Yeah, I did something similar. I moved to the middle of the woods and I notice anyone who jumps on the network becuase my NAS box, which acts as the SMB master server, sends me notifications when an "unauthorized" or unknown user jumps on the network, or at least when a windows machine jumps on. But, anyway...if physical location isn't enough of a deterrent..the 12-guage I greet wifi-stealers with is generally enough to make them leave and never come back. (and before you ask or freak out...i don't go running outside like a drunken redneck shooting going 'GET OFF MY LAND'...i don't walk up with it pointed...I merely walk up and go "hey, you enjoyin that private internet connection?" half the time it's not even loaded..in fact, the 12-guage pump i've got isn't 100% right...but that trademark "cha-chick" is enough to scare anyone....if they're not scared of the gun itself. don't worry...police have been spoken to...and apparently, everything I'm doing is considered well within my legal rights..since as they see it, they are trespassing and using a service without permission)
If you're in a crowded area....sure, you need all the security you can get...personally, i wouldn't run encryption because it severely degrades performance which is a big deal when you're doing things like streaming dvd's over the network...but i'd disable SSID and enable mac filtering and just keep an eye on who's on my network. i still think the idea of having an open point but have it completely walled off would be killer.
my next trick will be putting security options in a linux machine i'm making a router so that if you don't login (and the box doesn't already know your mac), hey, guess what, no WAN access for you. That's overkill for my needs...then again, I enjoy overkill.

well, i will be home in 6days and the copper heatsinks should be there, as well as some MX-3 paste. I hope it all works to get my temps to the 80's
-
If I do this mod on my G72GX, would it still be necessary for me to get a laptop cooler as many others in this thread have suggested? -
But...yeah...as I tell people, my wifi key is 2bbl-12gu-00....2 barrel 12 guage double aught buck. -
Has anyone had issues with sound? while installing Batman Arkham Asylum I got a warning of problems with RealTek soundcards.
I have also had issues with the movie cut-scenes in Medieval II: Total War. The sound is choppy in them. -
-
-
Hello. anyone know what is the max cpu is in the g72? can you get quad core? another question i have is... anyone have the power supply burn up? i have had my g72 for a week and the power supply fried
-
I've also gotten that choppy/laggy sound with the MW2 videos. Everything but that works perfect.
Would it be wise to get some new drivers for whatever sound card this has?
ed: I mean in-game videos. -
With my copper mod plus my cooler these are my temps
On a more exciting note - I just bought an Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 wireless card for my laptop from someone in the marketplace so I am anxiously awaiting the card to replace my Azurewave card. It's a half height card and there isn't a screw mount for a half-height card but I think I will rig a rubber support beam for it to rest on. I will post some pics when I can. -
-
Otherwise, probably you could get updated driver directly from Realtek's site, I'd guess. -
power and does Intel vPro. The Intel's also have better driver support than Azurewave.
-
Today I played MW2 and the sound problem was gone. That was a few hours ago and I have not tried it after turning the laptop off then. I'll post to see how it went -
Success!! Bit of a pain in the to get the card installed but I'm running on the Ultimate-N 6300 right now and its pretty sweet. It even lets me share my connection with others, making my computer the router.
Here is a pic of the laptop opened up and the Azurewave card removed
Here is a pic of the two cards side by side.
I used a jewelers screw driver set and tweezers to align the card and then pushed it into the slot. The one thing to mention here is that the mini pci-e slot is spring loaded which is why the full height card is screwed in. I did have to make one adjustment to account for the spring-loaded slot to hold the card at the right level. I put two rubber bumpers on the top of the card, over the screw holes, that were about 1/4 inch high (double the height of the chipset) and this held the card straight. -
I figured out what was causing it. Whenever I over-clock the CPU with turbo gear, I get that choppy sound on certain videos.
-
btw I'm glad that you've found a solution... -
Is it possible and worth it to over-clock the GPU? -
-
Stock clocks for the GTX 260M are 550/950/1375, but ASUS ships them out downclocked to 500/800/1250. You can use the NVIDIA Performance Tools which is part of the NVIDIA System Tools 6.05 to set the clocks and save them to a config. It is accessible through the NVIDIA control panel. On exit you will be asked if you want the system to default to these on boot. Say 'Yes' here to run @ those speeds normally.
-
do you get a noticeable upgrade at those speeds?
Also, the blue screen of death is back!. I did what Tim suggested with driversweeper and for a few days It was gone. These 2 days I've had it, though, only one per day. -
-
-
Are you overclocking any of your components? If so, roll those changes back. Run at the "stock" ASUS clocks for everything. Also If you can post a photo of the bluescreen along with sending me the minidump of the BSOD, I may be able to take a closer look. You can see if your computer does a minidump by right-clicking on My Computer->Properties->Advanced tab->Startup and Recovery->Settings->System Failure section. It should tell you where the dump is put on your system.
You can also try running cpugenie. You get a 30-day free trial of the full product. I use it to undervolt my cpu. It can start dropping the voltage and run stability tests for you. This will help with heat (if that's an issue) and may aid in making the system a little more stable. -
Heads-up:
Asus is offering $200 rebate for G72GX-A1 purchases made from March 1-31.
http://promos.asus.com/US/rebate/Mar10/ASUS_Notebook_MIR_Mar10.pdf -
-
How did you get an A1 for $1250?!?
And does Asus actually honor their rebates?
For some reason The G72 just isn't dropping in price, unless I'm missing something -
-
Oh darn, I was hoping some store was selling them for that
Why the hey won't the A1 drop in price already! -
The crash said the problem was with a file, but it happens quick so I can't remember the name exactly. I do know it starts with "nv".
