I guess I am the only one that complains about sound. one person pm'd me told me to turn it to 10 in the bios, might as well told me to turn it to 11 lol

AFAIK the sound control in the BIOS only affects the startup sound you hear when you turn on the PC and the Asus logo is displayed.

Odd isn't it? Crysis runs fine for both of us without a BSOD while a list of other games give BSOD. So this only suggests that the problem is not cause of hardware strain since Crysis is as demanding as it gets, but maybe an issue with perhaps the turbo boost feature of the new Core i7 being incompatible with some games. Signs point towards the CPU and not the GPU since the G51vx also has the same GPU and doesn't suffer from the same issue.

Getting BSOD? I only had one bsod with L4D crash course map, and only once. I haven't had bsod with any other game I have played, including all those in my review plus more.

For the people that complain much about the screen, I found that "digital vibrance" helps a lot with the contrast of the lap. it is on Nvidia control panel in the adjust color settings, set it to 26% or so for best results.

I suggest you enter the Creative audio center, first go to graphic equalizer and pump up 12dB up, then go to EAX effect, enable them and use Recital Hall with -10dB.

I use that config and I really like how it sounds, plust you get a decent boost in sound compared to stock settings.

yeah, I noticed they are talking about borderlands gives bsod I plan on buying that soon, my first thought is the game itself causing it. I also plan on getting modern warfare 2

    whats the difference between the Built-in 802.11 Wireless A/B/G/N and the Built-in Intel® PRO/Wireless 5300 802.11 a/g/n ?

is it worth the $33 extra?

I'm no expert but I would think the Intel wireless card would just give greater range and a stronger/faster signal than the standard stock card.

Two more days... two more days. I can't wait to fire up Crysis and see how bad the G51-A1 smokes my old XPS M1710 with a 7900 GTS. This was a great laptop... three years ago. Mmm.... Asus.

    Intel 5300 vs 5100.

The difference is 57MB vs 37MB per second.

    http://www.intel.com/network/connectivity/products/wireless/adapters/5000/index.htm

I'll let you know when I max out the 37MB/second bandwidth on Comcast or Verizon FIOS..........

It varies, depending on the manufacturer and laptop type. I have seen gaming laptops get on the 90C range, with low and medium range cards. That to me is unacceptable considering they consume much less power than cards like the GTX260M.

That being said, generally the higher end GPUs get specific cooling to maintain them on the 80C range, but in the case of the Asus, they just kept the previous design and modified it a bit so temps are on the high range.

In the end the laptop was designed that way, and the GPUs take up to 106C before shutting down (to prevent damage). So! As long as you keep your GPU under 102C you should be ok for at least a couple of years heh. :p

I just got mine! Everything is working great so far but I have one question. I opened it up and looks like the void sticker wasn't replaced. Like they just unscrewed the screw by just going through the sticker. This is my first notebook so I don't know. Is this how it should look? It doesn't seem like it should.

while gaming (fallout 3 high setting):
    Using stock driver: 90C
    Using dox 185.85 driver: 83C

    while idling (browsing internet):
    using stock driver 66-68C

That's the temperature recorded on CPUID hardware monitor. I will test other games to see what temperature I get.

Do you have g51j or g50v?

Also, did you apply IC 7 or AS5 on your laptop? I got my g51j with IC 7 on both GPU and CPU.

I get quite a bit crappier performance in Dragon Age with DOX's drivers.

G51J just arrived and I'm on it now!! :D Keyboard is lovely and the mouse is great. Running nice and quiet and the screen is perfectly fine unlike all the bad reviews I've read. How ever I'm no expert so I don't know what I'd be looking for.

I've done nothing but configure time and date lol.

    What should I do?

Shall I install the drivers which came on the disk with it? They say G60J on them

    Thanks!

Playing Dragon Age with stock drivers/thermal, I get the GPU up to 94c and the CPU to 69c.

Not bad, but I left a water bottle a solid foot away from the vent the other day, it was very hot in just 2 hours.

Well my temps on stock are usually what some of you are getting with Dox drivers heh.

I am using 186.82 right now, and since they work well, I won't be changing them soon :D

Where did you buy it from? I am sure that if you got it from a well known reseller you won't have issues. Just contact them to let them know and to clear any misunderstandings regarding the sticker.

If you ordered IC24 or other thermal paste, they usually do that. Warranty still stands but you have to contact your reseller first.

The stock driver is already installed once you setup your system.
You don't need the driver's disk unless you want to install your own window OS.

Ok...stupid question time for you guys.

