Thanks, BTW, should the Easy Flash from the bios be used in future instead of Winflash? I thought I read somwhere that Winflash is reliable

Anyone know what the VT-d does?

I installed the new version of PowerGear4 Hybrid 1.27 that was mentioned in a previous post. Now, everytime I right click on the battery symbol and select PowerGear4 Hybrid User Account Control asks me if I want to allow BatteryLife.exe to run (from an unknown publisher). Anyway to get this so that this does not come up everytime?

    Thanks

v 1.1.27 is apparently not optimized for the UL80vt yet. I tried it with the same results as you. That version wont remember saved settings either. If you want it to work properly, use v1.1.25.

I recommend WinFlash since it's easier and so far it hasn't caused me any problems when updating the BIOS. I've used it 4 times now to update the BIOS of my UL80VT from 205 to the current 213.

VT-d is a virtualization feature which enables input/output devices to access main memory in a virtualized environment efficiently. The only software I know that can use it currently is the Xen hypervisor which runs under Linux/Unix to enable high-performance I/O hardware sharing between virtual machines. Windows doesn't use it.

You can always disable UAC and you will never be bothered by any such popups ever again. When the popup appear, just click on "Change when these notifications appear" at the bottom of the popup and disable UAC by setting the slider to "Never notify".

I just got a ul80vt-A1 yesterday and my HDD makes a faint clicking noise (<30 dB) every second or so, even when no HDD activity is going on (including using that quickboot OS). It sounds like the head is moving every second. Battery life/ HDD r/w speeds are normal.

Is this happening to anyone else? Its starting to get annoying when theres no ambient noise.

That is usually a sign of pending hard drive failure, especially with Seagate drives.

I have exactly the same issue as you. Played around with the Nvidia settings, no option to adjust screen size.

Anyone else facing this issue? Could it be because I am using an HDMI 1.3 cable?

Totally not true. It depends on how loud the clicking is. If it's really loud, then it's a sign it is failing. Otherwise, this is normal. This particular issue has been well-documented. It has to do with the drive head parking every so often. Do a search on google and you'll find that it's a prevalent issue on most modern hdd and not specific to Seagate.

I don't need to search it, I review hard drives on a bi-weekly basis. Hard drives with parking issues are on the path to failure. You may be willing to trust one, but there would be no way I would. My drive is silent. All the drives in all my machines are silent. The only drives that I have that do this are either dead or almost there.

I would not accept this unit with a noisy drive. I would RMA it.

PS: Seagate is having the highest problems with failures right now and clicking almost always is the beginning. Doing a Google search of "Seagate clicking" will bring up page after page of unhappy people. I have no problems with any of my current Seagate drives, but I have had a couple flake out. I don't believe that Seagate's failure rate is much higher than the average for any manufacturer though.

Someone has created a guide on updating the Asus hybrid graphics driver for the UL30/50/80VT to the latest official 195.62 Nvidia notebook driver. I have confirmed that it works on my UL80VT, and I can get full CUDA support and DirectCompute. Hardware accelerated Flash HD movie support should also be enabled with this driver but I haven't tested it yet. The updated driver increased my 3DMark06 score from 3460 to 3558 after tweaking in the Nvidia control panel. Switchable graphics still work perfectly even after a reboot. This thing is the real deal.

    Here's the guide: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=5921798&postcount=2299

I ran inventor 2010 on mine before I returned it because of a faulty battery and it ran alright. If you're not doing huge drawings I think it should be fine. I mean it plays games from a few years ago fine and people did CAD back then too with similar powered graphics cards. Just get it from somewhere you can return it if it doesn't meet your standards and problem solved.

    Hi!

I'm a proud owner of a black UL50VT for 2 months now and I'm very happy with it.
It's just everything I needed: fantastic battery life, light-weight, powerful, complete (meaning it ships with DVD drive, to keep all options open), pretty good display size to comfortably watch movies and play some games.
Although I'm not so interested in NVidia Optimus technology because of my personal "user profile", I'm wondering if it shouldn't work on the UL50VT (with the official or somehow "hacked" drivers) since this machine has the same integrated (Intel 4500MHD) and discrete (NVidia G210 M) graphics as the UL50VF, which ships with NVidia Optimus.
Is there some hardware difference (motherboard, chipset?) which would really make the difference between these 2 machines?
Or is this just software related (so doable)?

I tried this out and it seems to work fine so far. I haven't tested the CUDA yet. However, I noticed that my power button and lid closing settings would not save after I changed them in power4gear. Most of the other settings seem to save though. I think the CUDA will come in handy though for video transcoding.

I've had that problem even before updating the hybrid graphics driver, so I think it's a problem with Power4Gear. I'm using Power4Gear Hybrid version 1.1.25 by the way. No matter how I set my power button and lid closing settings, once I close P4G and then open it up again to check, they all revert back to default settings but only for the Plugged in settings. For the Plugged in settings, the Lid close action always defaults to Hibernate, and the Power button action and Sleep button action always default to Sleep. The On battery settings save just fine. I've tried updating to P4G Hybrid v1.1.26 and it doesn't seem to have this problem, but I encounter other more serious problems so I went back to v.1.1.25.

I received my UL80vt yesterday and I have the same problem. But mine is 36% instead of 48%. Same symptoms, if I take out the power on the side, it turns off. I also cannot turn it on by battery power.

There are a couple of other mentions of this issue in this thread. I'm wondering if Asus has a bad batch of batteries?

