Hi I just got the g51j from xoticpc.com and I'm loving the thing right now...
granted there are some things to b worked on...
for example has anyone noticed that certain apps freeze the system (IE: Steam, AIM 7) those 2 have caused the system to freeze at random times requiring hard resetting ...
also the media keys dont work on anything but windows media player if anyone could shed some light on this it'd be great
-
Since the video card is downclocked from its original settings of 550/950/1375, to 500/1200/850 ,
do you think it is a good idea to use nvidia software and overclock it back to its stock specs, or even more? -
Did anyone install win-xp on G51j?
I already download all driver-xp for G51j (From G51VX xpdrivers forums)
except xp-driver for creative audigy hd
i'm waiting for do that but i nervous about if i don't have creative audigy hd xp-driver ,Speaker in g51j won't enable
who has information about this please reply i'll wait thanks -
@ryzeki
thanks a lot..
even i am looking for windows xp.. are all the drivers working..do post whether evrything workes properly on xp or not..
and Sasayan
which country r u from..??
i am looking forward to ship it to INDIA.. they r charging $249 for the international shipping.. thts ok with me as total price seems to be lesser than what i would pay for something equivalent to this laptop.. can anybody confirm about the hidden cost.. (if any) -
I'm in the usa, sorry I cant help you on the shipping although I are you getting this overnight? if so it sounds about right imo
And just for clarity the issues I posted above are on windows 7 home premium -
I had the steam issue but mine was due to malware. I read some other user had that same issue, and he had to uninstall the audio drivers or software. Try uninstalling the Creative audio software and see if it still happens. Also try to post on the main forum to see if anyone esel can help you with that.
-
Most g51j owners hang out here so:
Question is what is the creative software and eax4 sticker doing in/on it when the chip is same very old realtek hd that has nothing to do with sb/x-fi. -
thanks man for the advice, I think you are right.
take care and good luck : ) -
It seems to be just software to enhance sound, though you won't appreciate all of it from the speakers, you would need a good pair of headphones
-
-
if I remember correctly,
you said earlier that it is recommended to disable the Physics by Nvidia,
when exactly do you recommend doing that or for what games? -
You can simply try the games that support it on and off, to see if the performance hit is worth it or not. -
cool, i'll give it a try with re5 and see the results : )
-
to everyone wondering about xp on this laptop, see page 1 of the bsod thread: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=430541

Hey Ryzeki, thanks for this great threat!
I have 1 last question before I am running down to my closest store to get this laptop.
- I want to know for the hdmi port on this cpu is an hdmi output?
- if I want to connect with an hdmi cable to my 1080p 50" TV , can i get full 1080p on the tv from this laptop, do u think it would be 100% pure 1080p and not like upscale 1080p quality.
Thanks very much in advance! -
If anyone know the answer, that would great, case I really want this laptop.

I just wanted to clear up a few things about how turbo boost works on these new Core i7 CPUs.
The maximum multiplier when 4, 3, 2 or 1 core is active on a Core i7-720QM is 13, 13, 18 and 21. When the CPU is running a single threaded activity, the multiplier will start out at 21. As soon as a second core becomes active to process some background activity, the maximum multiplier will drop down to 18. If a third or fourth core also becomes active, the maximum multiplier will drop down to 13. When the background processes are taken care of, the multiplier can once again transition back up to 21. The multiplier can be in a continuous state of change as it cycles up and down based on load as cores become active and inactive when they enter the C3/C6 sleep state.
When 4 cores are fully active you can still get a +1 turbo boost from the default 12 multiplier up to 13. When testing on a Dell laptop, some high stress programs can trigger turbo throttling where the multiplier will cycle between 13 and 12 when all 4 cores are fully loaded. This throttling is built into these CPUs and is based on core temperature and power consumption. Some programs like LinX create so much load and heat that you might not be able to get the multiplier above 12 for very long when all 4 cores are fully loaded.