Is there any way possible that someone can explain to me the best and most dummy proof way of updating my BIOS? I know 204 is out there but when I start up the ASUS live update it tells me there is no need to update the environment. That's what I've always used on my old G2S....so that's all that I know so far.

The thing I fear most is bricking my brand new laptop. So any help here would be much appreciated! :)

    Dummy proof way:
    1. download 204 bio from asus support website
    2. format your usb
    3. put 204 bio in your usb
    4. restart computer and press F2 when republic of gamer logo came up.
    5. use the flash program in the bio to update your bio

I ran another app that measured CPU only performance and I closed it after I got over 84C heh. No other program or real life app has ever given more than 74C....

And yeah, I already ask Asus why the CPU fan kicks until so late. As for the temps, yeah it is about 100 or abit more the top temp, but I remember I read somewhere that the actual CPU processor is a bit less, like 5C or so to prevent real damage on the CPU, and instead just shutdown in case of going too hot.

Try running the intel burn test. It try to simulate real life apps and doesn't run all 4 cores at 100% at the same time.

just curious, are there any other places other than xoticpc & gentech selling a customisable version of this laptop.
wanted a ssd option as primary hdd and more ram (6-8gb)
The upgrades (ram, hard drives etc)on these sites seem a little steeply priced.

Will it be cheaper to buy RAM seperately and manually install?
any decently balanced(price/performance) ram options ? kingston corsair etc, 1333 or 1066?

How about the SSDs? Can i buy one separately and install it by myself &will it be cheaper this way?
xoticpc is selling the intelx26 80gb for $230 & 160gb for $480. How are these prices in comparison to the market
Heard the ocz ssds are much cheaper compared to intelx25s with similar performance. true?
If i am to do this then do you guys know what specs of the SSDs should i be looking at. ie what specific models will work with the g51j

    thanks guys
    regards

Asus G51j is an already built prepackage, so upgrading it its expensive imo and not worth it. The upgrades will take very fast to range of a Sager 8690, imo the Asus is a decent package if you dont do upgrades, else sager seems like a better candidate.

Unless you doing video editing, i dont think you need more than 4gb atm, you always upgrade it later on, when the 4 gig modules are cheaper and better timings.

Regarding the SSD, the street prices are about the same, so you upgrade later on aswell. OCZ vertex are also another good option for SSD comes in different sizes than intel.

lol you hit the nail on the head. Video editing is exactly the reason im looking to upgrade my laptop (that and mid-end gaming)
ive also been looking at the dell studio 17, I asked a similar question in that forum, See here

so the sager huh? thanks will check up on that as well (man this is confusing)
been checking up on ram prices saw this site - crucial.com
might be better deals out there (any links?) but a cursory glance revealed ram prices to be at par with xoticpc. seems the 4gb modules are what really jack the prices up
guess ill stick with 4gb for now
    thanks anyway

Hi all. Two nights ago I dumped my order for the Dell Studio XPS 1645 after exactly one months wait, multiple auto-cancellations and auto re-orders - resulting in no movement on its "production" status at all.

So, I just ordered the last in-stock G51J from Canada Computers. Hopefully will actually have it within a week or two at most. But I have a few questions I'm hoping one of you might kindly answer.

    1) Does the Asus come with a standard Windows 7 DVD? If so, is it an OEM, Upgrade or Retail version? I prefer to start clean with new machines by reinstalling the factory OS and most up to date drivers, sourced from the component manufacturer. If the G51J doesn't come with a clean Win7 DVD, have any of you requested one from Asus and had it sent to you? Alternately have any of you installed from retail Win7 DVD's that you already have but used the Key provided with your G51j?

    2) Does the G51J have a recovery partition or any other partitions? If so, do you know what is on them exactly?

    3) Can someone please click their Start Menu and search for dxdiag, then run it. If you could click "Save All Information" when it comes up, then copy the hardware results (from the top to the "DirectShow Filters" section) and paste it in a reply. I'd very much like to see a complete hardware list so I can track down component parts and drivers from the source.

    4) If anyone has installed WinXP (either dual-boot or as a replacement for Win7 due to the BSOD/BIOS issue), could you list the drivers you needed for specific hardware to get everything up and running?

I very much look forward to owning the G51J and participating here with the rest of you. Thanks for any help you can provide with the above.

Is there any way to change the lid of the laptop, like a removable faceplate or something? That design is ugly as sin and is one of the main things keeping me from getting this laptop. It basically screams "Look at me, I have a laptop and it's so awesome because it has electricity on it". Seriously.
