To overclock your CPU, use SetFSB

I agree that the TV tuner should be included for US models as well, but I guess it's up to the product managers in Taiwan that decides what features are included in what models. Maybe they didn't see a large enough market for TV tuners in North America?

I overclocked my GPU to 560/460. I could probably go a bit higher, but I prefer not to take the risk :p

    Maybe this can help?

There is no exterior paint on the M50 notebook. The color is infused with the material, so you shouldn't worry about that.

I'm not too savvy with Vista... :( maybe someone else can help with the language bar issue?

Just replaced the Seagate Momentus 5400.4 that came in my Asus M50Sv with a new Hitachi Travelstar 5K320, and I couldn't be happier. No constant ping pong head parking with this drive; highly recommend replacement for the garbage 5400.4.

Actually, I never noticed any "ping pong" sound with the seagate drive... however, i too, also upgraded my hard drive simply because i needed more space :)

I just ordered 4 gigs of RAM for my M50Sv and I have a question.

Will XP see the new added RAM and configure itself accordingly, or do I have to do something with the OS, like adjust the page file or something?

    Don't you need a 64bit OS to see 4gb?

need 64 bit os to see more then 3.x gigs of 4gb installed, potentially even to see the full 3gb depending on video ram arrangement. you also might have issues dependent on which grade of xp you use. i seem to recall home edition not supporting as much as compared to pro, but i might be thinking number of processor cores <shrugs> .

of course given that the processor in use is 32 bit native with 64 bit extensions the question is "is the performance hit on the cpu side worth the extra 768-512 mb of usable ram from moving to 4gb on an x64 platform from 4gb on an x32 platform?". the typical answer is no, unless you are handling database apps or something with a poor requirement to reward ratio like supreme commander - at least on intel x32 chips. with amd x64 there's no real reason to skip the extra ram, unless your apps won't cope with 64 bit os environment, or you cant get 64 bit drivers for xp , because you are already losing about 20% relative performance to a comparable intel chip(clock and cache wise anyway).

Xp 32bit will only see 3gb, or 3.2gb at most. 32bit limitations. Don't have to adjust any software settings when you install ram. (of course I recommend going to vista 64bit. I did after putting 4gb ram. no regrets, very stable system and performing better than xp sp3)

Right-click on your taskbar and select the Toolbar option. That should reveal the secondary menu with the Language bar option.

My Start Direct Media software application hotkeys button just stop working and I tap the multimedia touchpad mode button also and can't seem to get it to worked. And the Ambient Light sensor issue,i press FN+A to enable or disable it.But the Auto Light sensor doesn't show up on the monitor but it only show the manually adjustment for the brightness up and down ,i can't seem to switch it back to the automatic adjust of the display panel to provide better viewing.I can't seem to solve the problem and nothing worked.
Any help from others on this subject would be great lol

(I've read through as much of this thread as I can, but didn't see it..)

Can anyone provide links to Windows XP x64 drivers for the M50SV, if anyone has done this yet? I need to run Windows XP x64 or Windows Server 2003 x64 for work.

I've got the nVidia GeForce drivers for xp x64 (175.16_geforce_winxp_64bit_english_whql.exe) but am still searching for the others. Any help is appreciated, thanks!

Avoid XP x64 at all costs. Too many incompatibility issues and very poor drivers (at least for the ones you're able to find). Stick with Vista 64bit if you really need a 64bit OS.

I think I'm gonna upgrade to vid drivers 175.80 and I was wondering if anybody had problems with this version (or recommends it) and also I was wondering if there is anything I should know, like settings that it changes afterwards that I have to change back, or something like that...

I installed the 175.80 drivers on mine with no issues at all. I had been getting driver errors before the update, but now that they are installed, I have no issues. I also had to change no settings, but I was using it with settings out of the box.

So I was unable to find anything about this, but I did not look over all 138 pages lol.

I just bought my A1 a few weeks ago and am wondering if there is a way to turn off the track pad media controls?

I hate hitting anywhere close to the mode button and having it activate while surfing the internet.

Can I uninstall it and still have the finger scroll work along with the double tap?

Seems it is the only problem I have with this laptop. Vista runs amazing with SP1! Way better than XP :)

You can just disable Duel Mode in your mouse settings. That way when you tap MODE on the touchpad, it won't activate the multimedia controls.

Well, I've been having a problem running XP on this notebook. When I boot up the desktop background loads, and the pointer is there, but nothing else, no bar, no icons, no nothing. I suspect the Asus Security Manager software that's installed along with the fingerprint driver.

So I'm reinstalling Vista again. I'll see if I can get the fingerprint driver installed without the Asus security software later on with another XP install.

Thanks, I'll give Vista x64 a shot. Most of my softare problems are related to moving from XP to Vista in general, not only 32 to 64 bit. But I will need 64 bit to address the full 4gb for my VMware virtual machines. I think thats going to be the best way forward for now.

