yeah the synaptics driver is basically the ELAN driver.

my previous post mentioned that whenever I had the driver installed, the touchpad would feel jerky but the hotkeys would work, but when i uninstalled them, the touchpad worked fine but the hotkeys stopped working.

and i did not find a solution in pages 20-60.

edit: There is a topic about it on the ASUS forums too.

While I'm considering a UL30vt for myself, I'm also in the market for a notebook for my wife. Her needs and requirements are less than my own, and she plans to use the laptop primarily to surf the web, check email, author simple documents in Word or Excel, and maybe use an app like Microsoft Money (at least until she's forced to switch to Quicken, etc.). She's not into games (though the Sims series interests her), so I don't think she'll benefit from a dedicated 3D video card. She might watch some movies or stream off of our Slingbox too, which the built in Intel 4500 onboard video may be able to handle acceptably. That leads me to wonder if a UL30a will be sufficient for her, but I worry about not having the turbo processor speed of the UL30vt for general everyday "productivity" performance (multi-tasking w/ several browser tabs open, etc.). Will the standard UL30a still have enough juice to run what she needs? Or should I hold out and get her the UL30vt model too? Part of me wonders if this will be overkill and just money wasted on features and performance she may not ever use or enjoy.

Just continue using the battery below 0% level. Then charge the battery to full and that'll calibrate the battery meter and give you a better reading.

Tried to overclock/underclock the nVidia GPU usng the nVidia Performance Tools, but it will only let me save changes to the Shader speed. If I try and change the memory speed or the core, it will result in an 'Invalid Selection" and revert back to stock clocks.

Being that many people have used this to overclock their system, I have to wonder if perhaps the drivers I am using from Asus are outdated. Have they released updated ones?

At the moment I haven't seen new laptop drivers for the UL30VT. I'm desperately trying to find them as the HD Flash and Optimized MPEG-4 Decoding is in drivers > 191+.

I haven't attempted to overclock the video card yet myself but I will once the new drivers are released.

I wonder when they'll released an vt-x with 5600mah battery. Black color + 5600mah would be the deal breaker for me.

It's gonna be overpriced when it comes here. The X1 is already $900, are they gonna price the A1 at the 1k mark?

I sure hope it's only $950. If the X1 in Canada is $100 more expensive than it's US counterpart, then logically the A1 should also follow that same pricing scheme.

Well...I had bought Asus ul30A previously, but gave it away to my brother when I heard about the vt version. I'm not a gamer (and when I do, I play games on my desktop), but when I played hulu at 480p, full screen, the ul30A was noticeably slow compared to my 1 year old laptop (Asus x83vm: core 2 duo p8700, nvidia 9600m). Given that, I would say get the VT version, only because if you're watching any videos at high def, I think you'll notice the difference. However, I cannot say for sure since I have not tested the vt version, but from what others are saying about the vt version, I would say there is gonna a be large difference. hope this helps..

Personally, I think $1k is ridiculous for a CULV laptop (with taxes). With CES so close i'm just gonna wait and see what happens. Been waiting so long already what's another few months? =D

It might be due to the acpi settings in the bios. On a previous laptop (Asus G1) I tried upgrading it to a 320 GB Seagate and it was extremely annoying; very loud seeking and parking. I replaced it with a Hitachi 500 GB (make of the original 160 GB it came with) after reading how the acpi functions are proprietary to different drives. I placed the Seagate 320 GB into a friends Sony which originally came with a Seagate 80 GB and it was quiet. So long story short maybe the newer ul30vt-a1 have had more than just chassis improvements over the older ul30vt-x1's and ul30a's. Or I just lucked out :p

    Hello

I have a silver Asus UL30VT bought in Sweden. I wan't to do a fresh install of Windows 7 but the disk I got with the computer only seems to be a backup disk? When I boot the disk it's clear it's not a standard Windows 7 disk and I only have the option to restore the system to way it was when I bought it. In other words loaded with bloatware...

There should be two disc's. The recovery is usually is the OS, possibly with some Asus specific's like wallpaper. The second disc is the drivers and other software. When I got my Windows 7 upgrade disc's that is what I had recieved.

With this you could use the recovery disc just for a basic Windows install and then later add the drivers or bloatware.........

I thought this Windows disc is plagued with bloatware already?