Bioshock crashes with pretty much anything. I can't even start to play it
First game I've had serious issues with. I am sure it is a problem with it and not the machine itself. -
So I'm getting no performance increase overclocking the Q9000. It is actually degrading performance by capping my fps in games. I'm using the right clock generator number ICS9LPRS929AKLF. Anyone know what's up?
-
I bought this laptop 2 weeks ago, I'm satisfied except that I always get a BSOS when I try yo wake up the computer from sleep mode (only does it when i'm on battery mode)... Anyone's having the same issue?
-
-
ok so there's no way to use the sleep mode right now, that's a disappointment but at least I can fix it...
-
Just a heads up for those of you still looking to add a second HDD to the units that shipped with only one.
The Asus eStore is showing the hard drive bracket in stock! Maybe I'm late to the party here, but I've been keeping an eye on this for over three months and this is the first time they have been in stock online.
Here's the link: M70SV/N70S/G71 HDD BRKT ASSY
I ordered one earlier, so I'll report back when I get my shipping conformation, but it looks good to go. -

If anyone is considering an SSD, here is my experience:
Right now I'm installing a new 40GB Intel X25-v SSD on the best buy version of the G72gx.
It was not necessary to move the original 500GB hd. I installed the SSD in the secondary drive location under the larger panel under the laptop. I do not have the hd bracket kit yet because it has been out of stock. Temporarily, I made a cardboard L bracket to stop the drive from shifting and keep it level.
In the BIOS, go into the hard drive section and use + to make the SSD the primary drive.
Now go into the boot menu and make the cdrom boot first.
Put in the Windows 7 recovery media disc and restart, at the ROG splash screen press escape to bring up the boot options, then select CDROM.
I chose to install to the whole hard drive, so no extra partitions.
You'll have a restart after files load, then have to put in the Driver & Utility disc, followed by a long wait, and then a bunch of restarts. You won't need to do anything for a while, the computer will boot to windows to install drivers and loads of crapware through the command line. Let it do its thing, it will eventually shutdown and not restart. Thats the end of the process, you can now restart and get the fresh out of the box experience with your SSD.
Tweaking
Removed programs: Just what I did, obviously keep what you want.
Asus live update
Asus data security manager
Asus mult
Asus smartlogon
Asus splendid - hung windows during uninstall/explorer crashed
Asus screensaver
Asus fastboot
Creative mediasource 5
Trend micro internet security - I should have uninstalled this first, it tries to stop you from uninstalling some programs.
Winflash - I already updated the bios
Now run Windows update to get new drivers and updates, or do this later if you want.
At this point I had 15.4GB of 37.2GB free.
Problem, after windows update, windows says wireless switch is off, but it is in the on position. Solution, Asus Wiresless conlose 3 is the problem, double click the tray icon and click the popup box to fix it. I'm going to uninstall it so it doesn't fight windows for control of wireless capability. Problem solved, wireless connects instantly on reboot.
As per suggestion at this forum post I also did the following:
Disable indexing
Disable defragmentation
Disable page file
Disable system resore
Disable hibernation
At this point I had 21.1GB of 37.2GB free.
Now I'm removing windows components I don't need.
Start > control panel > programs > Turn windows features on or off.
I'm unchecking the following because I don't feel i'll use them on my laptop. You may want to keep them.
Games
Internet Explorer 8 - Install firefox or another browser first, or you'll have no browser!
Media features - VLC and Itunes are what I use.
Remote differential compression - Don't think i need that.
Tablet PC components
Windows search
XPS services
Xps Viewer
Now I have 27.0GB of 37.2GB free.
A restart just took 36 seconds.
A shut down in 7, and boot to desktop from pressing power button in 28 seconds.
Any one have any suggestions, or feedback to further slim down my windows installation?
Hope someone finds this useful. -
I just started to get the very scary "display driver Nividia kernel something stopped working and has recovered" screen crashes. My mom's dell would get that now and then, and it progressively got the graphics quality in games down -
If you're overclocking and aren't seeing performance increases the game is GPU bound. Games like GTA 4 however will see framerate increases all the way up to 4.0Ghz Quad (on a desktop of course). -
-
I posted couple days ago about a BSOD I get whenever I use the sleep mode. Seems like now I sometimes gget a BSOD when the Screen saver comes up... I'm using the Nvidia 195.62 release, do you guys suggest trying the new beta ones or simply rma this thing?
-
Does the BestBuy model include the Windows recovery discs?
-
Cheers, -
How many memory slots are on the G72GX and what is the maximum amount of memory the motherboard can take?
-
3 slots and 12 gigs my friend BTW is anyone else getting worse performance when overclocking gfx card/processor? I OC my gtx 260 to 650/1024/1618 and my cpu by 15% and it sems that performance decreases. Using the latest drivers and bios, a bit confused. This does mean my OC is too high, right? and if so, what clocks are you guys using?
Anyone else hatee the sleep mode BSOD bug? -
-
1. Drivers files are not all cleaned up and are causing stability issues
2. The gpu in your machine is sub-par and needs to be replaced by asus
3. There is not sufficient cooling for the gpu which is causing stability problems.
I know we have ruled out the temperature stuff because you said you went back to stock clocks. If you are at your wits end and can't deal with it, I'd recommend contacting ASUS to get the issue resolved. Sorry you are having these sorts of issues. It definitely detracts from the enjoyment of a really good laptop.
Here is a link to the drivers I use.
All the best! -
Now this is getting really annoying. When at standard clocks or overclocking using systools/turbogear my 3dmark06 bench will be around 6700 3dmarks! need help with this, was wondering why my game performance wasnt up to scratch
