Whoa. Same issue with the mouse when using my Bluetooth mouse earlier while playing batman. It was horribly laggy and I ended up using the touchpad instead. I'll try again to determine if the palm rest interferes or not.

    Got me ul30vt today.

First impressions, really nice build quality; very shiny inner area, we'll see how that fares. Trackpad seems small; usable but small.

Bloatware, tons of it. Uninstalled most of what I could.

Installed COD:MW2, can play it at 1200x800 resolution at medium-ish settings, runs decent enough for a small lappy.

Viewing angles are pretty bad, but I knew that going in.

Kayboard is nice but not as "solid" feeling as my roommates g51.

I'm going to attempt to install newer vid card drivers, would be cool to overclock this thing more!

To all bluetooth problems, i'm pretty sure it's a normal thing. Bluetooth mice are very unreliable and RF receivers win in every way except convenience (but then again the dongles are so small it doesn't really matter).

I might have missed it in an earlier post but what exactly is the type of RAM does this laptop take? I'm noob when it comes to upgrading parts so I tried using the crucial website and they didn't have this laptop registered there.

Thx for sharing your impressions. Would you mind running HWmonitor in the background while playing MW2, im intersted on seeing how are the temps on Ul30vt while gaming.

Hoping to purchase one in the next month or so. Hoping for a little price drop first though since it just came out.

Quick question for those that already have the UL30vt...
Is there any distortion when using the headphone jack? Some computers have really bad hiss and all sorts of other noises. How clean would you say the line-out is using headphones?

Well, FWIW, I use bluetooth to connect my phone to the internet and have tried to place the phone in different areas. I haven't dropped any signals and the range is actually pretty decent. I haven't tried a BT mouse, but a BIG thing for me was to use BT tether to phone for internet. Since that works fine, I'm very happy with the laptop so far.

The BT mouse thing sounds like a problem with drivers. Who is the manufacturer of the BT chipset? It may be worth looking into different drivers.

Good post, thanks for that. I actually made up my mind yesterday when I played Oblivion on my friend's 16" laptop. It's quite amazing playing a nice looking game on a proper sized screen and keyboard. The 12" would have a smaller capacity battery, and the smaller screen with that high resolution doesn't sound too appealing. The ul30vt is thinner than my netbook (asus n10jh) and it weighs about the same according to asus's official specs, so with that in mind I definitely want a ul30vt. All I have to do now is wait for it become available in Canada, which isn't really a bad thing because it gives me plenty of time to look at reviews and videos of it.

i seriously hope someone can put out a guide or something for clean install using the recovery system that came with the laptop. I don't have a spare Windows 7 key or cd to do this. The only clean install disc that I have is a WinXp cd.

Yeah wondering something similar. Does it come with a CD-key? I'm halfway there with Windows 7 on my USB stick that I got for my desktop, but no extra CD key.

Here's hoping this thing comes to Canada soon. No US friends to ship to me here :)

I just realized something. Since installing the ul80vt ATK Generic Service function, I am not able to switch it back to integrated graphics. I'm not sure if that is the cause for my issue but it was the last thing I installed.

I remember seeing the Nvidia box displaying saying that it was switching back and forth and now it's not appearing anymore. Any ideas?

[edit] I just uninstalled the Generic Service Function, rebooted and now it's back on integrated graphics now. No more turbo button but I'd rather be stuck at 1.73GHz and have the ability to switch between graphics cards and not the other way around.

[edit2] I spoke too soon. I'm stuck with integrated graphics and can't switch back. ....

Do you guys let your machine run at overclocked speed (1.7ghz) all the time? Wouldn't that harm your laptop or something?

no it won't harm it, especially not when asus gives software to do it right out of the box. the main thing to worry about is heat, and asus wouldn't give everyone an unstable overclock. you can run it at 1.7GHz all the time, it just uses more battery.

I did a boot test yesterday. From pressing the "on", typing in my pw to logon to Win7, to the desktop until the "loading" cursor changed to a regular pointer cursor it took ~64 seconds.

I am having trouble finding the background settings for the power saving modes. In particular, for the wallpaper and taskbar. The battery saving default just looks hideous. I checked the advanced settings but the only desktop background feature listed is slideshow. Can anyone help me out with this? Thanks.

Just found out that I might have made a mistake buying this Notebook.

I need XP PRO on the laptop and I just noticed that asus doesn't have any drivers for xp on their web site.

Did anyone tried to install XP ? How did you managed to find drivers, specially for the donkey that controls the "turbo" mode?

    Thx,

Why do you need xp pro? If the program is not heavy you could upgrade to windows 7 PRO or Ultimate and install virtual windows xp, thats what ive been doing cause I need some engineering programs that wont work on 7.

In Power4Gear, under the "Battery Saving" profile, you need to set the "Battery Saving Desktop" option to No. This will display your normal desktop background and also not auto-hide the taskbar. However, the contrast and quality of images will still be dialed way down.

I was actually able to fix this issue. While in Quiet Office or Battery Saver Mode go to control panel - system - advance system settings - performance settings. Then click adjust system for best appearance and apply it (mine was on let windows choose). After changing this my Aero came back, I wanted windows to still chose though, so I changed it back to the original setting and Aero stayed on.

I have the same problem...software that doesn't run on win7.

I never tried win7 for that reason so I didn't know that it was possible to open virtual machines of XP within the win7.

Is that available in this Home edition or just in the Pro edition?

    Thx,

Okay so I ran the AI Recovery disk and used up 4 dvd's but when I went to reformat with those disks it seemed to recognize the partitions. Luckily I had my student edition of 7 Pro so I slapped that on popped in the driver disk and I must say that is one of best driver disks i have dealt with. Other than doing it that way i'm not sure how to do a clean install without partitions.

I just flew from DC to Chicago and then Vegas today, used the laptop on the plane the entire time to work on my final.. It was battery saving mode + msword pretty much all the way, and after I got off there was still 48% battery left. Very happy with the battery life.

Well, FWIW, I saw that deal on slickdeals.net.

Also, after looking into it more, the battery is actually sold by Buy.com. On their website, I tried to look for more information and found that the page lists a 6-cell battery. Please be careful in buying this battery. I'd check with ASUS and Buy.com and make sure it's the correct battery.
