    ***BREAKING NEWS***

    8 April 2009, W90VP-A1 Review

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=370294

8 May 2009, From the News Wire Desk of Ken Lee, GenTech Computers.

It's OFFICIAL folks! The W90Vp is NOT limited to a mere 6GB of DDR2 memory!

Today, Ken Lee tested my Patriot 4GB memory modules, and is happy to report, a stable W90Vp with 8GB of DDR2 ram.

BUT, it gets better! Ken then placed one of the original Hynix 2GB modules in the third remaining memory slot, and BINGO..... a stable 10GB DDR2 W90Vp!

Ken further believes this notebook should easily handle 3 of these Patriot 4GB modules, so it appears the W90Vp is going be a 12GB DDR2 powerhouse!

Test Memory (found fully compatible & stable):

    Patriot Signature 4GB 200-Pin DDR2 SODIMM DDR2-800 (PC2-6400) Laptop Memory, Part#: PSD24G8002S

    *** UPDATE***

13 May 2009, Fellow NBR member and W90Vp-X1 owner, mkinasz, installed and tested 3 sticks of this Patriot memory..... and reports the following:

    (RE: page# 652, post# 6513 - Screenshots on page# 653, post# 6525)

Awaiting further testing and reporting from Ken Lee at GenTech, confirming 12GB compatibility and stability.

Nah, as much as respect this machine, I'm actually gonna stick with my current system for a while. What I'm waiting for is a 17 inch system with a Lucid Hydra chip and OC support for the CPU. I'm a big guy, but an 18.4 inch notebook would just be too big for me.

Anyways, this is all about you now. You said you are an owner, so let's see some CPUz, GPUz, HWmonitor screenshots and some test runs.

Btw, I just checked out Newegg.com, which has it on sale already and the price for the X1, for what it's worth, is phenomenal. $2200 basically for a T9600 + these cards...it's even a better bargain than the M17/Whitebook/W840 given the specs.

I never would have thought a high end Asus would have such a price per performance ratio.

Praying on a shipment from New Jersey- Newegg always gets it to me the following day if its from NJ (Which means I would have mine tomorrow if shipped today...) but wouldn't be upset if it was CA- it'll be soon enough!

Rofl, as awesome as that would've been (Considering my name is a reference to the band :D) No, I didn't. I was debating using my Newegg card, I would've got it for free- but they don't allow 2 forms of payment, so I just went with the old bank card. And after it was hit for that much, I was looking for any way to keep down costs.

    Hello enthusiasts!

I have been following these threads about the W90 for awhile. I admit, I am fanatical about this product like the rest of you :p. First of all, congrats to Striker for being an owner! I am jealous :p I have a gateway that I am aching to give away to my dad (it has a series of dead pixels on its screen, and the sound kinda broke...and being a musician, this is no good of course!), but I have been waiting patiently for the release of this beautiful laptop! I was going to get a Sony Vaio (I have to admit, the Sony Vaio's do look great), but the price and specs on the Asus are just so competitive, there is no way I would purchase the Sony now. Anyway, I have a few questions:

    1. Newegg lists the harddrive at 7200 RPM's, however Asus says that the harddrives are only at 5200 RPM's. I am wondering if Newegg was able to get 7200 RPM harddrives in their Asus builds, or if they had an editorial error on their site.
    2. Since I want either two 320 or 500GB harddrives (preferably at 7200 RPMS), which store can I go to for a more customized Asus W90?
    3. How long would I have to wait if I want this customization?

Thats sweeeeeeeeet. Can you tell me how loud/quiet the computer is when:

    1. Idle
    2. Browsing the web
    3. Watching streaming movies
    4. Playing games

Is the 7200 RPM harddrive any louder really than a 5200 RPM harddrive? Is it alot quicker?

Right now, my gateway is pretty quiet. I hear the fan, but its a whisper, it doesn't bother me at all. Of course when it gets hot (for example, too much spyware loading in the background) it does rise in volume.

I have this weird thing about opening things that are new, and making scratches. Plus I don't have experience with messing with laptops. I suppose I could wait another few weeks....it may be more cost effective too, right? Can this thing fit 8 gigs of ram? Probably not.

Yes, the W90 can house a max of 8gb of ram. If you plan on doing any upgrades, just wait for the A1. I have a "feeling" that the X1 + all the upgrades will be more expensive at the end. If you already have the spare parts, then that's another story and it would be more economical going for the X1.

Whats the A1...is that some sorta new model that isn't even out yet and is it 18.4"? I haven't heard about this model, and I have been researching for awhile now. And yeah, if you go here, http://usa.asus.com/news_show.aspx?id=13987 it says "houses up to 6 gigs of ram, as they have 3 dimm slots......

You probably are thinking to yourself "then why did you ask the question!" Well, because they also said the harddrives would only be 5200 RPMS, and now we know that is not true as well.

The chipset is spec'ed with a 8gb limit, but of course, the bios must also recognize it too. Even if the current bios limits ram to 6gb, there's really no reason why it should stay thay way for future bios releases.

I wouldn't trust everything Asus publishes on their website. They're known for many errors

I don't know what striker needs it for ;) but I do a lot of music midi sampling (ie. loading instruments into memory) where more gigs of ram would be desirable. Not only could I multitask easier with the sounds loaded, but I could load more instruments as well. Plus, I like when programs/games load faster (or is that something more cache dependent?)

The only advantage to waiting for after the NewEgg exclusive and other resellers getting the W90 is maybe just maybe the price will come down to what ASUS released as the MSRP for the X1 ($1999). Although I'm sure that most of the others will just get in line with NewEgg and soak in the extra cash while the W90 stands alone at the top of the price for performance mountain.

Although I couldn't wait, but mine is coming via slower shipping, so I will be later to the party.

Depends on the quality of the instruments. For example, my steinway piano library is somewhere around 20 gigabytes large. I had to condense it because my desktop computer right now only has 512 megs of ram :( So loading the full instrument is impossible. So, the downside of intense midi sampling using professional samples, is that you need the computer power to handle it! The upside is, you get a very realistic sounding composition :) Unless you had a very very trained ear, the average person would never know my piano compositions are actually midi, and not real performances.

Uh...yeah...that's one reason why I want this beast. I also wouldn't mind playing games once in awhile :)

Canadian here looking anyone with any information on resellers/custom builders here in Canada. Also, were all the variations of this model line released or just 1 so far? I would like to customize one to buy - preferably with a 17" screen and a Single Radeon 4870. One thing that shocks me is the 6 speakers and integrated sub... sound a bit excessive.

    Cheers!

i cant wait for some reviews and benchmarks, the only thing that worries me about this machine is the size, its bigger then my 9262 in very way (except weight, i think) and i thought that my Sager was big the benchmarks i think will decide it, shame that the 17inch doesnt have 4870x2 from what i heard is that it can only use 1 which is a shame

Or it could be smart that the extra space would allow a better cooling system.

    Fallingcat,

    Settle DOWN.

We can only guess the price and most of the specs of the X2. Repeatedly asking won't do you any favors.