The problem now is monitoring software that can't keep up with the speed that the multiplier can change at. CPU-Z sampling the multiplier once per second is no match for something that can change hundreds of times a second.
I decided to write some software last year that follows the method recommended in the November 2008 Intel Turbo White Paper. It outlines how software needs to read high performance timers within these CPUs to accurately determine the average multiplier in real time for each thread.
i7 Turbo can show you the average multiplier for each thread. This same code is also used in RealTemp and both programs can be downloaded from here.
http://www.sendspace.com/file/z6rxvq
If you have any questions just post a screen shot or two and I'll be happy to tell you what these tools are telling you. The Studio XPS guys with this new processor have already learned a lot about how their laptops are working internally.
Edit: I forgot to mention that i7 Turbo is extremely efficient so you can use it to run a log file while gaming and keep track of what your multiplier is really up to. Single threaded games that spend most of their time running on a single core will be able to use a higher average multiplier and run faster compared to a newer multi threaded game that is frequently using more than a single core.
Here's a good chart from Intel that shows what these new CPUs are capable of.
-
You can get 1080 full resolution progressive no problem. It is not upscaled altho some TVs and even in Nvidia control panel kinda adjust the image a bit to fit in certain screens. The best bet is to put "just scan" on TV to get the full signal, and on Nvidia control panel to NOT scale or adjust the screen.
I use it on my 37inch HDTV 1080p screen and works wonderfully
-
Your welcome ryzeki. I'm glad I could contribute to this informative thread.
The i7 Turbo tool I posted can also be used on the previous generation Core 2 mobile or desktop CPUs that also use high performance timers which can be used to accurately track the multiplier in real time.
Some Core 2 mobile CPUs have a feature called Super Low Frequency Mode (SLFM) where the multiplier can drop down to 3.0X at idle but hardly any software correctly reports this. Some of the newer Core 2 mobile chips also have a feature called Intel Dynamic Acceleration (IDA) which i7 Turbo and RealTemp can also report. It's very similar to turbo boost on the Core i7 CPUs. Core 2 users waiting to get their hands on a new i7-720QM can play with these toys while they're waiting. -
hey Ryzeki, when I play resident evil 5, i get BSoD. do you have this problem too?
* note that i am not overclocking anything? -
Try asking other users with the game to find out what is making the crashes happening. No game so far has really crashed of BSOD me at all. -
That really is great information unclewebb, thank you. The utility is very useful as well. I appreciate you posting about it here. Thanks.
-
and do get it too when on extreme turbo? -
Try playing your games with Extreme Turbo off and see if you still get BSOD. So far, I haven't got any with, or without Extreme Turbo, but your case might be different. -
Just thought I would throw my two cents out there...I've had my G51j since Nov 30, and have been playing WoW, Batman (highest setting (1920 x 1080) with physx enabled-Ryzeki is right, it's playable with phsyx no doubt, but higher framerates without it on), Guild Wars, and Crysis (1600 x 1028 x4 anti aliasing, everything high) for the past week and have had NO problems at all.....No BSOD, no freezing, and the highest my gpu has gotten is 82C at an ambient temp of around 65 F. I even tuned my card to the stock settings of 550/950/1375....in short this system has been able to take everything I've thrown at it so far, without a hitch. Also this is a stock system with no thermal paste added, and I'm not using a cooler.

01. C2D E8400 3.0GHz
02. P43T chipset MB (no crossfire support)
03. 4 GB DDR3 1333MHz
04. ATI Radeon HD 5870
Haven't bought an HD TV yet. Considering a 40" 1080p LCD. Haven't had the time to tryout anything. Hope games and HD movies rock! -
I also wonder about the BSODs, because I haven't got any of them. I heard that in theory, the BSOD was caused by bad memory, so perhaps users with BSOD should fully check their memory with memtest or another program.
As for overclocking... I haven't tried it, but I feel like overclocking to stock GTX260M speeds Maybe I will do so in a week or two.
