hello there. i've read the reviews on this site for the G60VX-RBBX05 and the G72GX-RBBX05 and i'm torn on which one to go with. the latter is currently 100 bux more than the former and as you all know offers 2GB more RAM and a slight increase in processing power, and the extra inch of screen real estate. sure the HDD is only 5400RPM but that is not a concern for me at this point. what will make up my mind between the two is knowing if either, or both, is upgradeable. so help me decide dudes!!

Yes. a tad high but crysis will stress the beans out of your comp.

make sure your laptop has proper room underneith it for airflow.

Upgradeable how? Both would let you swap out RAM and the hard drive. You *MIGHT* be able to swap CPUs on either, though personally that's way more involved than I want to get on a laptop.

Yes as stated above RAM,Hard Drive and CPU are pretty much upgradable.
CPU is a pretty easy swap just make sure you have some thermal paste to re-apply.

Yeah my temps stay around 95 when playing Crysis and that's on an undervolted GPU. If you haven't you could give that a shot and see if it helps reduce your temperatures. I guess it's normal though for a game like this.

To those who have bought the G60VX-RBBX05 from Best Buy.
Did your laptop come with a Windows CD? And have you tried to reformat the HD?

CNET claims the G60VX-RBBX05's max memory is 4GB, though some here have mentioned it is in fact upgradeable. Can anyone confirm or clarify this?

my g60vx rbbx05 has recently gone up 6 degrees in idle temp (from 59 to 65), loads temps went from 87 to 92

mindful that the ambient temp in my room has gone up slightly and the "ACMON.exe" process took longer than usual to close during a recent shutdown, should i be worried?

Hi all...great thread about the g60vx-rbbx05...

I do have a question. I am thinking about purchasing the g60vx but I already own a g50vt-x5 I purchased last year. Would the g60vx with the GTX 260m be a significant upgrade from the g50vt with a 9800m gs gpu?

Is the 260m a much better gpu than the 9800m gs?

    Thanks for any info...

    Bob

Looks like you'd be going from 64 cores to 112.

Now personally I think even 32 runs todays games just fine, and wouldn't upgrade just to be upgrading, but it is a 75% boost.

Hi folks, new forum member here -- and new owner of a G60vx.

Just thought I'd post a few notes. I'm about a week into this laptop. I'm not a gamer and not into all the temp tracking and mods like many here. I work mostly with web related stuff, server monitoring, etc. but I need several desktops and apps running simultaneously and everything has to play nice. So I bought this machine on the specs I saw, and the Asus name, and hoped for the best. Glad to have found this forum and some good reviews and info in this thread.

Anyway, I needed a dual boot machine. I installed Ubuntu 9.10 (32 bit) on the stock drive. Linux ran fine with some configuration but Windows 7 failed to boot every time I had touched the partition. It wanted to run checkdisk on startup, and couldn't (most of the time). I probably did 6 reinstalls trying different things. Finally decided to drop a second Seagate 320 7200rpm drive in the bay for Ubuntu and leave the Windows partition alone. That took care of the Windows booting problem.

Somewhere in the process I turned off the radio switch on the front, which I didn't even notice was there. Why is there no manual showing basic things like buttons, switches, etc. I mean, most are obvious but I've been messing with this laptop for a week and just now found out (from this thread) that there are touch sensitive buttons below the screen. But I regress... I had turned the radio switch off. Tried toggling the radio with Fn F2 in Windows and Ubuntu and figured the radio had died. I accidentally found the radio switch, turned it on and figured my problems were solved. But after several reboots (with only Windows on the drive at this point) the radio was still showing as OFF in the Intel utility. Called Asus support at about 9:00pm and they answered the phone! The guy showed me a trick I wanted to post here. He had me do a Fn F2 to get the antenna tower on the (Windows) screen. Then mouse over the antenna icon and left click. The radio came on. Not too smooth but that did work.

I do think I'm going to love this laptop.

I can post more things I've learned (mostly Ubuntu related on this box) but must break now for dinner.

One quick question; does the speaker system absolutely suck or is something wrong with my setup? Not only relatively low volume but no bass at all. Sounds worse than a transistor radio. I can't believe Altec Lansing would have their name on this audio and am hoping something is just wrong and I've missed it.

    Thanks all!

have you tried using pressing f8 quickly after selecting windows 7 boot (not vista) at grub menu? when it comes up pick first option to do a recovery and do a system repair and give it some time...its a rootkit problem but after the scan fixes it boots fine into windows 7..i had same problem and i too have 9.10 ubuntu installed on same partition and my problem was solved..

btw does anyone here know how to get network shares to show in windows xp? my shares are on an xp desktop and i wanna access them from ubuntu laptop..samba has no problems finding the network but when i open the network it takes a min to try searching for shared folders and then it fails to locate?

Yes the speakers aren't that great. No bass either. Though I wouldn't say the speakers are really any different to other laptop speakers. Not usually that good.

Regarding low sound maybe try this.

ITS A LAPTOP. ITS NOT SUPPOSED TO HAVE GOOD SOUND.

if you want good sound, buy a desktop with 7.1 surround sound.

    Hi,
I've been eyeing this laptop for some time now, but no place in Canada carries it. Does anyone know of a canadian supplier who sells this?
I'm tempted to just go to the states to buy it, but don't want to get hit with the taxes. Has anyone from Canada purchased this from BB USA and can let me know how much tax/duties you paid? Thanks for the answers.

