You've tried rebooting after you set it with rwe?

If you can't set it back the only thing I can think of is to reflash your BIOS (not with winflash, instead with a fresh FAT formatted USB stick and EZ flash in the BIOS).

At least that makes sense... make sure to post anything interesting you find if you keep tweaking the EC. :)

I was having problems also with my computer not sleeping, going dead on me, power problems in general.

I found a really good article that tells you what your settings should be for each power setting, as some settings can contradict and cause problems.

Power Plan Settings - Change - Windows 7 Forums
    http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/778-power-plan-settings-change.html

You can also run a detailed Power Efficiency Diagnostics Report that Microsoft put deep in the bowels of Windows 7:

Guided Help: Get a detailed Power Efficiency Diagnostics Report for your computer in Windows 7
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976034

The report in the article above lets you see what kinds of power issues your computer has. You'll find stuff there that will surprise you.

The best solution that I found is to just not use sleep, and only use hibernation. All of my power problems went away.

    Hope this helps.

I own this laptop for almost a year. But i have some questions.

    1. This has never bother me but since I have some major problems (i think) I'm wondering how to see your real laptop type? It is written G51J series on the sticker near the trackpad. but when I look at the type model in the dxdiag it is written G60JX. the spec of my laptop is : i7 Q720QM, GTS360M, 4 GB ram, 500HDD.

    2. This is when the real trouble comes. Recently the laptop's fan buzzing like crazy. the temp is really high. right now writing this questions the temp goes up to 68ish for the CPU. and the GPU 68C. (note this is just browsing the net). And I was playing NBA2k11 just now. for some unknown reason the laptop keeps shutting off. is it because the GPU turns to hot?? Overheating problems? should I bring this machine to ASUS office???

If your laptop is shutting off and the fan is noisy, check your vent area and see if it's clogged with dust. You can easily take off the bottom cover and clean out the fan and vent with some compressed air. See the G50 disassembly guide linked in the sticky: http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu...blems-useful-threads-read-before-posting.html

Also, the motherboard model is the same between the G51 and G60. They share a lot of parts. The BIOS is labeled as G60 and so is the motherboard.

Hello I own this laptop G51J about 2 months, which use nVidia GTX 260 (DX10). Can I upgrade it? Maybe with GTX 460 or 480

Wow so I was fooling around today and I decided to try Furmark + Prime95 together.

I do have the known throttling issue which sucks but it's not like I can disable it: My temps are insane.

Within 1 minute Furmark spikes the GPU to 98C and climbing. I closed it at that point to prevent meltdown. Seriously, in one minute!

5 minutes of Prime95 (no Furmark) and my CPU is at 93C. I cleaned out the fans recently so I know that's not the problem.

Are these temps normal? I knew this got hot, but wow. It did NOT get this hot when it was new, not even close!

    hey guys,

I know this is an old thread and all, but i recently returned to gaming after 6 months or so and I was disappointed to find that everything seemed a lot slower than i remembered.

    so I ran 3dmark06 and I got a disappointing 8266.

    Result

I have yet to clean out dust since I bought it in dec 09...maybe that's the problem?

any ideas? this has me quite distraught.

Note: I got 1(!) fps for the 2 CPU tests...is this common?

    No.

GPU Yes. CPU no, my CPU has never been higher than 85C in prime95 alone even with >15% overclock. Maybe your thermal goop is drying out (stock Asus goop? should have replaced it already. AS5 as well needs redoing. ICD7 - what I got in mine from xoticpc - have heard is ok for longer)

This is why I improved airflow for the fan recently. Temps are now lower than when new. Link in my sig iirc.

1-2 fps on the CPU tests is normal, as are your 3dm06 CPU scores at ~3200. Despite the "CPU Speed" being under the 1600MHz it should display as (maybe 3dmark just misread). This just shows why specialised graphics chips (GPUs) have grown to be ubiquitous for 3D over the last 15 years and how poor CPUs are at 3D graphics by comparison. Your GPU is hundreds of times faster because it's 112 cores specialised for 3D maths whereas your CPU is a 4-core jack-of-all-trades.

Your GPU scores are not though, stock speeds should get you almost exactly 10,000 3dm06, your GPU scores for the SM2 and SM3 tests are below 3,500 possibly pointing to driver dodginess keeping your GPU clocks in a low power mode but most likely indicating baaaaaad heat throttling (to check - find a tiny util called "Toggle 0x1FC" which disables the throttling - if your lappy is throttling, with this active, your scores should shoot up.)

BUT I would NOT do this until it's cleaned out, if dust is really bad you may see smoke and flames. When you clean it out make sure you blow out the dust in the copper grilles of both bits of the heatsink, you may need a can of compressed air.

Hello, does anyone have this same message displayed during boot-up? You have to disable Quiet Boot to see it:

Version 1.27.1118 Copyright (C) 2008 AMerican Megatrends Inc.
    EVALUATION COPY
Press (F2) to enter setup. Press (ESC) for BBS POPUP Menu

Why is the BIOS saying it is an EVALUATION COPY?
I have the latest BIOS update and it said it before the update as well.

    Thanks!

Yes that is normal. I also noticed this when I had a G51J.

The G51J was the first ASUS G-series notebook to have an AMI Aptio UEFI BIOS, so that may be the reason for the 'evaluation' version. This would relate to ASUS' license from AMI.

Again, completely normal and nothing to worry about.

Hey all, I still use this machine as my primary work laptop. I ran geekbench yesterday just for kicks and saw that my RAM is only running at 534MHz. Is there a setting somewhere that I need to change in order for it to run at the rated 1066MHz?
    Thanks.

Geekbench, CPU-Z, and the like will show the actual speed, but the effective speed is double, hence DDR. 533*2 is your 1066 :)

    Hope for help please.
my G51j would always freeze when external speakers were plugged into the Audio Jack. never bothered to get it fixed because plugging the speakers into my dell monitor produced sound through them. Got a new viewsonic monitor and no sound was running through it with everything connected the same way, so I tried connecting to the Asus audio Jack and quickly remembered why I had been running it through the dell - no sound output.not with the. Realtek Jack or the headphone Jack.
now what makes everything suck is the same thing as before - immediately after booting into windows and the icons refresh or whatever happens, everything freezes mouse stops responding and a hard reset holding the power button down is required to shut it off. This happens every time

Any suggestions or insight? Your help is greatly appreciated.

hendge, make sure you have uninstalled the creative software. That was a known cause of hard lockups.

If that doesn't fix it, first run a disk check: Check your hard disk for errors

Then check your memory either with memtest86+ Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool or with the less extensive built-in tool: Diagnosing memory problems on your computer

As for the lack of audio output via headphones, make sure your realtek control panel has the correct settings and that your default audio out isn't on the HDMI out but the analog out. If that doesn't fix it, you may have a stuck headphone jack.

I wonder if it's creative or Nvidia? Device manager only has Nvidia, Reatlek and something called SRS that came with this new monitor...speaking of Monitors, was it just a characteristic of the previous Dell that allowed the audio to pass thru? This new Viewsonic was not allowing that so i installed the SRS software that interfaces with sound card - it was showing up as an additional playback device forcing me to adjust default device with every boot. Disabaling that has solved the "no sound" issue, probably should just uninstall altogether?

I see creative in programs but it's not being used - turns out i think teh freezing was plugging the audio cable into the line out and not the headphone jack , also changed a setting that separated sound from each jack/played each output separately.

I just read about some common failures with those ports and wanted see if my problems were related.
    Thank you!
