I was looking over the differences between the x1, a1, and alienware m11x... Supposedly the x1's mem is upgradable to 8gb and the a1 is not. Also, considering the price point is going to be mostly likely higher than $800, and the battery is looking at 3hrs max - the m11x doesn't seem very hot to me. I just got on the waitlist for a x1... Any1 have any speculations or informed guesses to when it will be in stock again?

I got a 128Gb Super Talent UltraDrive ME. Performancewise it's right up there with the OCZ Vertex, but a little cheaper.

There's no difference in memory capacity between the X1 and the A1. If you back up in the thread, someone posted an exerpt from the Amazon board where the Asus rep said that something along the lines of the X1 and A1 supporting up to 8GB, but were only certified for 4GB...

Try perform a system restore back to when your laptop was still running fine.

    Very nice :)
I'm considering getting a 80GB or 160GB Intel SSD for the UL30VT. I'm currently using a 256GB SSD from G.SKill on my Dell laptop and have just gotten so used to SSD speeds that any mechanical HDD seems slow....I feel I may have spoiled myself a bit too much  :p

The A1 will most likely memory upgradable. It is something that ASUS representative in Amazon mentioned, although there haven't test it yet. Supposedly, the mainboard of A1 and X1 is similar, so both are future-upgradeable.

OTT: Where can I find a retailer selling UL30VT-A1 (Asian version) in Malaysia? Would kill the cat for the information..

Just out of curiosity, where do you use more than 4GB of RAM? My quad-core PC has 4GB and I thought I was a power user, but I always bottleneck CPU and internet before RAM...

yeah i know i already answered this for someone but i ran the fps test built in with the game and low settings for graphics was only one playable. medium and high i think it was something like 11-13 fps. but that was before gpu overclock. might be able to get medium playable. i know the overclocking helped a ton in empire total war. i think im playing on medium with unit size and and few other settings increased.

also the vaio z from ces with the gt330m(gt240m) sounds awesome but the price is real killer but it i think it comes with ssd so almost worth and why didnt alienware put that gt335m in a 13" laptop...

Although I don't know where exactly they are sold in Malaysia, a good place to start asking is at Low Yat Plaza and Imbi Plaza in KL

I typically use more than 4GB of ram when working with large photoshop files. Nowadays, it's not uncommon for people to use 4GB+ of ram, especially for VT users operating multiple operating system simultaneously.

Well, I thought I was at the top of the list on Amazon since I pre-ordered only about an hour after it showed there. But as of now, I have no shipping confirmation. But I think it will be soon since the status shows they are preparing my order for shipment.

Someone on the Amazon forum said they pre-ordered yesterday (Jan. 7), and they already got the shipping confirmation that same night. So I have no idea about how they determine the priority. Some people have said it relates to proximity to distribution centers, but I think that was disputed elsewhere. Oh well, it won't be that much longer!

I think it depends on the shipping options you chose during checkout. From experience, I've noticed that if you choose 2-day shipping or faster, the processing time for Amazon to actually ship the item is also faster.

Been busy and haven't had time to check the thread. But yes, the generic ac adapter worked just fine on the my UL30VT-X1.

    Here's a link of what I bought.

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250536300572&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

$8.05 shipped, much cheaper than the $49.99 for the OEM adapter. Quality wise, it's okay, the sticker looks extremely generic, but the adapter side looks like it's fairly decent in quality. It's also only a dual prong ac plug, so it's missing the ground. The picture of the ac adapter on the auction was exactly what I got. Overall, very happy with the purchase.

For all you people looking at the next greatest laptop on the horizon, I wanted to share a nugget of wisdom that holds a lot of truth but is agony to stick to:

Wait until you really need a laptop before you decide you are going to buy. Prices go down, new technology comes out for the same price, etc.

If you buy now but don't need it for another two months, you will regret your decision.
If you need it now, then you should not regret it because the new technology was simply not available.

It's hard to follow this wisdom because, like everyone, I am impulsive and I want it NOW - I just really don't need it right now ;).

    Case in point:
I *almost* bought a Dell 14z in November off the Dell outlet store for $899 thinking I was getting a good deal.
That was until someone pointed out the UL30VT which kicks the pants off the 14z in all but raw CPU power.

I have since waited for it, since I don't need it until next week.

    So the bottom line:
If you don't need it now, don't get it now. You'll either find it cheaper later or you'll spend the same amount for something better.

    /rant

Yes, that's all good, but will the battery life be just as good as the UL30VT? What we are probably waiting for the the U version of the arrandale processor (successor to the current ULV) to be released and available to the general public.

You mean the U30Jc? I mentioned it in my Asus Magazine thread :p

The U30Jc looks nice, but you're going to sacrifice battery life and the slim profile compared to the UL30VT. The 310M is essentially the same as the 210M, (most likely just a rebrand) The CPU will be faster, but this also translate to more heat and power consumption.