For regular movies (on Blu-Ray) I have a blu-ray player on my laptop that came with software for the movies on a disc, so you just install that (forgot the name of the software sorry! I will check it when I get home haha). For the rest of media and games, it scales like on your monitor screen unless you have actual 1080p videos downloaded (I have a lot, though a 23min video usually is, at least, 550MB heh).
You will have no problem running any game whatsoever, on the highest settings and resolution If possible, try to get a 120hz TV to help with motion blur, as you will be playing at blazing fast speeds! -
Ryzeki, I don't think you'll have a problem with moving the speeds of the 260M up to stock, I just did it because I run pretty much everything at 1920 x 1080---namely wow, guild wars, and batman....I think it just helps with the overall framerates at the higher display....and I've not seen an increase in temperature so far, according to gpu z...all in all after doing a lot of research, this laptop has definitely been worth it, IMHO
-
Yeah, for me this machine was definitely worth it. -
Yeah, this is my first laptop with a dedicated graphics card, so I'm being as careful as I can...
-
I'm using a laptop with i7 720QM , 4GB DDR3 and 7200rpm HDD , but I don't know why it's so slow on startup. Actually, it took more time to boot then my Core 2 Duo Laptop. Any solutions?
-
Hi,
I think I'm going to order this laptop from Gentech PC very soon, but I have a quick question.
I was first looking at the ASUS G72Gx-RBBX09 from BestBuy, as this is only 1299$. No bag or mouse, but I really dont need it, as I allready got that (not that I dont want the new mouse or bag, but that should not be a reason for getting the g51j). The warranty is also shorter from BestBuy, which sucks..
You still think this ASUS G51J-A1 is the better choise?
I think it is the best choise for now, but I'm really afraid of the heating issue and the BSoD problems people are getting...
Also; you know how well Need For Speed: SHIFT runs on the system?
Thanks =) -
I've had my G51J for a few days, and love it so far except for one minor problem: My speakers aren't working. I'm not technologically challenged - the system volume is on, and all devices seem to be working properly, but nothing is coming out of the speakers. Headphones work fine when plugged in, but I can't get the speakers to work. This is my first new laptop in over five years, and by far my nicest one, so I'm still figuring out a lot of its characteristics. If anyone out there can help me get my speakers working, I'd be much obliged. Thanks.
-
Run the "Realtek HD Audio Manager" control panel. This shows which jacks are in-use based on the mechanical switch. If you see the green jack highlighted/enabled even when headphones are not plugged in, this means you have a busted sensor inside the jack.
To run the control panel, click "Start", then type "Realtek" in the search. If that doesn't work, click "Start", then click "Control Panel", then click "Hardware & Sound". The "Realtek HD Audio Manager" will be at the bottom of the list.
My audio jack went bad a day or two ago.
We're not alone. There are some other threads about exactly this problem:
Once my xmas travels are complete, I'm contacting Asus and/or the online store I bought my G51J from to get an RMA and get it replaced. Very annoying to have to return the laptop for a dumb little mechanical switch. -
And asus had to put creative software on to do that what realtek can in itself
ps.:
I just wiped off all creative bs. that is useless without external creative sound card anyway.
Uninstalled realtek drivers and installed the newest one ^^ and got same graph equalizer and sound effects.
Less crap installed this way, and better ^^ -
Nice review.
I'm thinking about buying G51J-A1 very soon. If you would compare this to Gateway 7915u fx, what would you say?
and how's the temperature? is it steady? I've been hearing bad things about ASUS since they don't have separate coolers for GPU and CPU. -
Sorry everyone! I was out of town for a couple of days so I didn't check my topic
I always buy my Asus laptops, when I can, from the official resellers because frankly the 2 years warranty plus 1 year accidental warranty is great. The G51J is better than G72 but they are basically on the same level performance wise. If you want to save a few bucks plus weight/size is not an issue, the G72GX is a great choice.
Otherwise, the G51J might be the one for you! As for the BoSD and heating issues... to be honest I don't have any single BSoD issue. And I am not alone with this, it seems the BSoD is caused by random things and I suspect it might be a simple hardware issue like memory RAM but well, I don't know and I don't really have it.
