that's because Ambient Light Sensor was turned on by default and it's adjusting brightness automatically, one customer call me with the same concern and I told him just press FN+A to turn off ALS so he can adjust brightness manually.

Ok, that's great to know. Thanks so much.

If a person manually sets a screen to brighter than normal. I assume that would shorten battery discharge time, but would it cause damage to the screen over time?

Thanks GenTechPC. If you have time you can made a little review for the Asus A7K-A1. And also I have a question about upgrading HD in Asus Series models not barebones. For example if I buy a Asus F3s and choose the 200GB HD (extra $145). Do I get original and that new HD or just the new HD?

Geared2play.com is right with Cnet. They just focus in the same laptops companies. But I was looking in Computer Shopper that are from the same family and they write better reviews. And in the Top Game Notebooks CShopper had the Asus G1s. The problem with Cnet Review is that they are become 100% Ads more than information. The only part from them that I still visit everyday are the Download & News sections.

I enjoyed your video review of the Asus M51Sn-A1 in the Important Threads in "Sticky: The Asus Info Booth." I'll keep watching for your M50SV-A1 review.

No it won't. Screens are designed to be able to run full time on max brightness. Of course it might shorten the life of the backlight etc. but I don't think that the LCD will be the first thing to go on a notebook. :) i.e. it's very likely other things will break down earlier that will make the computer unusable.

I'm almost buying this notebook, I've been looking for at least a year for a new notebook, and this just might be the one.

I wanted to see a few games: Crysis and Call of Duty 4 specifically.

ps. This review was much better than the one made by EXcaliberPC ;)

    Hey Ken--

Have you seen any 3DMARK06 benchmarks for the Sager 2092? I'm just wondering how the M50SV-A1 compares to that notebook. Also, is the WXGA+ 1440 x 900 display backlit? Are all WXGA+ displays backlit?

    Thanks,

    Jerry

Thanks, I am working on the Crysis game video right now, will upload it soon. :)

Hi Jerry, no I have not seen 3DMark06 benchmarks on Sager notebooks.
Yes all LCD display are backlit.

The M50SV-A1 has higher resolution 1440x900 compare to Sager 2092 1280x800, higher isn't always better it depends on if you preffered better readability or more work space.

9500M GS on M50SV is a newer revision of 8600M GT, both perform about the same.

best buy has a M50Sv on their website. it is a M50Sv-X2. i cant find any information on it other than what is on the best buy website. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage...m50sv&lp=1&type=product&cp=1&id=1202650467562 the only thing i can find different than the M50Sv-A1 is the max resolution of 1280 x 800 instead of 1440x900 that i see on most spec sheets for the M50Sv series. does anyone know why or is best buy's site mistaken. also newegg has the 1280x800 spec on the A1 version. i dont want to make the purchase without being sure of what im getting. i want to use best buy so i can take advantage of the rewards system and 0 interest with their credit card.

From what I've read (I'm not in the US) Best Buy models are often toned down in configuration, like cheaper screens, less RAM, less warranty, no accessories like mouse and carrying case. So the best thing is to stay away unless you really NEED that price difference.

Hey guys! I'm new here and found this thread on Google and since I'm a nerd and looking into buying a laptop sometime this week, I registered here because I've been reading threads all day and had some questions.

So is there a XP driver package anyone has megaupload/rapidshare?

Because I'm buying this laptop once I get home tonight but want to make %100 sure I can get the XP drivers. I'll be getting the Vista32 version but upgrading to a 200gb hdd for XP the day it comes, If the drivers are available that is... If not, I probably won't buy it.

Or at least share with us how you got the Vista drivers to work with XP?

Crysis looks and plays amazing from the video posted on this review, and we're talking about a Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 9500M GS (512MB dedicated VRAM) which is no 8700GT with or 8800GTX ect... so for me this is impressive. I know the shaders were placed on low and other things on low but for the most part everything else was set on Med and the outcome once again from the video for me is more than fine b/c it played GREAT. This laptop's price point for what you get is also great not to mention the make (Asus) and the construction of the unit (solid) with the new In-Mold Roller Technology --basically in my opinion this is an all around perfect laptop period WITHOUT SPENDING THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS OF DINERO.

