Thanks for the answer. I downloaded 178.13 WHQL driver from laptopvideo2go. I tried to install it but got this error about driver being incompatible. Any ideas?

Probably you didn't use the modded inf. Read the documentation near the driver on the lv2g website.

I just took video driver up to 175.80, seems it was regarded as a stable version on laptopvideo2go. Everything works as expected and the Asus seems a bit faster but I haven't really tested yet.

I am trying to use Cybertech PowerDirector video editing software on AVCHD files made on a Canon HD100 SDHC camera. On playback, the CPU indicators in task manager both go to 100% and stay there while I get very choppy playback. Isn't the 9500M GS video card supposed to have some special feature to play back these files? If so, it seems like the software isn't aware that it can offload the work to the GPU.

    Any thoughts?

I'm not sure if those temps are normal for your type of computer, other owners should tell. Depending on the GPU series/type and on the cooling capabilities of the notebook, they may be normal.

If the computer is not very new, you could try cleaning the dust from the fan and heat radiator.

Sure, since you're posting on this lounge. Perhaps a more correct and direct way to phrase my previous message would be "I don't know what the typical GPU temps are on this notebook."

I think those temps are still in the "ok" range. Keep in mind that the 9500M GS GPU is based on the 80nm technology, so it isn't as cool nor efficient compared to other 65nm GPUs such as the 9600. If your temps get over 100C during gaming, then maybe it's time your cooling system needs thorough cleaning and/or time to invest in a cooling pad. :)

Does anyone know if the GPU can be upgraded in this notebook? If so, what slot type is it (MXM II/III, etc)?

The standard answer is no, GPU can't be upgraded (for reasons, see theFAQ in the ASUS Info Booth). The nuanced answer is that, depending on the model, heatsink layout, etc., it may be remotely possible, but difficult enough to make it not worth the effort in general.

Hey there, I'm wondering if these XP drivers will work for the ASUS M51VA model?

It's definately not possible. It's 'integrated' into mainboard. Not MXM.

I'm considering buying this laptop, and just read through all 32 pages of this post. Nice to see people have put forth the effort to get XP running, I am not a big fan of Vista and its bugs and incompatibilities.

However I've not seen one mention of Linux, mainly Ubuntu. Has anyone installed Ubuntu on this unit? I would want to dual boot Ubuntu/XP or Ubuntu/Vista, and want to see if anyone has had success with Ubuntu.

    Cheers.

Reckster Don't know about Ubuntu but I too was a Vista skeptic. However, I'm running Vista (upgraded the supplied version to Ultimate) and I'm really into it now. Apart from a peculiarity in installing the webcam software (see my fix posted here), I have had zero issues with Vista.

Hey Gandalf, well I'd still need to use Ubuntu mostly as I'm a Linux enthusiast, it's all good I checked a few places and people had success apparently with it.

Well, I went to my Asus supplier and of course this model is suddenly no longer available. I wonder what the 'replacement' next up laptop is for it..

Try newegg .com Pick laptops at the top and then narrow search to Asus at the left (stupid forum won't let me post the link cos I don't have 15 posts - sigh!)

There are over 30 laptops in the list and many $1200ish ones that look very similar to the M51Sn hardware-wise.

Rekster I think you're going to be happy with it. It's a great compromise between power and portability. I bought the 9 cell battery and carry the 6 cell with me, that way I always have around 5 hrs of on-the-go computing with me.

    Graphics performance is outstanding.

    Hi,
I got my Asus M51Sn, two months ago and I started to realise when I plug in my internet wire to the laptop..It doesnt connect to the internet..
The reason why I finally noticed this is because I always use wireless...Which leads me to my second question, I was at my lecture this morning and I tried to connect to the schools internet but it said "no networks found". It doesnt usually do this and now I am at home and it still says no network found..

Anyone know why its doing this?

I'm typing this on my home desktop

The most obvious thing to check if wireless isn't working is the little black switch on the front just left of center; it needs to be slid to the on (left) position.

If you are not getting the connection on the wired internet, is the NIC enabled in the system?

A friend of mine is trying to reformat his M15Sn due to a corrupted file in his vista 32-bit OS files. From him,

" When i tried running any program IE firefox LOL my computer would just lock up and i could n't do anything even get into the alt cntrl delete menu

so i tried restoring it to like 3 days ago and i would get an error that said Unable to restore corrupt file in VistaOS(C :)

i went ot use the recovery disk and i found out i don't have a driver cd"

So apparently he needs a driver CD to complete the recovery/OS installation. What are his options?

lol, "in my laptop cases theres a mini compartment i never opened and there it was"

    Nevermind now.

Unfortunately, it isn't anywhere easy to get at. I pulled one apart at Christmas. From memory, it is on top of the motherboard underneath the palm rest, or underneath the motherboard on the opposite side to the drive. In either case, you need to dismantle the whole thing to get at it.