For heating issues... well it does get hot, but I haven't had problems because of that. No shutdowns, downclocking or anything. I don't really mind the temperature because it works well and I have 2 years warranty for any problem that arises.
The G51J does get hot but I haven't had got any issues regarding heat. No BSoDs, no overheating and shutting down, no lockups etc. -
Thanks for your reply =)
I will be taking the laptop out of USA and in to Australia as soon as I get it. Actully; a friend of mine is bringing it for me. So if I get any hardware problems it will be very difficult for me to fix, as I wont notice it before I get it myself, and then I guess it's already too late? Or can I still ship it in free to replace the ram, or other hardware, if they figure out this is the problem?
As for the 1yr drop/spil thingy. they say it's only valid inside usa, and I wont be inside usa. So that wont aply for me anyway.
The only downside with the G72Gx from best buy is the Q9000 vs i7 (would I notice much difference? I guess games run smooth either way, but I will be using it for rendering in 3ds max too. But if it's not a big difference then I dont really care.)
The biggest issue is the screen. 17" is good, but 1600x900 is not as good as FHD. I would love this, but then I need the A1 version, which is almost 400$ more than the BestBuy version.
6gb DDR2 vs 4gb DDR3.. I actually think the 6gb will be better than the 4gb, as I dont see the need for DDR3 yet. Any thoughts about that?
Gaming bag/mouse.. Not a big problem for me. I got a bag, and I got a mouse. Still, it's a nice bonus, but not something to close the deal for me.
Quick comparison:
g72x downside over g51j
-Q9000 vs i7-720
-DDR2 vs DDR3
-1600x900 vs FHD
-no mouse/bag
-1yr warranty vs 2yr
g72gx positive over g51j
-6gb vs 4gb
-17" vs 15"
-200$ cheaper
-no BSoD problems so far? (might be random, but still)
- - -
it's just too dificult for me to decide.... =/ First I loved the G72gx from BestBuy. Then I read the 260m was downclocked, so I looked for others and found the g51j-a1. This is also downclocked, but I liked the good monitor resolution and the i7. Then I read about BSoD, and I get worried. As I dont live in USA, i will have a big problem if anything happens with it... And I really need it for university. Last semester, so its important.
You ordered fron Gentech PC? You would recomend them? (maybe they could do some sort of a test, to figure out if it gets BSoD or not before shiping it out for me. That would be great, as then I would not be afraid to get the laptop from from..)
A lot of text.. Sorry.. =P -
Hi, I was originally going to buy Dell Studio XPS 1645, but after all the problems people are having with SXPS 1645 I'm hopefully cancelling my order and I'm thinking about getting Asus G51j instead...
What do you think? Isn't it somewhat lower quality?
There are 2 major thinks I dislike about Asus G51j:
1. there is no RGBLED - is the difference so big? Because I've seen people saying it's gorgeous but also another people saying that thay prefer WLED
2. sound: asus has no subwoofer, I don't know how much would be the difference, will it be very noticeable???
What do you think of getting G51j instead of SXPS 1645 in general???
PS: I'm not gamer, but sometimes I play demanding games like Crysis, MW2 etc. so it has some weight for me (but not crucial) -
Me and my friend, who ordered the G51J as soon as he saw mine, don't have any sort of BSOD problems etc, or anything that the other users have experienced. The problem is, that the fact that some users experience it means you do have a % chance of getting those problems, but hopefully you won't.
1600x900 is still a good resolution despite the size, but if you do need a lot of real state then 1080p is definitely the way to go. There isn't much difference between DDR2 and DDR3 in performance right now, specially between 800mhz vx 1066mhz. 6GB vs 4GB might be something to consider only if you truly need the extra RAM. I don't have any program or software that uses more than 1GB or RAM so 4GB for me is plenty enough and I have never run out of memory nor have problems because of it. Other users that do need extra ram, might find the 6GB a nice thing, but as far as gaming goes, it isn't necesary at all right now.
