You'd have to ask the Asus resellers for the exact amount. I'd say around $150.

I'm looking to purchase the m51sn-b1 this summer. how are the build quality and materials? on notebookcheck they were fairly critical of the touchpad. do any of you find the touchpad to be in need of improvement?

One quick (and maybe stupid, but I don't care :) ) question:
I'm going to pick up my new M51Sn today (hopefully) and I've decided to crap Vista Home premium and install XP Pro insted. Can I expect any Driver-related problems with this switch? Or is it all clear sailing?

You shouldn't have any problems with XP. It should be a smooth install.

    okay, now I'm puzzled :S
It seems that there are no specific XP Drivers at all on ASUSTek's homepage? Am I being stupid, or don't I need some drivers for the M51 to run XP with all the stuff in it?

You can use original drivers CD to install most of the drivers and utility, here is the list of the drivers you'll need to download:

    VGA:
    http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=17739

    Realtek HD Audio Driver:
    ftp://202.65.194.211/pc/audio/WDM_R189.exe
Note: For XP with SP3 it's required to download KB835221 hotfix otherwise the Audio will not work, thanks to thadeej for the information.

Well you'd need the SATA drivers, there's an entire wealth of guides out there on that, I'm sure. Or put your HDD into compatibility mode from the BIOS if you have such an option.

This one went straight to the Info Booth. Thanks. :)

M'kay!?! It's just, when I boot up, with the XP install cd in, it comes to a point, where I can chose to either; 1) Install windows XP, 2) Repeare windows XP or 3) Quit the installer. I chose to Install Win XP, with the thing in mind to format the C drive. But i just get the anouncment that there are no Harddrives pressent in my computer. Press F3 to quit. Is it all really just F6 to install second part drivers?

    You have 2 choices:
1: Go to the BIOS> advanced settings and change the IDE controller from Enhance to Compatible, Press F10 to save the settings and exit.

2: Slipstream your Windows XP CD with SATA driver.

No. Please look up the SATA slipstreaming guides. But try option 1) first it's the easiest.

Is it possible to replace the Intel Core 2 Duo T5550 1.83GHz CPU in an M51Sn-B1 with a T8300 or T9300?
I've ordered an M51Sn-B1 (from Canada, but a friend is bringing it to the UK next week) and I thought this might be something to consider in the future, to speed up architectural rendering and maybe to improve game play (e.g. this 'Crysis' which looks pretty cool).

Any thoughts on whether this upgrade is possible/straightforward/worthwhile?
    Thanks

Yes, you can easily upgrade the CPU, however, you will void your warranty if you do.

Simply because Asus doesn't advertise their laptops as heavily as Dell or Sony.

What emporiumboutique said is correct. Popularity isn't always the case. Over the years I've owned two Toshiba notebooks, a Dell, and an Acer laptop, recently though I decided to purchase an ASUS notebook and so far it has impressed me in every aspect in comparison to all my previous machines.

Hi all ASUS M51Sn fans :)

I still have some small problems with mine, after I installed XP. First of all, I still can't get the Ethernet Controller driver to work. I've installed all the drives for the CD's that came with the notebook, and all the drivers that is listed on page 10 or 11 of this thread.

Also the HD Audio Bus controller is not installed and there is a Unknown Divece whice is missing a driver, and I have no Idea what it is. The last thing is that I'm getting this failure notice, when ever I reboot or start up my notebook that the "LMGRD has preformed an error and will be closed. There are some files that list the error information, but I'm not skilled enough to decifer it. there are these two

    1) MANIFEST:

I've installed XP on my notebook. Don't care much for Vista. I have my WLAN up and running. No problem there, but to access my home network, I need to first connect through the LAN cable, but nothing happens when I plug it in. I can see on the Network places on my notebook, that the driver for the card itself is installed and working, but the Ethernet-controller is marked with a '!' so thats the problem. And I've been searhing the net for a driver, but noting seems to work.

Also, I have this unknown divice with the unit-id number: ACPI\IFX0102\4&3AA5AEAA&0

What driver do I need for this thing? Have tried some drivers, but none work.

Whats wrong with me? I used to be good at finding and solving driver problems :(

Heh actually you didn't but I edited it myself. The problem was in the long lines from the error report copy-paste (I broke two of them in several places, marked the places with ---)

oh, sorry... On my screen, it was OK, when I finished editing it...

Its funny though. This thread has somewhat stoped being a preformence review and just a long thread of troubleshooting and help :) But its nice to keep it all gathered here, so its easy to find for other people, if they end up in the same problems with this notebook...

And thanks for all the help!

I think it's actually turning into an owner's lounge. Which wouldn't be so bad, actually, having it all in one place. I might contact the OP and see if he agrees to change this from "review" to "review/owner's lounge".

The UAA is built-in in the new Realtec driver and work with XP SP1 and SP2, however, if you have SP3 installed you'll need to install KB835221 hotfix from Microsoft (thanks to thadeej ).

Hey guys, I got this system about 3 weeks ago. Ive got some good games on it, but the heat its producing is incredible. In the very beginning of this thread, in the review part of it, they show some overclocked results. I would be curious to find out what the internal temperature was during that.

Playing COD4, with slight overclock at 517/1034/402 I reached a peak temperature of 93C and average of 89

Isnt that too hot? I even have a cooling fan under..
