The A1 should be the same material as the X1, just different color. Aluminum brushed silver top, silver plastic for the base.
And Asus confirmed on Amazon that this is indeed the A1 model:
I suggested my speculated specifications:
5600mAh 84Whr battery
2-year Warranty
Silver
~$850
And he responded with:
It's like Osman works for ASUS or something!
A1
I think it will start shipping from Amazon.com 1/12. Possibly a day or two earlier. Canada will take an extra week.

hmm i thought they would sell it for more than 850 with the warranty and battery. seems like us who paid 799 got a little ripped off -
does anyone know if theres an option to buy an extended warranty? it would be nice to add 1 more year warranty to my X1, i kinda don't want to go through the hassle of returning it.. -
for me on the other hand. I got my laptop for 699 because i had $100 giftcard. -
No way in hell the A1 will be only $850. You'll see.
-
-
I don't get this. Why are you angry because another product is on the market? If you liked the laptop you got for the price you got it, nothing about it has changed because another model is on the market.
-
I was probably overreacting when I mentioned the clicking - it really becomes a minor issue later on.
Question - has anyone gamed on their UL30VT? I've been playing some HoN and I get some weird graphical glitches with the 210m. Anyone else have a similar experience? -
Alright, so the silver one everyone seemed to have wanted is finally confirmed. From screenshots, I find the black one a lot more sleek --with the lid down anyhow. When its open, I find the silver one has a slight upper hand. And both versions still have that rather cheap looking glossy black bezel...
But I guess Ill just have to hop down to an asus dealer in town and compare in person first.
Anyhow, those still on the waiting train might as well wait until CES ends before pulling the trigger. Sony and Dell are the major companies that havent really embraced CULV yet (dell has a few, sony to my knowledge doesnt have any culv based laptops); maybe theyll put something nice on the table @ CES. -
Yeah, Sony and Dell will probably have some nice offerings at CES but I seriously doubt they can compete with the 800$ price. And anyways you most likely won't see any of the laptops that will be announced at CES actually available until Q2 of 2010 or in March at the earliest.
And I too agree that the black one looks better while the lid is closed and the silver has the upper hand when opened. Somehow the contrast between the black keyboard and silver chassis looks nicer. -
Has anyone had any luck getting Linux to install? Ubuntu 9.10 works well out of the box except I can't get it to work with the nvidia driver.
-
Capt'n Corrupt Notebook Evangelist
You can't get it to work *with* the NVidia driver? So does this mean that your installation is somehow not using the G210M? Most people that want the lappie and Linux would prefer to have the G210M turned off as a power saving measure.
}:^)~ -
For those experiencing mild - medium creaking/clicking palm rests, try unscrewing and re-screwing the bolts on the bottom of your laptop. When you screw them back on, don't screw them as tight. Worked for me.
I seem to be having problems with the nvidia drivers - Heroes of Newerth still gets pretty screwy. Any ideas? -
I uninstalled the elan touchpad drivers and found touch pad much more responsive and smooth to use than before.
-
A few of you have mentioned receiving the higher capacity battery... some of have been waiting to hear about it...
Also.. to those worried about buying cuz something's gonna come out better next month or after CES.. yeah your right.. but that's always gonna be the case... stop chasing your tail and pull the trigger..
ANyone play Borderlands on the little bugger? or Fallout 3? -
I'm a little perturbed, only because I would have liked the better battery. The warranty is a wash because my CC covers a 2nd year on items with 1yr-or-less manufacturer's. An item with a 2yr manufacturers warranty doesn't get extended.
But I needed a laptop now to be able to work from my folks' over the holidays....and I like black a bit better. -
-
i found that FN + brightness control doesn't always work. You would need to go to power4gears to adjust the settings then press Save for the brightness to be changed... is this a problem? but FN + volume works well

