@asusk42ja the increased temps in linux are probably due to GPU power management settings. If you're using the default radeon driver:
    X.Org Wiki - radeonBuildHowTo

If you use the proprietary ATI fglrx driver, you'll need to configure those power settings in the ATI fglrx-control app (like catalyst control center in windows).

@ALLurGroceries...I don't hav ny increased temp issue on my linux installation cos i don't use the GUI at all...i do my work from command line...so i don't think i'll need any graphics drivers or sound or anything at all as a matter of fact, but i've worked on other systems (which means not just asus with radeon) that had heating issues and most of da time it'll be due to some silly stupid unwanted service(s) burning up the battery and processor...I suggested the tool as a common solution for all n not for just 'radeon' lappys....

But heyy THANKS for the site link, seems to be very informative..will be very useful for me in the future...Peace...

@asusk42ja actually your system will run at max gpu clock speed unless you tweak the clock setting, regardless of whether the GPU is in use or not. Good luck. X.Org Wiki - radeonBuildHowTo

Umm...OK buddy... I haven't tried those methods cos i've never felt like there's any need... outta curiosity lemme ask you what bout systems that doesn't have this so called 'Radeon' or has an inbuilt GPU like the Intel HM55 for instance and face heating issues...??

    @asusk42ja

ATI GPUs will stay on their maximum clock setting by default, so that's why you have to clock it down manually, in windows this is done automatically by the driver. Also if you install the fglrx driver it normally clocks down the card.

For system with integrated graphics, the same does not apply, a heat issue would be unrelated to the graphics processor, and might be due to ACPI problems with fan speeds or something else, like high CPU usage. It could also be from not having the cpu frequency scaling modules loaded or using the high performance governor instead of ondemand or powersave.

That's exactly what I told before...It needn't necessary be always graphics driver issue...Cos I'm NOT facing any heating issues with mine whereas someone else here is having issues and we all use the same drivers...So it has to be the background processes using more resources...

Have you tried installing any Linux in it? I tried installing debian 6.0.1 and ubuntu 10.10 but I can't seem to make the wifi work. What drivers did you used?

    Thanks..

Intel Wireless 1000 bgn, i used iwlwifi drivers from Intel® Wireless WiFi Link drivers for Linux*.

i copied the iwlwifi 1000 ucode in /lib/firmware and restarted the pc. I was able to see the wireless networks available, but i can't connect, authentication window keeps on popping and i'm sure that i have the correct password.

i wonder if you encountered the same thing.

@netxph are you on ubuntu or debian now? It sounds like you have the driver and firmware set up fine, but you have some sort of authentication/permissions problem going on.

do you have the same wireless cards? i have it all working perfectly in windows 7. but in linux, the authentication window keeps popping up.

i just bought this laptop, and i don't know if i have to return it. i'm looking for anyone who solved this already, or having the same problem. if this is isolated only to my case, guess, i have reasons to return it.

@netxph I've had that 1000 adapter, and I used it with Debian. I don't have the same machine, but if you can tell me which distro you are using (debian or ubuntu?) I can try to look for a solution. ;)

I am using debian 6.0.1... i'll try to isolate if it's my router that's causing my wifi problem.

    Thanks a lot :)

Is the authentication dialog that comes up repeatedly the one for your network key, or your keyring/root password? Also what kind of encryption are you using on your access point/router?

If you open a terminal window and run tail -f /var/log/syslog while trying to associate, you will probably get some info from network manager that may lead you in the right direction.

yes, it's for the network key.

Here's the daemon.log, i'll try to get the syslog later. I have a hunch that if this is only happening on my case, maybe, this has something to do with the router.

    daemon.log's tail - using firmware-iwlwifi in debian's non-free repository

That's just as good basically, except you won't have output from daemon.log from the iwlagn module. So syslog may have more clues.

    There's a bug report here: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=487687

    Someone there suggests trying:
    Code:
    modprobe -r iwlagn
    modprobe iwlagn disable_hw_scan=1

wait, so asus k42ja, can have different wireless card? i don't know if i can ask asus support here to change my card.

T_T this is really a deal breaker for me, i want to use debian more than windows 7.