Exactly... its a laptop, with open air speakers... of course there will be no bass.

To turn up the system volume tho, go into the bios, or adjust it in your Device manager. thats how i did it

    Hi everyone

I'm thinking of buying either Asus G60VX-RBBX05 or Acer® Aspire AS5738DG 3D. I'm new on this forum and I hope that somebody could help me out.

Regarding Asus G60VX-RBBX05 I have two questions:

    1. Does it support 1080p content via HDMI? I would like to watch 1080p movies on my HDTV.
    2. Does it have S/PDIF support ?

Thank you in advance for your help

Yes and yes. You will need to use S/PDIF if you want anything better than stereo sound I believe since I think that's all the HDMI alone can output.

Thanks Adam. No, I didn't try that. Good to know and will hopefully help someone who stops by here. I'm very happy having the second drive in place and running that way for now. I spend 95% of my time in Linux but Windows 7 is working ok when I need it with this dual-drive setup. I haven't worked on the shares though, since I haven't had the need. I should devote some time to that so it's not a thrash when it comes up.

I can hear you, Ghost. No need to yell. It's not that my hearing is bad.

Frankly, I don't care about surround sound and a desktop is just too awkward for me to carry around a couple times a day. I didn't buy the G60 for its sound, obviously. I was wondering if others were experiencing the same thing.

Yeah, I'm a bit of an audiophile and have been for 30 years, but I think my expectations here are realistic. I have an old Toshiba Qosmio F15 that had nice full sound -- for a laptop. So whether or not it's "supposed" to have good sound, it could have had much better sound, imho. I simply have no idea why Altec Lansing would have put their name on this. That's about it.

Just curious, If I were to wipe the hard drive and put on another version of W7 such as Ultimate or whatever and later decide to go back... Would the restoration disks I was prompted to create or the cds that came with the 05 put the ASUS recovery partition back on?
    Thanks :)

    Hi,

I know I'm seeming posting this everywhere but I kind of need to know - how big is the G60 really? I was hoping to get the Asus g51vx-x3a but comments on newegg says it as big/bulky as a 17" and that's really putting me off. Is that true for the G60 as well?

    Cheers,
    Patrick

I had an HP Pavillion ZD7000 Series that was a 17 inch wide screen... that thing was bulky. The G60 is about 2 lbs lighter than that old beast and I can tell when I pick it up. It doesn't seem like much of a difference but I can still tell. I would recommend going to Bestbuy. At the one here they had it just on display with the rest of the laptops and I was able to pick it up and stuff. In short, it is not as bulky as a 17 incher but still, not exactly light... After all, it is a gaming laptop. I hope this helps. :)

I have some problem with Bioshock. I can't play Bioshock on my asus G60VX.
I did everything try to fix the bioshock.exe stop working error. I get the small BioShock splash icon dead center on the screen, then the "bioshock.exe has stopped working" error. No info otherwise. Nothing changes, nothing helps. I bought this computer because I want to play this game
    Someone help me please

I dont know what you have already tried but here is what I would do. Keep in mind I'm no genius :)

    1. Uninstall the game through the control panel.
    2. Run CCleaner or a type of program that would clear the registry of all remnants of the game then restart your computer.
    3. Reinstall Bioshock
    4. Before launching it, right click on the .exe file and go to properties. Go to compatibility mode and choose XP or Vista.
... Then try the game again... Hopefully that would work. If not, try searching for any updates to the game or even try another driver for your video card.

Hmm, I guess worst case scenario you could always run the cds that came with the G60 to reinstall the OS. If restoring back to manufacturing defaults doesnt work I'm out of ideas...

the G60 almost exactly fits my Thermaltake Massive 23 laptop cooler.

the 17" gateway FX as seen here: http://www.hitechlegion.com/reviews/cooling/notebook-cooling/1171-thermaltake-massive-23-st-laptop-cooler?start=2 is much bigger and overhangs the cooler. i think the Asus' 17" G7X maybe bulkier than the gateway FX. then again the G60 isnt a slim one either. i think you'll find most gaming laptops are bulky.

    @Bioshock

i believe some had some success with the game on win7 by running the installer itself on "compatibility" mode.

Making it higher in bios appears to only affect the initial Asus screen noise when the system starts up. My G60vx only has sound come out its speakers during that time when it starts up. It seems to be stuck thinking there is a headset plugged in. Headsets and external speakers sound great but when they are unplugged I get no sound. I found several others with the same problem on the Asus support forums. I reinstalled the drivers and it still has the same problem. I think it is the spring in the headphone jack that is stuck in a position thinking the set is still plugged in. I called Asus and they are having me install an updated driver from their site.... hopefully that works but I doubt it... If not I will call them back and see what options they have. Has anyone on this forum experienced this issue?

There is a setting under the sound devices tab that i used that improved my volume significantly. I will see if i can find it and post back.

    EDIT-
OK, right click on your volume tab, go to playback devices. Right click on speakers, click on properties, enhancements, then check the Loudness equalization. Made a huge improvement for me.

i used setfsb to oc the cpu. it seemed stable, 2 orthos's ran fine for 8 minutes at 72C. cpu-z reported the clock increase correctly. WEI went up in cpu calculations. then after about half an hour out of nowhere it went to blue screen. so i lowered it a bit and it did it again. are the clocks unstable or is it something else?

nvm fixed it clocks were still too high