I have been tested the 5600mAh battery. I downloaded a program called "Battery Eater Pro 2.7" which, by the way, is incredable. Great program. Anyway here is the results so far (I might not do a complete drain due to how long it takes).
"High Performance" (nVidia GPU Enabled)
Turbo Off (Were working at 1.3Ghz stock SU7300)
Task Manager Shows 100% CPU Usage Pegged When Running Battery Eater Pro 2.7
Webcam Off
Wireless disabled (I want to test unplugged offline 3D Gaming)
Screen Brightness to 20% (This is where all my profiles are set, it is perfect)
Processor Max State = 100%
Processor Min State = 5%
Battery Eater Pro ran in Windowed mode at 1280x600x32 bit.
Battery Eater Pro taxes the CPU, Hard Drive and GPU to give a worst case scenario depending on your settings.
The result so far....
29 minutes and 35 seconds later it went from 100% to 90% battery life remaining. Rounding down to 29 minutes and taking that times 9 (not 10, because no one is going to run the batter to 0) we end up with... 261 minutes, which equates into 4 hours and 21 minutes to get to 10-12% battery life.
I am impressed... Now, using the BT mouse and having heavy Wifi tracking is going to bring this number down (probably an hour), but it is good to know that with Turbo Disabled, you WILL get a solid 3 hours of anything you want with everything turned on. THAT is impressive...
BTW, Lotro with the 4400mAh battery used 85% battery and allowed me to play 2 hours and 15 minutes. That is heavy wifi, heavy mouse, heavy graphics and heavy CPU. It will not get anymore taxing than that. Using the 5600mAh battery will easily result in me getting 3+ hours with about 10% battery to spare.
Depending on how my day goes, I may give an update when I have 75% battery life remaining. -
This is pretty annoying, so it would be nice to know if there is a fix.
For anyone that doesn't have Power4Gear installed, do the FN brightness keys work after hibernate and sleep modes? -
-
To those with the problems after sleep/hibernate - Did you do a fresh install of Windows 7? The function controls have always worked for me, whether sleep or not. On a side note, sleep uses a slight bit of battery, so I typically do shutdowns when I done because it only takes me 17 seconds to boot up and 5 seconds to shut down. It will take 22 seconds to boot up if I have the nVidia enabled, since it launches that right before bringing you to the desktop.
-
i am confused the button for switching doesnt respond anymore
neither the brigtness it shows on the screen with no effect
the intel gpu doesnt play 1080p movies which is annoying
and i closed dwm.exe (or something!!) from the task manager and the laptop worked much faster
what is dwm??? -
if someone wants to sell their x1 to get the A1, pm me! I'd rather deal w/ someone local (southern california)

How do you switch between Nvidia and Integrated?
Also does anyone get BLACK screen for 1-2 seconds before the login screen when the computer boots up? How to fix that?
I enabled TURBO mode, but it is still showing 1.3ghz in MY COMPUTER? -
I used to have an issue with switching not working randomly until I narrowed it down. Try it out.
Oh yeah, got my new keyboard in. Space bar issue is completely gone -
-
Did I miss something in there?
Thanks for any guidance. -
I just bought this laptop and the wireless seems very slow and unstable as compared to my last laptop...any suggestions on how I can fix that aswell?
Thanks alot. -
-
just received my UL30VT-x1 today.
does anyone know if its possible to create the backup DVDs using virtual drives and making the backup DVDs into an iso? thanks! -
-
Anyone screen go black at the login screen for 2-3 seconds?
-
.
-
-
i think by default it starts with the intel graphics but then switches over to nvidia at the login screen
if this is the case, then there probably isnt a fix unless asus/nvidia release new drivers -
To new members that have just got there laptop.
Is there any squeeks or other noises coming from the front of your laptops that have been reported by other owners when picked up or pressed down near the trackpad/palmrest area on your new machines?
How is the screen quality from your new toys? -
as for the screen quality, i have to agree with others that vertical viewing angles are horrible, and horizontal viewing angles aren't as bad as the vertical. Honestly, this doesn't bother me because i'm always going to be looking the screen straight on anyway! the screen quality straight on i think is fabulous. others may disagree, but i'm not as nit picky about these kinds of things so yeah. -
-
No squeaks from either side of the trackpad on my ul30vt. All's been great so far.
-
Do you guys run on turbo all the time?

I also tried blacklisting intel_agp but that doesn't seem to want to help the nvidia driver load. Sooo frustrating. Looks like this is going to go back to Asus. -
I've had my UL30VT for 10-15 days and just got a creak/click to the left of the trackpad. Kind of annoying, anything we can do?
-
No squeaks are being heard from my unit.
-
Thanks for all the quick answers people
So I guess we can all agree the screen is good as long as you are straight on with it.
I guess it's hit or miss when it comes to any creak's or clicking noise you might get when putting some stress on this laptop, but I'm usually pretty gentle with my laptops so hopefully that won't be a issue when I get mine.
Forgot to ask about screen brightness.
So what's verdict on that?Good?Bad?