And yes, I do heavily recommend GentechPC for your purchase consideration, and yeah I am sure they can help you test the machine prior to ship it to check for any issues. They are very kind and helpful. If you can, contact Ken Lee as he is the most helpful GentechPC representative you can find. Tell him I recommended you to them and you would like to have your machine checked before shipping if possible to avoid any BSOD issues.
I am also on the last semester, so I know what you mean Good luck and any other question or problem feel free to drop by or PM me.
1.- Yes, the difference is big mostly on viewing angles but I find the screen more than acceptable and with good colors and contrast. The only issue is the viewing angles and brightness in which on dark rooms or places the black colors start to look gray instead of black. This does not happen on well lit rooms so I rarely notice it and I don't mind it.
2.- Sound, for the most part, tends to be mediocre on laptops (regarding power, not quality) and the lack of subwoofer will be noticeable on certain songs, but to be honest, laptop speakers ALWAYS leave something to be desired, even those setups with 6 speakes and subwoofers. I personaly recommend to use headphones (good quality ones, with bass) instead of the speakers, regardless of brand. If sounds without headphones is extremely important to you, the Asus will probably disappoint you because the volume is not that high (though quality is good).
I mostly game and use CPU- bound applications, so the G51J was a no brainer for me. The Dell comes equipped with an Ati HD4670 as far as I know, and that card, although good, can't compete vs the GTX260M specially on the newer games like MW2 or Crysis.
If you want a gaming laptop, the G51J exceeds the Dell in that department, otherwise you can go with the one that fancies you the most. Any other task besides gaming, and both laptops will give you excellent performance. -
yet again, thanks a lot mate =)
You really take your time to answer in detail, and I love that.
yes, ken Lee is the one I've been talking to over at GentechPC. Just got a mail from him now, where he said that ASUS now has been able to reproduce the problem, and that it is something with the memory and bios not working properly. They are working on an update now, so I hope it will be out if I do get bsod.
I'll ask if he can test it, but I dont think they will. That is a lot to ask, I guess.. =/ And I do understand it =) -
This is my first venture into buying such a powerful laptop and I am now quite disappointed to find all these reports of BSOD, stuttering and stalling and freezing and lockups reports on this new model. It concerns me big time especially for the $1517.xx I am paying out for it.
My question is for all you old hands at the gaming laptops scene... are there any other reports of other Intel Quad I7 based laptops having the same BSOD or crashing problems? This will tell us if the problem is related to a defect in the Intel I7 implementation with Windows 7 64 bit OS specific to ASUS' design if it is only happening on this G51J-A1 model. Like does it happen on the other brandnames Sage or Alienware laptops using I7 Quad cores?
For such a serious problem, I sense that there is a very laid back concern from all the owners who bought this new model. You all are either fairly rich and well off (so the high price paid does not bother you) or you really are laid back bunch of gamers. I would be yelling up ASUS alley every day and night until I get an answer from them. ASUS silence is not good and they don't have anything on their USA website about the G51j-A1 that I can find currently describing this model and its now known problem(s).
ugh~! I really was hoping to get a kick-a$$ laptop for once in my life with a lighted keyboard to boot... and just my luck... expensive and a lemon out of the opening gate.
I am debating on whether or not I should return my shipment as soon as I get it delivered and just wait it out for something else or to see if ASUS comes up with an acceptable fix which does not compromise the original spec'ed performance of the machine. disillusioned and disappointed.
You can't imagine the urge I will have to crack open the package to use this machine! I just have to resist and send it back unopened to ensure I have no hassle for a full refund from newegg.com. ugh! Sorry my first post to this thread had to be this tone... but to me $1517.xx for a defective performing high end laptop just does not cut it for me. -
Not all are having the problems, but if you feel so strong about it, and you dont want to gamble and be one of those, probably just return it and get another brand or wait for it to be fixed before ordering it.
-
For me the price is also quite a lot, specially if the laptop gives me BSoD..