I have tigerdirect.com sending me a new laptop and I'm sending this one back to them. Hopefully the new one has a good battery... or I'm gonna be really ticked off!!

Has anybody had a problem with a Bluetooth Dongle (External) that when they use a Bluetooth Tether (to a phone) and try to use a Bluetooth mouse as well, the mouse lags when the internet is accessed?

Is this a limitation of the bluetooth technology or my cheap adapter?

Is there a version of POwer4Gear that will work bug free and allow Turbo on/off without a reboot?

    Thanks for your help!

Just a heads up, Asus has released new Elan touchpad driver version 7.0.5.10 and new Power4Gear Hybrid version 1.1.30. Both are available at the Asus support download page. Elan touchpad driver is available at Notebook->Drivers->Touchpad while Power4Gear Hybrid is available at Notebook->Apps->P4GHybrid.

If anyone's willing to give those drivers a try, please post your experiences here for the masses. :)

When you connect to your TV, then under Personalize it will show two monitors, the Asus monitor and the TV monitor. You have to change the settings on the TV monitor and not on the Asus monitor.

How do you find these? Can you get them through the Asus site from the dropdowns etc, without knowing that they exist in advance? When I try, I get a listing asking me to enter the product, series, model.

To make Asus notebooks look professional and full-featured to prospective buyers. I think Asus' current global business plan is to get as many customers as they can with many diverse series and models with all kinds of features anybody could ever want. Unfortunately, they don't have enough resources to support existing customers since they're concentrating on gaining new customers instead of keeping existing customers happy. I'm sure their own technical support are tearing their hairs out over all those diverse series and models that they have to support. The same model can even have different hardware components inside. How is that not a logistical nightmare for any tech/driver/utility support staff? :)

Notebook->Apps->P4GHybrid means you enter Notebook in the product box, Apps in the series box, and P4GHybrid in the model box. I'm sorry if I wasn't being clear on this. I hope this is clear now. The new versions of the utilities and drivers are not available on the respective notebook's download page.

Asus support download page totally sucks and Asus rarely updates the download page for the individual notebooks. All the new versions of Asus drivers and utilities aren't synchronized with all the "old" notebook models that they have. It reflects Asus' current policy of churning out new notebook models but leaving the "old" models behind unsupported.

Thanks. I had tried that before, there are no options to adjust the screen size for the TV monitor (width/height/etc.. like there used to be on my W3J). No matter what resolution I select the screen is still too big and cut off equally from all sides.

For now I make up for it by zooming out a bit when watching a movie with MPC, I'll give it a try on another TV to see if I get the same issue.

Download the drivers from the asus website, you need the file called WiFi_Intel_1000_woc_Win7_32_1300107. My wireless was also very slow after I clean installed windows 7 ultimate, the driver fixed it.

Note, if anyone else has this problem. I solved it by uninstalling the Wireless Console 3 utility. Not really sure what that did, but appears that it is not needed.

Hey guys, just picked up a UL50VT from best buy, wiped the hard drive, and restored the activation file with ABR. Now what should I download from Asus? I got the nvidia driver working, also got Power4Gear Hybrid, not sure what else. Also how do I get the neat widget for Power4gear that shows Turbo33 active?

EDIT: I got wireless drivers also

So i got to try out this laptop today (the ul50vt at bestbuy)

A complaint i guess would have to be the 1 button mouse. its not horrible but it does feel a bit stiff. I think it would be easy to forget about after a week ( plus i use a usb mouse anyways). another would be the web cam. Not sure if it was just the program but it had really bad response time. the quality was alright, good enough to skype with, but the response time was just slowwww.

other then that I think Ill be picking up a ul80vt within a week. really sexy and light weight. love ittt.

Oh and some people say the screen is horrible. to me it looks just like any other laptop screen. maybe they are just use to desktop monitors?
or maybe im just use to my 2 year old hp laptop? who knows. I think its a nice laptop for $730.00

I would be considering the UL50VS but I feel Asus should be offering a choice between a low-wattage processor and a performance Core i5/i7 processor. I'd gladly sacrifice some battery life for some performance (and you can downclock the processor, too, if you don't need it).

Additionally, 1366x768 resolution on a 15" computer is pretty yucky. I'd like to see a 1600x900 resolution display on the UL50 series.

Otherwise, looks like a fantastic computer for the traveling student or professional.

The mouse has two buttons, it just looks like one. Press on the left side to left-click or right side to right-click. You can also tap the touchpad for left-click and tap with 3 fingers for right-click.

You need Power4Gear Hybrid to control Turbo33, and I believe you need to install the ATKACPI driver and ATK Generic Function Service Utility first before Power4Gear Hybrid. The ATK Hotkey Utility is also recommended to get the Fn keys to work, and I think the Keyboard Filter Device Utility is also needed.

I believe the most current version of Power4Gear is 1.1.30. When I installed it, the Turbo33 popped up by itself. Is this the version you installed? If not, you'll have to uninstall the current version and reinstall.

I tried that and even went as far as updating my BIOS to 213 and reinstalling the latest utility version and still no sign of Turbo33 popping up on the Power4Gear. Man this is irritating me and I even emailed the technical group but still no response.

I was informed that i can buy the silver UL80VT so the sony s i was thinking before is past.
From what i read, there are built quality issues with noises etc. Was it a problematic review unit or other owners have them?
Also the Windows 7 DVD that comes with UL80VT, contains the "clean" 7 or 7 with the bloatware?
I hope not regret it :)