I'm really thinking about canceling my Dell XPS M1530 order for this laptop. However, it appears that only XoticPC.com offer the 9cell battery and its a steep price IMO for it. I would rather just have the 9 cell instead of the 6 cell and 9 cell.

When can we expect the benchmarks on the 9 cell battery? I've also noticed that the system is already 6.5 lbs with just the 6 cell. Having the extended battery would most likely push it to 7 lbs.

Agreed. I'm very close to buying this system in the next couple of weeks (if not the F8Sn-C1) and really only want the 9-cell battery as opposed to benig forced to buy it in addition to the 6-cell I'd likely never use. If I can eke 3.5 hours of life out of the 9-cell, I'd be content with that one alone

    Hey thanks a lot Ken!

Which hardware doesn't work? Any ports not function on XP? Like the combo port?

I just finished my order on NewEgg.com! :p

If I buy the 9 cell battery, will it stick out or is it the same size/flush with the chassis?

the 9 cell sticks out but doesn't add any leverage to the system. The 9 cell is also pictured in one of the reviews.

My Dell XPS m1530 just got shipped today. Hopefully someone can shed some light on the extended battery before my return window.

It's been my experience that Asus does a below-average job at handling heat in their notebooks. You noted this was much better than the G1s.. but could you please take some actual temperature readings from the cpu and gpu in idle and then taxed.. maybe after prolonged usage? I would appreciate that. Also can you comment on the screen? Who makes it? Evenly lit.. any bleeding? Thank you :)

This is not entirely true. NP2092 is offered with many different screen resolutions, including a higher WSXGA+ screen.

I have to disagree with that statement. Asus does a phenomenal job managing heat in their notebooks. Proof is in the fact they they have never put out a notebook that has overheating issues. I think what you were trying to say is "asus is known for manufacturing notebooks with materials that have a tendency to absorb vented heat better then the competitors". They are also know to manufacture notebooks with only one fan while manu competitors would use two. they are not saving money on a single fan they are helping people hear less noise and ensuring that the notebook radiator is easy to clean as oposed to notebooks with dual fans.

Asus laptops run hot.. the only laptop I have worked with, personally, that has run hotter was my Acer, and it did have overheating issues. All you have to do is go at look at reviews of Asus laptop and see how consistently reviews state how much they heat and push out uncomfortable levels of heat, in many cases. That's one thing I've taken note in all reviews, if one thing that is most consistent is that this is almost always made a point. I'm still wondering if this one is really any better. Would appreciate if someone could post temps :)

    Hi Guys...
    First post here.
Sorry for the english cause i'm italian and i'm writing from Treviso, near Venice.
I've just bought an Asus M50sv-ap025c with the same cpu, the same graphic card and the same hard disk: the only difference is about the lcd, which supports only a 1280x800 resolution... can I play games in the same way of the notebook reviewed here?
So... i chose this notebook because i want both a gaming notebook both a general use notebook but i didnt want to spend too much.
The matter is: i want to play also Crysis in the best way possible with this notebook, maybe it's crazy but i saw that crysis is playable decently with a 8600gt, so why cant I play crysis with an identic gpu?
Thanks to the staff because this is the unique site i found with a video in which Crysis is played with a 9500m gs...
Err... i still haven't seen the video yet because at the moment i've not an adsl connection (the adsl wire does'n arrive in this godamned city) but i understood that the settings are more or less on medium... is it true?
Can someone report all the graphic settings on which Crysis was played in the video?
Other question... i've noticed in the review of the m51sn that the notebook performs a benchmark 100 points higher than the m50sv... how could it be if the gpu is the same and the m50sn has a slower cpu (1,66ghz vs 2,5ghz?).
I'm not an expert so can someone explain me the reason?

And what is the best-compromized configuration (also with few fps) to play Crysis with this notebook?
I know people can play also at medium with an 8600gt (maybe high if the card is overclocked or with modded-driver) but does this depend by the operative system? Can i play better if I downgrade the o.s.?