I've read the parts about booting from a USB in this thread and I think I understand more now, but I'm still confused. So I can prepare a usb with my desktop running home basic?

no not all of them are affected. Quite a few people who apply a lot of pressure and almost purposely trying to make the creeking noise will suffer this problem. Most suggested the problem should not appear under normal use.

When I did the Windows 7 install on my U81a from the upgrade disc, also a recovery disc, it installed only Windows 7 with a proprietary wall paper. I could see nothing other than the standard OS install. Even the Asus specific drivers were not there.

Now the driver disc had all the bloatware and drivers specific for Asus........

I'm only on page 45 of the thread but wanted to post ahead about the bluetooth issue some were having. The latest Intel chipset driver (12/16/09) states this in the Release Notes:

    ***

    New Features

    Features Added in PV 9.1.1.1025
    ID
    Description
    1
Implemented workaround for a Bluetooth pairing issue

    ***

My apologies if this has been covered before, or isn't related, but I still have almost 100 pages to read and didn't want to wait.

Just pre-ordered a UL30Vt-A1 from Amazon; one of the forum posts there says shipping is 1/11 - I can't wait! The only thing I'd add if I could would be a backlit keyboard... otherwise this looks like the perfect thin & light laptop.

Macbook pro 13 or UL30VT... I'm stumped :) Is UL30VT the best 13" out there as far as PC notebooks go? Isn't the envy 13 from hp a decent alternative to the UL30VT?

So I have a slow desktop running vista home basic, and a 4gb usb stick. What would you recommend me doing for a fresh install when I order the ul30vt? Should I buy a external dvd just to that I could install it using a cd? Or try to follow a guide on using ISO's (I don't even know what that is) to make a bootable usb?

There has been some debate about the maximum RAM capacity of the UL30Vt Series.

    The ASUS website states:
DDR3 1066 MHz SDRAM, 2 x SODIMM socket for expansion up to 4GB SDRAM

While the UL30VT-X1 at Amazon states:
    4GB of DDR3 RAM, 2 slots, 8GB Max

And the UL30Vt-A1 at Amazon states:
    4GB of DDR3 RAM, 2 slots, 4GB Max

The user manual that is available from the ASUS website provides no information.

From this information, one would be lead to believe that the UL30Vt-X1 holds up to 8GB while the (more expensive) UL30Vt-A1 holds up to 4GB.
Since the ASUS website doesn't describe each variation separately it's difficult to verify if that is indeed the case.

    So my request:
Someone with a UL30Vt-X1 please go to Crucial and run the system scanner to verify the maximum ram.
If that doesn't work, try Belarc Advisor and report back with the motherboard details so we can look into it more.

Hi all, I just bought the Australian version (it's silver and comes with 4GB RAM/320GB HDD) of the UL30VT and am really happy, what a fantastic little machine.
I've noticed the noisy HDD that many have mentioned but no creaky palm rest so thats nice. The track pad isn't amazing but I prefer to use a BT mouse anyway.
Does anyone know how to get audio over HDMI working? There is no option for digital audio over HDMI in the sound panel and there aren't any new VGA driver updates from Asus.

first time poster, loooong time reader (actually finished reading from start to finish a few days ago - award for longest thread ever on a single topic!)

pre-ordered a1 ... excited by all the testers and the tips you've provided to us thus far *thank you*

@tallan - id have to agree, it needs a backlit keyboard that can be turned on and off like on the macbook pros ... some others have commented the ul series would never adopt such a feature - i think its silly of them not to and would not be a major drain on power since the feature would have toggle ability.

anyone know if replacement backlit keyboards are swapable/available? im aware of the diy out there but im a stickler for original parts...

thanks again for all the input into this thread! hope your all enjoying your new toys!

those two scanners did not return any info about the max memory supported but i used SIW(System Information for Windows) and it reported that the max capacity it can support is 8192megabytes. So yes the X1 supports 8GB. :)

Where did you buy it from in Australia and how much?

I'm trying to locate a cheap one in HK but if I can't I might have to resort to getting one here in Australia.

That is up to you and your abilities. The easy way out is an external drive as then you work it like any other install. The other way you have to work at it. Personally I'm more than capable but lazy, thats what happens as you get older, so external drive it is for me...........

Not what I expected, but solid proof that the amazon site is probably right on both the x1 and the a1.
