on the first disc is a 14.xGB unlettered partition, a c: partition with everything on it (I think it was about 75GB?), and the rest is a "data" partition. The second drive is split evenly into two 150GB partitions. I guess that could work for some folks, but I'm not sticking with Asus' scheme.

Well, that's not head on. That's if I bob my head down a bit. I never realised how good my M1530's viewing angles are as I can move my head all over the place and I won't get anything like that.

Do is there 5 partitions in all

    (14GB, 75GB, 230GB), (160GB & 160GB).

What are your options with the included software to remove these partitions?

No, you don't have to go that route. Win 7 has a easy disk utility for changing partition sizes on the fly; go to Help online and look for changing partition size. If you format you'll lose the Recovery partition which can really come in handy down the road, but if you're sure you won't need it format & reinstall is an option. On the G50 under Vista reloading Windows from the provided DVD did NOT re-install the Recovery partition or Expressgate, I assume it works the same on the G51.

don't know about any coupons. I got mine on Amazon for 1409, free shipping, no tax before reading through a lot of threads here. In retrospect, considering that price is about the same, I think I would've gone with xoticpc or gentech just for the outstanding service they seem to provide (plus customization options).

What happens if we formated and we lost the recovery partition. Is it basically impossible to get it back?

Oh goody. Updated to BIOS 205, and now my touchpad doesn't work. I LOVE it when fixes break things.

My "Touchpad Off" light is lit by the power buttons, but there's no way to toggle it. Fn+F9 does nothing.

Don't know; didn't see its release notes. My system shipped with 203, so I just reverted to 204 and everything's fine again. Considering that neither 204 or 205 have proven to be solid BSOD fixed (and the fact I haven't gotten one anyway), I wouldn't be in a huge rush to update.

I have heard reports about the BSOD but I do not know the specifics. Is there are particular game, application or sequence that causes them?

...also...wondering on best price predictions on this model? I am offing my desktop for parts and living off my work laptop until that is complete. Once that is complete I pull the trigger. That is, unless the price on this hits an optimal point which I am still reviewing the market to decide what that point is. Low atm seems to be about $1400.

I also have BIOS 205 and do not have that problem. Try reinstalling the app from Asus that controls the quick function controls. I am able to FN+F9 without problems.

Perhaps you can.... Maybe when you reinstall with the dics into 2 partitions you might get it back. I don't know heh. But well, the discs and the HDD partition are the exact same, with the partition being the faster recovery process only.

Yeah I don't even know what BIOS 205 does, so it is not advisable to update if you don't have problems.

The BSOD is caused by particular games in particular modes. Known games in general appear to be Borderlands, Resident Evil 5, Call of Duty Modern warfare 1/2 and to some extent Combat arms. Some of them, like Call of duty, get BSOD mainly when trying multiplayer gaming online.

Current office working, general use and browsing do not seem to cause any conflict or bsod.

Updating to BIOS 205 killed my ASUS Splendid Utility but my touchpad button continued to work as usual. Reinstalling Splendid fixed that, btw. My Graphics scores in WEI went up from 6.6 to 6.7, too (both Aero & 3D).

the G60's 205 actually only fixed one problem, which was the caps lock light not lighting up occasionally (Someone posted this info in an older post but I forgot who and what thread it was, will update this when I find the source)

Mighty nice temperature man! I am so jealous haha. My regular working temps are on the 60C range :p, only when I boot up I have such temps as you! My HDD are the same and my CPU are 4C higher.
    Congrats :D

Hmmm, you might be right. I didn't notice Asus Splendid breaking because I don't use it haha. At least you can reinstall it.

I see, so it was only to fix that problem? It is funny because I didn't even notice there was such problem haha.

    Holy mole!

I was looking into my power settings. Earlier, I was playing FEAR at its maximum supported resolution, Max CPU, Custom GPU settings, using PowerForGear High Performance. I was a bit miffed to see somewhat low frame rates for such an old game (at times down into the teens). I think the max I saw was about 115.