I don't need to play crysis max or medium/high detail... but i will very happy if i could play at least Assassin's Creed or Call of Duty 4 on high setting (maybe with shadows off and with disactivated filters)... what do you say about it? Is it possible?

    Thx for the informations!!

    P.S.
Can someone post a link with the best 9500mgs driver for gaming (also modded driver)... and what about overclocking the card automatically with N-tune? Do i risk to damage the notebook or is it sure?

Sorry me, but i want to play in the best way possible with this notebook (at least game as portal, F.E.A.R., assassin's Creed at max settings, what about?)
... at the other hand i don't want the notebook to explode [lol]

FullMetal, here are the settings that were used for Crysis in the video:

    Resolution: 1280x720
    Anti-Aliasing: Off
    Texture Quality: Medium
    Objects Quality: Medium
    Shadows Quality: Medium
    Physics Quality: Low
    Shaders Quality: Low
    Volumetric Effects Quality: Low
    Game Effects Quality: Low
    Postprocessing Quality: Medium
    Particles Quality: Medium
    Water Quality: Medium
    Sound Quality: Medium

Overall, it looks OK. About as good as an early Xbox 360 game. The framerate is kind of jerky though. It seemed to hover around 18-20fps. It definitely looks playable, but don't expect to be blown away by the graphics.

Call of Duty 4 looks a lot better, but the frame rate is not much better than in Crysis. It looks very close to the Xbox 360 version, except the frame rate is much lower.

Anyway, I just ordered the M50SV-A1 today and can't wait to get it. I know I won't be able to play newer games at max settings with it, but there are a lot of older PC games that I would like to check out. I've been a console gamer exclusively all of my life because, well, I love consoles, but also because I've never owned a PC that could run games worth crap. But now I will finally own a PC that is capable of playing decent games.

I too don't understand how the M51SN received a higher benchmark than the M50SV. They have the exact same graphics card, yet the processor in the M50SV is a lot faster. It doesn't make any sense to me. Perhaps someone else can chime in on this...

When i ran 3dmark06 i got a score of 3800 on m50sv. The reason the score was higher probably has something to do with background apps. I disabled all i can think of.
on m51 i got over 3600 points. So the scores are about the same. it all depends on the reviewer and the environment. On paper both units score about the same.

    Thanks a bunch...
Actually i think the settings are not bad at all!
    What about using modded driver?
    Can you obtain some more?
And can someone explain me how overclock the gpu a bit whitout making the notebook blow up?

Anyway, the framerate, i think, is very slow generally speaking, i Hope F.E.A.R. does'nt play so slow, and also Assassin's Creed... is vista the responable of the slow framerate? Could someone make light on it?

In addiction: check out this videos!

This is about Crysis, played with an 8600m gt, which has the same specifications of the 9500m gs... the operative system is Vista but aren't the fps more than 15? Can someone control it and also the graphic setting (if it's written)? Caus I can't see the video here! :(

    Check this too, please...

How can it be with everything on high? (and if it's directx 10 it should be played on Vista, isnt it?)

And then CoD4 and Fear with details on High and Assassin's Creed with High Details and Resolutions...
So: explain me... Why can't I play Bioshock, Cod4, Crysis, Fear and Assassin's Creed at this level with the same framerate if I've not only the same gpu (8600gt = 9500gs) but a better Notebook???
    Is Vista the problem??
Plz say me that is not true because i don't want to do the downgrade... plz

    P.S.
D'you confirm that the m50sv-ap025c is the same of the m50sv-a1 exept for the screen resolution?

Thanks a lot to every body
The site is awesome and very complete!

performance wise it's close but G2S-B2 has GDDR3 video RAM, still faster than 9500M GS 512MB DDR2 but not much.

but the scores in 3dmark are almost the same. Infact m50sv as i tested got 3800 points. why is the 8600gt 256mb ddr3 better then 9500gs 512mb ddr2 when 9500 scored Just a tad bit higher. if anything i would say they are comparble video cards wouldnt you?
