem, even with other models, like the F3j and A8. The best solution is to contact Asus or your reseller, as the problem is caused by a faulty switch inside of the headphone port.

How are you installing the drivers? Install the ones on the CD first using the setup.bat file first, then update with the ones on Windows Update. If that's the way you have been using it, what version of the driver are you using, 5.0.0.1?

Has anyone tried the new BIOS updates from Intel?

The fixes listed look like all the essentials:

    I'm just not sure which BIOS I should be using? 945PM1 or 945PM2 (I have a Z96J with Core2Duo)

    BIOS 1104 945PM1

    BIOS 1104 945PM2

    Cheers!

Don't RMA the laptop over that Touquet, there are many many posts on problems with those drivers and things...gotta install in the right order from the CD and the ones off the CD first.

There is already a post about the 1104 update specifically, check that.

I'm having a few problems and I was wondering if anyone can help me out.Maybe they are common problems, but this thread is 95 pages long T_T.

The webcam is a grey screen.

The number pad is auto-on! I have to hold the "Fn" key to type letters(Very anoying)

Don't know if anything can be done about this one: When the Optical drive reads a disc, its very noicy because the vibrations cause the 'door' to rattle with the casing.

I just got my s96j in the mail today. VERY exciting! lol.
    My specs are:
    Intel Core 2 Duo T7200 2.GHz, @ 4MB
    2 Gigs ram
    100Seagate 7200 RPM hd
And I guess everything else is pretty standard.
I think I should have installed all the drivers from the top down in a row after instaling the OS.... Other then that everything is cool so far.

If the webcam is displaying a grey screen, that usually means the drivers were not installed correctly, just uninstall the drivers from the add/remove programs menu, reboot and browse the cd for the drivers and run the setup.bat command from the folder and once it's done, you can go to Windows Update to get newer drivers. As for the num lock being on, that's usually a Windows issue or is the num lock on when you power it up? If it's just a windows issue, do a google search and I know there is a registry setting you can change to leave it off when it starts. As for the DVD drive, what brand are you using? Also, have you looked to see that both screws are holding the drive in place? If so, try removing the one closest to the tray because on mine that screw cause the drive to be held against the bottom, which cause the tray to scrape when I opened & closed the drive,

    Thanks man,

There were 4 camera install drivers on the cd lol. I finally managed to find the right one after contacting the company, istnc.com - great service; they got aim/msn/yahoo msgs and someone one on much all the time(at least on aim)

I have another issue thats bothering me a little. And that's keyboard 'bending'.
it's not as much the bending as much as the sound of the keyboard hitting whatever is behind it. Don't know how common this issue is, but don't think i'll be able to fix it that easy.

Maybe I should add that this is my first laptop too.

Oh, and i know this may be a new question, but where can I get the Asus utility software?(to check fan speeds, diff temps, etc). My Asus motherboard on PC came with a disc with all that stuff but this one did not.