But I want to take the risk. Worst case I can deliver it back later, as it has 2 yr warranty, and it should work. Meanwhile I'll just have to work in XP if I'm one of the unlucky persons.
I would like to get the G72Gx-A1, but 200$ extra is 200$ too much for me I'm afraid.. Or, still not 100% sure, but I do like the G51J-A1, so I hope I'll get a good one.. -
Not every single Asus G51J has issues, just some. The problem has already been reproduced and Asus is working on it. The fact that not all users have problems means it is not an inherent issue of the laptop so you have a % of not having any problems at all. Since Asus is already working on a fix, you shouldn't worry too much into it.
You can also check if Newegg has a refund policy for defective products, so you can at least test yours before sending it back.
And don't assume everyone is a rich laid back gamer I work every day to pay for my studies and it took me about a year to save up enough for this machine. My first tries were with the best buy G51vx and I got a couple of lemons that didn't work so I returned them and saved a little more to get this G51J laptop. I haven't had any issue with it, and I have been playing all the games I want without problems.
Just relax, your investment is not lost. You can choose to return it or get your machine fixed. Everything is fine and whatever problem you have, you can be sure we will help you out with anything we can!
Oh and don't worry, the fix Asus makes won't compromise performance. The fact that there are problem-free machines means that the laptop does work and that most probably the issue is software mostly with the BIOS as Stianbl said.
Test it and if there are issues, just contact Asus or GentechPC about it. And yeah, it seems with XP it works well so you can always try that until the BSoD problem is fixed. -
I did contact newegg.com about refusing the package for a refund and they said no problem, just refuse the package and when they get it back they will refund me account. But I have to be here when UPS truck arrives, so I'll have to be watching and waiting for the delivery.
Now I don't know what to do. On the one hand, I want to accept delivery and play with this thing! On the other hand, I don't want to be stuck and unhappy with it if it cannot be fixed. Will ASUS totally replace the laptop with a new and equivalent model if it turns out they have a serious hardware design flaw? That would be a big recall and replacement and cost them but I would expect them to do that for their customers of this high-end level of laptop. If I could be sure that ASUS will stand behind this situation and replace my laptop for an equal or better laptop in case they discover that there is no fix for the G51J, then I will take the chance and accept the shipment when it comes. I am still on the fence debating it.
I really like the specs on this laptop but cannot deal with the BSOD and lockup bug(s).
I wish ASUS would respond with a fix immediately and at least put a rep on the forums to tell us what ASUS is doing about this problem. It is going to hurt their sales... especially during this peak time of the Holidays shopping.
I have less than a day to decide if I will take the shipment or refuse it now. ugh! -
Some users have lock ups with Steam as soon as it launches, I don't. I have several games installed, and none cause a blue screen of death or a luck up at all. So I can't do much at all. I can't test all games because I simply don't have much money! The only other game I haven't tried that some are getting BSOD is with Call of Duty, either Modern Warfare.
From all the testing I have done, all the games I have played, don't you think it is a little bit difficult to say that maybe I haven't tested enough for BSOD, considering I was technically the first ever user of the G51J and I have played probably more games, and used it longer than other people? Believe me, I simply don't have any of those issues.
Asus is already working on the fix. This is only one of the models they have on sale, and they can't focus 100% on just this one model. The important thing is that they were able to replicate the issue and are currently working on it. If the problem is hardware related, they will simply replace the hardware. That is what the warranty is for. This is not a 100% all G51J problem, remember that people with issues will always speak louder than those satisfied so it is expected to hear more negative things.
Since you are quite concerned with the problem, then I advise you to simply refuse the laptop. Get a different brand and take the risk. Just remember that all laptops will have some sort of quirk or issue. You won't get anything from getting all worked up. Relax a bit and check what other solutions you can get from. You can also go for another G51 model that is not Core i7 equipped and still get a powerful gaming machine. If gaming is your primary concern, the Core i7 is not the only capable contender.
Cheers!