U30JC is a bigger laptop...UL30JT is the the exact same as the UL30VT but i7, matte design, and Nvidia 310M

Here's the new updated/revised UL80VT with Nvidia 310m and it states that its slower than the UL80JT so I am assuming its the same as the UL30JT

I actually considered getting the Intel SSD since gentech offered that as an option. However, 80GB seemed too small and 160GB was a little too pricey. 120GB turned out to be a palatable compromise.

i'm glad i waited , just cancelled my order with amazon. I really like the matte finish on the jt, and the jc seems cool too, I just wish they would have upgraded the graphics. its kind of misleading to just 'rename' the same card

edit: i hope they changed the screens on these things

UL30jt's graphic card has 1GB of memory compared to 512MB of the ul30vt's. So I think that's an upgrade.

but the u30jc has only 512MB, so that could be a 'rename'. But u30jc has a bigger profile than ul30vt, so the UL30jt is a better comparison.

Anyone know the power consumption of the Intel Core i7 – 640UM/620UM compared to the SU7300 of the ul30vt's?

EDIT: I did some research. Looks like the i7 640UM consume about 18W, but that's with the integrated intel graphic card. The SU7300 consume about 10W, without the intel graphic. So I guess the question now is how much does the Intel graphic card consume by itself in the ul30vt. More research to come...

so yesterday i spent the better part of a few hours calling and re-calling asus tech support and product and pre-support lines to get a few answers and see if a few things were possible in upgrading this laptop ... the reason i re-called tech support several times was after being on hold forever i got hung up on and no one ever bothered to call me back after taking both my name and phone number every time - whats up with that. so NOT impressive!

anyways, from what i can tell the tech department has its head up its -you know what- and none of the departments seem to communicate with each other about anything ...

i asked about swapping out the keyboard for a backlit one - answers varied - but a few people said no definitively ... id ask a rep this question directly, perhaps Osama could push this question to the amazon forums and ask Mr Asus himself??

i also tried asking about the screen, its too glossy and impossible to view sitting in anything but the house with the shades down. i asked if it was possible to swap the screen out with another asus model screen that was identical in spec but not a glare type glossy model ... i got several emphatic yes answers and one no, but that they thought it might be possible and to go ask the distributor directly. i plan on asking this question to both gentech and xotic and see what they say ... but since neither offer it as a customization when purchasing i am guessing no, but how awesome if they said yes and for only a few bucks more?

so there ya go, for what its worth.

This is after-the-fact now (my Amazon order of the A1 is on its way), but I'll mention this anyway.

Xoticpc now shows pictures of the A1 as being silver, not black. Just yesterday, Justin W sent me email saying it was confirmed to be black by two ASUS reps. So I kept my Amazon pre-order. Xoticpc probably missed out on many orders from people like me who wanted silver and the lower price. I'll get over it.

The graphics card is unlikely to be an upgrade since the GPU (310M) has only a 64bit bandwidth. This limits the usage of the video card memory. Anything above 512MB (and most likely 256MB) is simply a waste and marketing ploy.

Nvidia's product page shows that the max memory for the 310M is 512MB.

So I guess Asus made a mistake on either the memory size (should 512MB not 1GB), or the GPU model (it's not 310M).

Anyway, I don't really need a new computer now, so I'll wait until there are more details on this ul30jt.

Not worried about the new JT. The only essential differences to me were the new i7 and the 310. The 310 is afaik a re-branded 210 and the i7s that they are offering this with are 1.2 and 1.06 ghz respectively.

Whoever gets their vt-a1 could you please take some pictures or do an unboxing video i really want to see what it is going to look like.

    Flickering Issue:

I would be really grateful if anyone can psot that they nmoticed the following:

This issue is completely reproducible and consistent: basically its triggered by swtching FROM the nvidia GFX chip TO the intel integrated chip

    - exactly 2 mins ( 120sec) after switching to integrated graphics the screen will suddenly flicker black and white before resuming normal I have noticed this coincides exactly when the nvidia card is dropped from the devices manager's display adaptor list.

    it happens like clockwork!

i dont know why there needs to be a 2min delay- and it occurs no matter what you are doing on screen.

All drivers up to date (according to windows update! there MAY be a newer nvidia driver?)

can you guys tell me if this happens to anyone else> I would be really grateful! Tim

dang it, dang it, dang it... I just cancelled my UL30VT-A1 for the 3rd time with Amazon, am now stoked about the UL30JT, even moreso than the Alienware M11X (13" screen). If anyone sees a PC company doing pre-orders on this unit, let us know.

I'm pretty sure it looks very similar if not identical to the silver UL30A, check some videos out on youtube:

The new i7's turbo to 2.13 and 2.27 GHz. And besides, they will destroy the SU7300 with the new architecture and all that other fancy stuff.

Actually you might be wrong. According to this: http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-310M.22439.0.html
It only has 512MB and is essentially the same thing as the 210M.