I'm using XP and my graphics driver is 174.31. I did try the soft mod with various quadro drivers, but all of them produced lower 3dmark06 scores (from 100-800 points lower). IMO, if you intend to game, stick with geforce drivers. quadro drivers are only better when you use autocad or maya etc.

I've heard this sound many times and just thought it was normal, but now that I've checked, after less than a month's use, my load cycle count is at 6000+, which has be a little worried. Buying a new harddrive down the road is always an option, but it would be nice to buy non-defective products in an original purchase...

Hi guys, I have a question. I want to activate finger print scanner in my M50sv-A1. But I cannot find it in my BIOS. the option is just not there. I check my BIOS version with the one in the manual, it was 2.59 (if I remembered it correctly) but the BIOS security option is different.
So, is there any other way to activate it?
    thanks alot..
I took this picture from the manual. My BIOS doesn't have the option in the red circle.

So, I'm having one hell of a time trying to get Bluetooth devices to actually connect to my laptop. Is there anything special I need to do?

Everything seems to be enabled, but when I try to connect any sort of device it just sends me the same error 'Unable to detect the remote device."

I've already tried reinstalling the drivers to no avail.

Hi, i'm from Indonesia and looking forward for buying Asus M50Sv here. I have checked the specs but somewhat i'm confused with many different specs list on each shop/web in Indonesia i read.

The most confusing part is on GPU, which on Asus Indonesia website they wrote NVidia GeForce 9500M G, 512MB, then i read on other retailer they wrote NVidia GeForce 9500M GS, 512MB Dedicated, and the other one wrote NVidia GeForce 9500M GS, 512MB Shared.

Which one's the right GPU? As i read on Google and here, M50Sv has some variant like M50Sv-A1 and M50Sv-B1. But here, the leaflet, or Asus's site, or even the retailer didn't specify the A1 or B1. They just include a 'series number' (I think), M50Sv25DPM, that when i Google it returns nothing informative.

I'm still waiting from the retailer here to inform me when the stock is available around this week or next week. And i'm going to try to check the real one.

If the reality that Asus Indonesia sells the 9500 G one, i think i'll change my mind and i'll buy G1S anyway. Because G1S here sold cheaper than M50Sv which G1S cost $1599 and M50Sv cost $1669 (They said the price will be raised to $1749 though.. ugh..)

    Please respond.. :) Thanks

Hello GiLaNg and Fr4nkly! Welcome to notebookreview!

The 9500m GS in the M50Sv has 512mb dedicated video memory as Fr4nkly mentioned.
Is the 70-80C temperatures at idle or were you gaming? My Idle temp for the GPU is 63C.

I was just wondering if any of you guys know how to get better battery life out of this notebook besides using power4gear and the typical lower brightness of screen kind of methods. (I'm looking for new kind of battery software or new battery in general). I'd love to find a way to get 3+ hours out of this thing while at least browsing web .

If it is impossible (i have the 6 cell bat) it's still a great laptop! I am in college and was just thinking it would be nice to be able to use this off the charger for a while longer.

Is anyone having an issue of dvds having a hard time resuming play when it is paused and the lid is closed. I do this when my wife talks to me, and I want to listen, but when I lift the screen and go back to the movie, it just sits there frozen.

A 9 cell is available, and with minimizing the power hungry item, and programs, you should be able to get what you want out of it.

Hey guys =) I am a proud owner of the M50sv-A1. Well sort of.. Mine is still with my cousin in michigan and i am here in the philippines. So i am yet to enjoy this neat laptop. Well anyways.. I love to google around and compare the specs of different laptop. I have also read the whole thread so that just in case i have a problem, i know where to look =) To continue.. I was googling around for better deals available for the M50sv and then i stumbled upon this very very rare item... It's a M50MV. Yes you heard me.. and it has a 9600m GS on it.. can anyone confirm this? Here's the link below

Hi Gilang, I'm also in Indonesia. The Asus m50 has a 9500 512mb dedicated gddr2. Your price seems high. I bought mine in ratu plaza for 14.5jt rupiah. let me know if you want the store name and number. there is only one type of asus m50 sold here, none of the variants you see available in the other countries.

Hi, is your temps on load or idle? mind idles at 57 and full load with slight overclock at 78-84. using drivers 177.41 with vista 64 bit, pretty happy with it!

Hey, I just got my new A1 in the mail today! I'm really enjoying it (the cpu is 4-5times better than my old desktop's). However when I was doing the initial setup, for some reason the fingerprint reader had an error and couldn't start the wizard. I had to click cancel, but now I cannot find an option to configure the fingerprint reader at all! I've searched through device manager and administrative tools but cannot find anything to help me. If anybody knows how to solve this, I would really appreciate it!

    Thanks in advance!