So I looked into PFG High Performance's advanced settings, and noticed that the max processor state was limited to 60%! 60%!!!!!!!! I switched to Windows' High Performance power option, which enables the processor to go to 100% (of course, I could have changed PFG's settings to match Windows), tried FEAR again, and the frame rates SOARED (Max was well above 200, and Min was 80-something). Then I Maxed out the Processor and GPU settings in the game, and still saw frame rates as high as 198; lowest was 45.

Why in the world would Asus have crippled the its High Performance power setting like that?!

How did you get the GPU temps to idle so low? Most people including me idle in the 60's. Ambient temperatures? Window open and exposed to freezing cold air?

na my room temp is 80F lol but out side it's like below 40 cause we had over a foot of snow in NY. ya the note book cooler i have is a 230mm fan :D so mainly 80% of the laptop is right on top of the fan the other 20% still gets air blown on it.

Does anyone know when you see a price listing in euros like that whether or not it includes the VAT?

Based on the specs and the price of the G51J I'd guess US $1695 or maybe $1795... no VAT here (yet!). That sound about right?

That's true, but that much? I mean... wow. I shouldn't really talk tho. I have no idea what it's going to cost. Pure speculation.

I've seen nothing definitive, more speculation, it's a 260 with GDDR5, basically rebranded. But I'm not willing to put money on that bet. :)

It's always a lot more expensive out of the US, so I wouldn't worry about it costing that much. Hence why everyone imports theirs from the US.

Great review Ryzeki! I just received mine couple of days ago and I'm using it to type the review right now! Anyways I don't know if you have this problem but I realized if I type really fast, some letters are negated... Like if I were to type at the same speed and same hardness on my Dell, I would get no errors while if I did the same thing on this keyboard, I get some letters that are missing or spaces that are missing. I guess you can say it is not as "responsive" as the dell keyboard. Do you have this problem?

Actually, this became a problem recently, and I believe it is a software issue with the synaptics driver. This was not present when I first opened the machine and used it, but right now I do have some missing strokes every now and then.

It's kinda annoying haha. Though a friend of mine has a Dell XPS 13 inch and when he installed something, it would miss about 4 out of every 5 keys, it was super annoying. It was a software problem and I believe this one is too.

From the looks of it, and the card being a GTS, I say the performance should be the same as the GTX260M. They obviously traded 256bits GDDR3 to 128bits GDDR5, and Nvidia has no new designs for their mobile GPUs so my guess is that it will be a G92 variant.

The only aspect it could improve would be heat generated, but otherwise I am not interested on that GTS 360M.

The HD5850 from ATi, on the other hand, is a mighty tempting card that hasn't come out yet, but I am sure that it will be a performance beast.

what is the model number that this is to be included in...

...i was going to pull the trigger on this laptop *G51J* but I was prompted to hold off, which I am doing right now. The only bad thing is...I need to figure out what to buy.

I would like an i5/7 processor with the GTX 260m or greater. Budget is about 1500...so what are the options...

Alright, this is my first post on this forum. Great solid review on the G51J-A1. I have been weighing out the pros & cons on laptops for a while now and am really really considering buying this laptop within the next week or so. ( With a IC compound & Blu-Ray upgrade ). My question is this, what resellers offer the upgrades? Do you know if any of them currently have this in stock? Thanks, any help would be awesome.

The confirmed laptop that's going to be getting the HD5850 is the Acer Aspire 8942G, Asus will be confirming which laptops will get it during CES so you'll have to wait for between the 7-10 January.

After some googling I found that the Asus X77 (17.3") will get i5 430M and the HD5730.

Check out this topic too http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=444352

I was wondering where on the list of GPUs would the HD5730 fall? Above or below the 260m GTX/360m GTS? For DX10 support. I know this is a DX11 card...

Also...are there any reports of the i5 processor, and how it performs when compared to the i7 720QM?