If you want a different card, you may be able to change it out by taking off the bottom panel. It shouldn't void your warranty as long as it's just the cover that has to come off. The card is only held in with 2 screws.

You can try a different kernel if the module parameter for iwlagn doesn't work. For example the one from Debian unstable.

    Worst case scenario...

Which wireless network card would be best compatible with linux? Will they fit in my laptop?

    Thanks. :)

I have had the best experience with atheros, but it's a tradeoff because their windows drivers are horrid. I don't run windows so that's not a factor for me, but it could be a major issue if you plan on dual booting.

I'm not sure if you have a half-height or full-height slot, I think the 1000 is a half-height card so let's say that. There are half-height atheros cards, but they don't do 5GHz. There are some forthcoming ones apparently, but I haven't seen them for sale yet.

Really though, you should be ok with a new kernel in the worst case. I think you're hitting an iwlagn driver bug (or it could be a firmware bug, I'm not really sure).

I tried reinstalling Ubuntu 10.10 three times but everytime audio works only the first time after install and stopped working when rebooted.

All the information given above were unchanged when audio was working and when was not working, I am now getting frustrated because of this issue as is nothing has changed in the configuration from when it was working.

The microphone works fine all the time ( I can tell this because that indicator in the input tab of sound preferences fluctuates when i use microphone)

Please help me, I would really appreciate it.

PS. My laptop has only one jack both for audio input and audio output.

    Thanks, waiting for reply

Sorry I omitted the -i in lspci | grep -i audio. No problem though since you posted the full lspci.

Does your sound work from a cold boot, or is it just totally dead after you boot Ubuntu for the first time?

Do you get sound through headphones/line out? In your mixer, do you have a control for Speaker or Front? Are they all the way up?

You can try adding this to the end of the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file (as root):
    Code:
    options snd-hda-intel model=auto position_fix=0
Save that file and then do a sudo alsa force-reload and see if it makes any difference. If not you can delete the line above.

Also look at that file and make sure there isn't another entry for snd-hda-intel.

I'm looking through bug reports and whatnot, if I find something good I'll add it to this post.

    Thanks for replying

Sound only worked when i first start my laptop just after ubuntu 10.10 setup, after a reboot it just stopped working.

No there is no sound in headphones/line out, there is no sound control only ubuntu's Sound preference in which nothing is changed from when the sound was working.

I tried what you asked and its still not working

there is no entry for snd-hda-intel in that file

below is the full content of that file if it helps

    alsa-base.conf - 4dd7b

    Thanks

OK now I'm finding some stuff...

This thread suggests the same config line as I pasted above except without position_fix: [ubuntu] ALC259 RealTek card - No Sound - Alternative? - Ubuntu Forums

This one suggests using the bleeding-edge ubuntu alsa package from a PPA: Ubuntu Forums - View Single Post - Sound problems with 10.4 netbook remix and ASUS 1001pxd (Realtek ALC259)

I am not sure you have to go so far as to purge all of the alsa packages first, though.

If none of that works, I'll start looking deeper, it's hard to debug audio problems over the internet so I'm going for the easiest first. ;)

    The first solution didn't work

I removed alsa from package manager but i cannot install it again as said in the second thread, Package manager is also not showing any entry for alsa to reinstall, now there is no sound device showing in Sound preferences.

I think i should use Fedora, Ubuntu is pure crap, its so frustrating when basic things don't work

When trying to update, its saying no internet connection, now its getting even more frustrating

    Thanks

After you add that PPA you will need to update your sources list (sudo apt-get update). You should probably be doing this stuff from the command line since the GUI package manager may have ripped out something that you needed (that's why I said I'm not sure you need to purge the packages, you can usually just install one from PPA over the existing one). If you look at the log you can tell what it removed and then install those packages from the CD, worst case, if your network won't work.

I've also seen fedora threads with the same issue, I'm not sure that would solve your problem, but I'm not going to find myself in the position of defending Ubuntu. ;)

Can you do a quick review of this laptop?? i am interested in buying this one, its core 13 model is available for Rs 37000 at nehru place. How sturdy is the laptop? What about overall buid quality, its keyboard? Does it have a express card slot?? Can you post some pictures of the laptop?
Im confused between this laptop and acer timeline 4820tg, both are in same price range, which one will be better?
